: Flea carpet powders... help please!!!!
: lshelley21 September 05, 2006, 08:23:17 AM
I have fish, ferrets, geckos, and a puppy, the puppy got fleas this weekend which she has k-9 advantix on...although now i must use a carpet  powder to clean the rugs. Does anyone have any suggestions/websites where i can find information on what flea powder is non-toxic to all animals??? The ferrets must come out of cage for 1 hour a day...which can be put on hold until this is taken care of, but i don't want the powder to be toxic to them... any suggestions?

Try a product by Natural Chemistry called De FLEA.  Here is the link http://www.naturalchemistry.com/pet/StorePlus/Store/viewConsumerItems.asp?idProduct=78

It is all natural and contains no chemicals and can be used on/around newborn animals and nursing bitches.

Diatomaceous Earth!!!!

It is made from the bodies of crushed up diatoms (small, single-celled organisms). The bodies are made of silica, which is the same thing as glass, basically. When you look at the diatomaceous earth under a microscope, it looks like crushed shards of glass.

The way it works is like this. You sprinkle it all over your house. Carpets, couches, etc. You can even put it directly on pets. The fleas walk through it. The diatomaceous earth shreds their chitin (hard outer shell) and they dehydrate and die. You have to leave it on for a few days. Your house will be a dust ball for a few days, but it is worth it. Its 100% natural, non-toxic and effective.

I bought mine here.

You can also use Borax - 20 Mule Team in the grocery stores.  Both de and borax you leave down for a day (24 hrs) if at all possible.  Vacuum like crazy first then dust EVERYTHING with it.  Borax "dries" them up and D.E. does a slice and dice number.  Both take a while to work and you won't see any results for a few days.  However, they are both safe.  Wear a mask though since you're using it in the house.  You don't want to breath a bunch of the dust of either one.

oh meant to add that to check for fleas in your house try putting on white socks on your hands and feet and crawl around your floors.  If you have an infestation flea dirt and fleas will pick up on the white socks. ;)

I gave Jaz a bath with de flea,. I didn't find any more fleas on her...just a lot of red marks and since she is white her bites really stand out. The reason why i bathed her was because she had blood on her, although i think she did that to herself itching/pintching herself. Well i didnt find any fleas on her, i was also told to use dawn dish soap on her to kill/suffocate all the fleas, so i did that too. I let her sit with it for 5-10 minutes... she was so good. Then washed that off and put on conditioner to help the oils back in her fur/skin. After the bath i dried her off...and she decided to have a HUGE case of the Zoomies around the house.  Whiel she was getting  bathered i sprayed the rugs with the de flea for house and pet. Seemed to work well, we vaccumed and so far so good. We will just have to wait two weeks to see if anything happens. Thank you So much for you help, i printed out the information recieved in case this happens again. Also why didn't the k-9 advantix work??? I would have thought that it would, but she wouldn't have had 25 fleas on her... or would she?

I have nothing to back this up but...I swear fleas are getting immune to the chemicals we use.  I've taken to bathing exclusively with lemon Joy and using Borax.  They can't get immune to those.  I used Frontline and it doesn't seem to touch them.  And it seems that they have them WORSE when I use it.  Go figure.

Yeah i thought that they were...which is why i think D.E. would work since it shredds them. I guess you can also put that on the dogs coat too..I do know that when you get the flea stuff from a petstore, the potency is greatly reduced to prevent side effects, so getting from the vet is the real deal. Although the easiest solution would be to have my sister actually take care of the cats fleas...then we wouldn't have this problem!!!!!

You can also feed d.e. as it will also kill internal parasites.  It doesn't do anything for heartworms though...Just intestinal parasites.  You can eat it too.  I know people that swear by the stuff.

What does it do for people?

I think fleas do become immune to pesticides.  Same with roaches, ants and other bugs.  Even though you may have used a pesticide (advantage and the other products) a few eggs or fleas may still live thru the treatment, making them stronger and over a period of time you have an immunity.  WIth the product De Flea, it is not a chemical, it works on dissolving the waxy coating of fleas.  This is something they cannot become immune to.

I am so excited on that factor... but what does D.E. Do for human? I know it kills internal parasites on dogs...for humans too?

I suppose that it would work the same way on humans. Why? Do you have an internal parasite?  ;)

lol... um no.... ::)   lol... no just wondering what it does for people...like why do poeple swear by it?
: Re: Flea carpet powders... help please!!!!

Well, I think that people swear by it for their pets and flea problems. I guess I can't speak for everyone, but the reason I love it so much is that it works without chemicals in a purely mechanical way.

Somewhere on this post it says people love eating it..and that they swear by it.... i think i would use for fleas.... hey...can you use it on the dogs coat? Rubbing it in will prevent the fleas right? So if i rub DE on before going to my sisters house, then the fleas will be gone????????????????       ;D :D

I don't think it provides very much in the way of calcium.  You would have to eat about a cup a day for any real mineral benefit...And I don't know that it would be "usable" for our systems.  However, people get parasites too.  We just don't realize it and are rarely treated for them.  You can get white clay though...That's supposed to provide a TON of minerals and stuff that's good for you.  If you are ever stuck in a very small town in AL you will see bags of it for sale.  I can't find it here though...Too resort-y I guess.  There's a dr out in CA that sells the stuff.  He says to eat about a cup a day and that it's an aquired taste.  He swears that's what keeps him healthy.  Whatever floats his boat...
