Standard Borzoi Characteristics
About the Borzoi
The Borzoi, also known as the Russian Wolfhound, was a wolf hunting dog owned by the Russian aristocracy in the Middle Ages. Created to protect their owners from wolves, these dogs would work in pairs, could out run wolves and would take down their prey and hold it on the ground until the hunter could reach it.
Today these dogs are used mainly for companionship.
The Borzoi Temperment and Intelligence
Borzoi's are very sweet natured and smart dogs. They are very loyal and affectionate to their families. Because of their hound nature, they are not nature people pleasers though they are quick learners. Extremely fast, these sighthounds can't be trusted off leash. They do very well with other dogs but are untrustworthy with other pets such as rabbits and cats. Though they are good with children, they are ideal pets for families with young children because they don't like to be played with roughly and don't like to be disturbed.
Borzoi Characteristics
The Borzoi has a long, narrow, slightly round skull with a very long, powerful jaw. Their ears are small and lie on the neck when relaxed and rise when at attention. Their eyes very dark and somewhat oval shaped. They have a very strong, curved neck, sloping shoulders, a narrow chest, and raised back. They have rabbit shaped feet with arched toes and well padded pads. Their tail is long, low set and curved. Their fur is long, sleek and flat. It is shorter on the head, ears, and legs while it is long on the neck, hindquarters, tail, and back of the forelegs. Any color or color combination is acceptable.
Borzoi Health Concerns
This breed is prone to bloat, is sensitive to medicines and is a very picky eater.
Choosing a Borzoi
Borzoi's are best suited to live with adults only who live in a house with a great big, enclosed yard. They need lots of room to run and play but can do okay in an apartment if they are exercised a lot.
