: Let me do what you were too chicken**** to do...cowards.
: Care2Adopt April 17, 2008, 06:57:10 PM
Today at the shelter I pull all my dogs from, a woman turned in her 12 year old black lab...and her 16 year old dalmation. No reason was given, although she mentioned the dogs severe arthritis, incotinence, mobility problems, etc. When I was there, the dalmation could hardly stand, instead stood hunched over with his eyes drooped and head cocked as though he had had a stroke. He never moved from that position, but you could see this dull pain and confusion in his eyes. 16 years old!!!!!!!

I could not pull them today for beauricratic reasons. (Another rant, trust me). Monday I will be going and removing both dogs from their concrete cells after spending all of their lives together in one home, now seperated by two cells. I'll carefully help them to the car, probably having to carry the poor dalmation. I will take them to the nearest drive through and try to coax them to eat one big juicy hamburger each... and then I will take them to my vet to have them humanely euthenized, and try to tell them how very sorry for them that they have to die in the arms of a stranger and not in the arms of the person they had grown to love and trust would never abandon them... 16 years old, 12 years old. I will soothe them and hold them and try to comfort them the best I could when at the same time I will be raging inside at the injustice of it all.

How can anyone just walk away from their dogs after that ammount of time and not feel any remorse? I mean, I can't imagine walking away from my dogs ever, period, but after 16 years?? How can you just abandon them at a kill shelter and when they tell you they will be taken to the gas chamber... walk away without looking back? After 16 and 12 years of loyalty and love (And she had kids with her, these were inside dogs, great with her kids and raised with her oldest) how can any human being possibly say "Yes, please cram my dogs into a small steel box to let them slowly asphixiate with a dozen other screaming and crying animals because I am too much of a coward to humanely euthenize them myself"

My heart aches for them alone in the cells until monday. And if I ever come across their owner, I don't know what I would do.

I don't have any words except that I so agree with you. What a poor example she has set for her children!!

God Bless you for going above and beyond, yet again.

This is the very reason I have not talked to my sister in going on 2 years.

We had a rescue Shiba Inu named Kiesha, she was 9 when I was given her by her owner.  She was originally a breeding dog and was sold as "a best friend" to the rotty this lady bought, she never really wanted her, and when she mentioned to the vets back home that she wanted to get rid of her they gave he my number.  So I had her for a couple of months, when my sister showed up and met her, and asked if she could have her, I said yes.  And all was fine for 2 years, hen sis went through a divorce and left Kiesha with her ex, as the apartment would not allow dogs.  My sis went to her ex's to pick up their daughter and he was not home yet, having gone out of town, and found Kiesha tied to the back step with a bowl of food and water, that was how he let this 11 year old dog for the weekend.  Dear old sis loved the dog enough then to take her and bring her to my parents house the next weekend.  My folks kept her for a couple of years, but they retired and moved into a bus (the big conversion buses that people live in) and Kiesha didnt travel well so she came back to me, which was fine.  Kisha by now is 12, and spent another year or so with me, and dear sis was in a new stable relationship and her and "new man" wanted Kiesha back, to which I said yes.  By now Kiesha was having back issues, there were days that she could do nothing but lay down, the vets said operating was an option, but with less than a 50% chance of changing anything.  They had her for another year roughly when I got a call from my mother telling me that she had put Kiesha to sleep, which I was fine with because her back had been bothering her, only to have dear old sis let it slip that she DROPPED THIS POOR 14 YEAR OLD DOG AT THE SPCA, WTF???  My mother lied to me to protect the sister, preventing me from saving Kiesha???  She dropped her off as a stray so she would have to pay the fee, thus leaving the poor dog to have to sit there for 3 days shaking before she could be euth'ed???  And when the bitch told me the reason she did it was because Kiesha shed???  She shed???

So ya I wish poor old Kiesha had has someone compassionate enough to do what you are going to do for these poor old souls.  This August will mark the 2 year anniversary since my last conversation I will ever have with my dear old sister.  I thank you for doing this in memory of Kiesha.

Words really cannot express what a wonderful thing you are doing for those dogs. You have such a huge heart. I will be saying a prayer for those two dogs on Monday - and for you because I know it won't be easy for you, either, but thank you for looking beyond what is difficult to do the right thing.

Id like to send you some money to help cover the cost to put the two dogs to sleep. Im not working right now but the kindness you will show these dogs is something there is no price for. If you give me your address or if you have a Paypal acct, I can send or pay this weekend.
As sad as this is, we should all be so grateful that there are people around us who are kind, caring and can make a difference. Ive become so hardened by doing rescue and the things that people make excuses for. Maybe we could set up a fund to cover expenses like this so no one would be out the money. I always say, if you cant give a home, share your money.

Thank you all for your kind words, I just feel so terrible for these poor guys- giving so much of themselves (16 years!!!! God I still can't believe it) and then being dumped at a high kill shelter without so much as a 'Good dog'.

Love Me Forever , while I appreciate your offer, it's coming out of my pocket so it's no big deal and I couldn't accept your money- if I were doing it through the rescue finances then that would be a different story, every rescue needs donations :/ we are all broke after cleaning up other peoples messes.

however if you did want to make a donation to the rescue (Carolina Animal Rescue Experts) theres info on how to at www.adoptcarol ina.com . :)

I'll keep you all posted and let you know how it goes on Monday- thanks all

I don't know what else to say that hasn't been already expressed...bu t I wanted to send my heartfelt thanks to you for doing right by these dogs and giving them the chance to pass peacefully in your arms rather than in a gas chamber all alone.  :'( :'( :'(

Absolutely Julie

I have been thinking today about what a bad week and day I am having and then I remembered today was the day... it puts your life into prospective.

Thinking of those poor dogs today - praying that they had a better life than I think they did and that they are at peace now

Words cannot express what horrible people did this to those dogs and yet words cannot express what I want to say to WhiskeyandSake (sorry I'm really bad with real names)
for all that she is doing and will continue to do.

Thank you
Randy

Again, what wonderful things you do!  I'll admit that I am a horrible person and I sometimes fantasize about dropping my incontinent ancient Schipperke mix off at the shelter pretending like I don't know her, but I'd never actually do such a thing.  (And for those of you who don't know about the schipperke breed - there is a reason for that - no one wants them - they are stubborn with several other bad qualities mixed in!).  I love her and I hope that she quietly passes in her sleep in our bed one evening.

I'm crying myself right now.
