The glucosamine joint supplements are herbal supplements that are for both maintaining a healthy joint as well as treating it for arthritis. Why not keep that joint/cartiledge as healty as we can, as long as we can.  Many of the dog foods really do not have sufficient amounts in them, so you have to check your bag and see how much your dog is really getting based on the daily intake of kibble. I wanted my dog to have an additional supplement and after looking at a ton of them decided on Joint Max TS(cheapest was entirelypets.c om). Seemed to be the most bang for my buck and my dog actually ate them. Here are a couple comparison charts you might find helpful with your decision.
