: Slow metabolism or picky eater?
: joyfulmama July 02, 2009, 01:24:32 PM
We've had our big sweetie for about two weeks now. She's a 16 months old Pyrenees, weighed about 88lbs at our vet's office. The foster-mom told us she weighed 92 lbs at her vet's. Could be a difference in scales.BTW, her name is Lily.

I'm not sure if her weight has gone down since we haven't been back to the vet since two weeks ago. I have noticed that she eats very little. The foster mom said she was eating 2 1/2 cups in the morning, 2 1/2 cups in the evening. I believe she was on Purina dog chow before. I have always been a fan of Nutro, so we switched her to that. She is going potty fine-no upset stomach etc. I mix in some yogurt and some supplemental powder into the kibble and she seems to like it all at first. She isn't eating much, though. She seems hungry, she gets her food, and then only eats about a cup before laying down and ignoring it. I have hand fed her and left the food out for a while, but that makes no difference. This means she's only eating about 2 cups a day! That doesn't sound right to me, but she also doesn't appear to be losing weight or having other issues. She gets walked daily for about 30-60 minutes and drinks plenty of water.

Could it be the brand of food? Is she still settling in? Is it just a slow metabolism?

You may have seen from my introduction post that she does have some food aggression with our other dog. I have fed them in different rooms, and it hasn't changed the amount she eats. FWIW to this discussion, we live in a very hot climate but she stays indoors with us most of the time except for walks and potty/playtime.

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

If she is not losing weight don't worry just yet  Pyrs have a slow metabolism and don't eat well in hot weather.  If she starts to lose weight then you should add some more enticement like canned food to encourage her to eat more.
