Standard Kuvasz Characteristics
About the Kuvasz
The Kuvasz, also known as the Hungarian Kuvasz, was originally a Hungarian guard dog.
The modern day Kuvasz is still considered a great guard dog but is also used widely as a companion dog.
The Kuvasz Temperment and Intelligence
The Kuvasz is very protective and will not hesitate to guard its home. In general, this is a one family kind of dog. It is courageous and intelligent and never fully lets down its instinctive guard dog ability. This dog is very hard working and may work for hours without tiring. They are trained easily and are very sensitive to praise and punishment. This dog loves to be with his family and if left alone for long durations, it may become mean or destructive.
Kuvasz Characteristics
The Kuvasz has almond shaped brown eyes and v-shaped ears that rise when they are alert. The nose is not pointed, yet it is straight. The dog has black nostrils and lips. They carry their tail low with a slight curl but when they are excited it raises. Known for their "cat-like" paws, the feet are tiny and round with hair between the toes. They, like other breeds, have a double coat. The top coat is rough can either be straight or wavy and the undercoat is thin and smooth. Though the dog is white, it is pigmented with grey or black.
Kuvasz Health Concerns
The Kuvasz is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, skin problems, allergies, and other joint problems.
Choosing a Kuvasz
This breed is not meant to be in an apartment and requires intense daily exercise and prefers a large yard. They also may drool and slobber so those interested in cleanliness may not want this breed.
