About the Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier, also known as the Waterside Terrier, was bred to originally hunt small game in England though it was later bred in Africa to hunt large game.

Today this terrier is used as a companion and guard dog.

The Airedale is a natural watch dog who has a temperamental side that should be trained as early as possible so that the owner has more control of the dog. They tend to fight for the right in the home for the master position and need to be taught who the boss from the very beginning is. They are highly intelligent dogs who learn quickly and like to please. Though are relatively tolerant of children, they need to be socialized very early so that they don’t play accidentally hurt the children. They are good with other pets although they usually will take over the dominant position amongst the animal ranks. Playful, active and loyal this dog is a great pet who will love the right owner forever.

Airedale Terrier’s have a long flat skull and head. Their small v-shaped ears seem to point to their small, dark eyes. Their tail is about thigh length and hangs straight against their powerful legs. Their paws a small and round with slightly arched toes. The short coat of this breed is wiry, straight in most parts, and dense all over the dog’s body. The coat comes in one general appearance though slight variations may occur. Usually the coat is tan on the head, ears, legs and underside of the tail while the sides, upper body and top of the tail is black or dark grizzle.

Though this breed is generally healthy, they may suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, eye problems and skin infections.

Airedales are very active dogs both inside and out and are not well suited for apartment life. They need a well sized yard that allows them to get regular exercise. They can get bored without attention while outside so long walks are also a must. Ideally this dog would make an active, expert handler a perfect partner.
