: NEW PUPPY QUESTIONS
: brindlepup July 19, 2007, 11:42:53 AM
**I also posted this in the general discussion board before I found this one! Sorry if you're reading this twice!**

I am getting an 8 week old brindle male puppy at the end of aug. I am wondering what the average cost or what people have paid to have the ears cropped and the stomach stapled to prevent bloat. I appreciate your help! This is my first dane, so I don't know what is the "right" price for these procedures!

Congratulation s on your new pup - always so exciting.

In case you can be talked out of cropping your pup, here is the official statement of the American Animal Hospital Association (http://www.aahanet.org/Index.htm) on the practice:

"Ear cropping and/or tail docking in pets for cosmetic reasons are not medically indicated nor of benefit to the patient. These procedures cause pain and distress, and, as with all surgical procedures, are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthetic complications, hemorrhage, and infection. Therefore, the American Animal Hospital Association opposes both the cropping of ears and the docking of tails when done solely for cosmetic reasons. Veterinarians should counsel and educate pet owners that these procedures should not be performed unless medically necessary. The American Animal Hospital Association also encourages the elimination of ear cropping and tail docking from breed standards."

I can also share that there is a movement within the american vet association ranks to place a greater emphasis on educating the public about the pain and distress this causes and to decrease, if not eliminate, the practice.

I hope it works....

Welcome & congratulation s on your new baby.  I love puppers with their soft ears and long tails, but that's me.  I'm mom to 3 busy kids, our kitties and Daisy our Golden/Lab, Cassie our Pyr/?, and Sammy our Pyr.  You'll find lots of nice people, wonerful dogs and their stories, and plenty of great dog info here, too.  I hope that you post pics of your little guy when he arrives.  Welcome!

Welcome to the board. I have pyrs so I have no idea about ear cropping. Will you be showing the pup? I've seen lately in the show many Danes with natural ears and they are still put up bu the judges. I would really think about haveing it done. Anyway hope to see some pics soon.
