: Breaking Out!
: LuvmyMal May 20, 2005, 03:56:44 PM
As some of you may know Tonk stays in a dog play pen while we are working. Well today Brandon called and told me that she was waiting on him when he came home from work looking out the window! Fortunately she only tore up on of her toys and only had 2 accidents (one was pee and one vomit) neither of them very bad. Who knows how long she was out roaming the house and did not even touch the garbage can which was pretty much full, I left about 7:10 and he got home around 5:15. Seems that she either climbed on her crate and jumped out of the playpen or somehow delatched the bottom latch, has this happened to anyone else?

Lucky you that she didnt tear up the whole house  ;D I dont really crate my dogs, I know it is real popular now, but when I started having dogs 25 or so years ago, it wasnt. So I have just doing what I have always done, now I am at home with Galahad so we really dont have that problem, and if we have to leave him, depending on how long we are going to be gone, I either let him have the bedroom or put a doggy bed in the laundry room (easier floor to mopp lol..) A playpen seems to be a good idea but I guess she is now gotten the hang of how to get out  ;D Man... I cant believe she didnt go for the trash, it is usually way too tempting for them to leave. To avoid all messes with the trash I have it under the sink, so dogs and kids cant get to it. If you dont want to crate her, maybe you could concider the bathroom or laundry room. She is sooo cute, how old is she??

Sophie broke out of her crate once.  She managed to jump and bang around enough that the top just popped off.  Needless to say I was very suprised when I got home.  She was a perfect angel though.  She didn't get into any and looked like she just slept on the couch all day (which she isn't supposed to do).  She tried to get out again and scratched her nose up pretty good as you can kind of see in the picture.   After that we bought a pen for her that is I think 8 panels that are 42 inches high and it gives her a little more room to move around.  She hasen't broken out of that yet...   :)

Thanks, she is 17 weeks old. I love the play pen because she can move around in it and go to her crate to sleep.

I've heard many stories about huskies "breaking out".  They seem to be akin to Houdini.  I think this can be attributed to their intelligence and/or drive to run in the wild, pulling sleds, etc.  What do you think?  I've known Malamute/husky mixes who dig and/or remove boards and barracades from fences and gates in order to roam the neighborhood.  Time to go skijoring!  ;)

Well, she has not tried her little act again! We have had some problems at night now with her panting, we have a fan at her crate and even let her lay in bed with us last night for a little while, is there anything we can do to cool her down?

There are some great gel pads that you soak for twenty minutes and they stay cool for about 4 - 5 days.  The only problem is that they are pretty small for my Newfs.  Two of them together (there are velcro straps on the ends so you can put them together) just about handle one big boy.  They are available at www.inthecompa nyofdogs.com
There's also bandanas and harness sort of things that they can wear....unless you are a 150 pound Newf!

dogs pant heavily when they are stressed out.   I just wanted to throw that out there just in case that was what was happening  but i'm not expert.

She has been doing better until last night with the panting, but it was also about 82 deg. here yesterday and even though we had the ac on it was about 73 in the house. So today we went and bought a cool bed they have them for large dog also, you fill it with 6 gal of water and it stays cool and is actually comfortable. Just getting her off the couch to lay on it is a hard thing. The only thing she could be stressed about is her friends, the dogs behind us don't socialize with her as much now that she is getting bigger and she has ran the fence with them since we got her! It really makes me mad! She went outside today to play with them and they turned away, it was so sad to see her, she was all ready to come inside, so we took her to PetsMart and then to go eat lunch at Sonic, that is her saturday treat, she goes and sits under the table while we eat and everyone adores her. Will keep you posted on our next child, we may adopt one from a rescue shelter!

Thank you! I want 2 anyway and this way Tonka will always have a playmate! She is mostly a daddy's girl so hopefully the next one will be mommy's girl! Keep you fingers crossed for me.
