About the Bloodhound Dog

The Bloodhound, also called the St. Hubert Hound, was found in Belgium in the Middle Ages. Thanks to the breeding done by monks at St. Hubert's monastery, the breed grew and flourished. This dog's exceptional nose made it one of the most known breeds for scent tracking.

Today, Bloodhounds are still used as tracking dogs but they are also companion dogs.

The Bloodhound Temperment and Intelligence

Affectionate, kind and shy are words that best describe Bloodhounds. They are patient, loving and noble dogs that make terrific companions. They are excellent with children and love to be petted and loved on by them. When puppies, these dogs are full of energy and are very independent thinkers who follow their own commands. Owners need to be very patient with them and train them early on in a firm but gentle manner. Until they reach about 2 years old, they will test their owners to see what they can get away with. They love people and greet everyone with enthusiasm though they can be protective of their home. These dogs should not be trusted off leach because their strong scent tracking ability will have them wander off until they come to the end of the smell.

Bloodhound Characteristics

Bloodhounds have a very distinct look that makes them distinguishable no matter where they go. Loose skin is all around on this dog which gives them their unique look. It is curled and folded everywhere, predominately on the forehead and sides of the face though. Their skull is long and narrow with very deep set, diamond shaped eye. The corners of the eye hang down and the eyeball color varies depending on the color of the dog. Their ears are very long and thin and are set very low on the skull. The ear partially curls in and out in very graceful folds. They have large, open nostrils, square lips, loose skin all around the neck and chin. Their shoulders are wide set and powerful which allow them to walk for very long distances without tiring. Their feet are large and round and sit under strong, straight legs. The color of the dog varies but the most common colors are black & tan, liver & tan, and red. White can sometimes be found on the chest and feet.

Bloodhound Health Concerns

As a general rule, Bloodhounds are prone to bloat, stomach cramps, dysplasia, ear infections and entropion.

Choosing a Bloodhound

These dogs do bark, howl, and drool inside the home so they are not for everyone. They love to run and need a lot of exercise. They can walk for very long periods of time so they make excellent hiking partners.
