32  Newfoundlands / Newfoundland Discussions / Re: How often to you give them a bath? on: November 11, 2008, 05:19:40 AM
At that puppy stage when they are always getting into trouble, I bath whenever they have gotten into something gross. I just add a conditioner, since the reason you aren't supposed to bathe too often is that it strips the natural oils (and the conditioner helps replace that moisture). Besides the emergency grossness baths, we bathe every 3-4 months

I like raised water bowls, and they are less likely to dig in a raised water bowl. But I don't know if there is an automatic waterer that is raised

I'll go first. My favorite sweet potato recipe is this one from epicurious:
Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Brown Sugar and Pecans

It's so yummy and WAY better than the traditional marshmallow topped sweet potatos

1 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans (about 2 ounces)
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) chilled butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces

5 pounds red-skinned sweet potatoes (yams), peeled, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces

4 large eggs
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons salt

Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix sugar, pecans and butter in small bowl. Cover and chill until ready to use. (Can be made up to 2 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

Butter 13 x 9 x 2-inch glass baking dish. Cook sweet potatoes in large pot of boiling salted water until very tender, about 12 minutes. Drain. Let stand in colander 15 minutes. Purée sweet potatoes in processor.

Beat eggs, syrup, vanilla, lemon juice and salt in large bowl. Mix in puréed sweet potatoes. Transfer sweet potato mixture to prepared dish. Sprinkle pecan topping evenly over mixture.

Bake until sweet potato mixture is set and topping bubbles, about 1 hour. Let stand 15 minutes and serve.

try renting a steamer vac from the grocery store. I used one a couple weeks ago on a tenant's rent and where there was a stain I used the small attachment to go over just the spot a few times and they pretty much all came out. And doing it yourself is alot  - I paid about $35 for the machine rental with the extra attachment for the day and $12 for the cleaning solution

I use EQyss ( http://www.eqyss.com/ ). It's pretty pricey but really high quality, great for the skin and hair, and smells super pretty

vmimom2006, the most popular grain free is probably EVO http://www.evopet.com/ Some other ones that come to mind are wellness core, nature's variety instinct, and solid gold barking at the moon.

The dog food project also has a list of grain free dog foods http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=grain_free

If your dog is having ear issues you should deffinately try grain free. If you don't want to go grain free, you should at least look for a good quality food with no corn in it

That is so interesting. I had no idea dog scooped the water under their tounge. I always assumed it was the opposite

Holly has a good point. Grace could deffinately be getting these infections from an allergy to her food. What is she eating now? If it has corn in it, you should deffinately try and switch to a a food that at least doesn't have corn in it, since that is the one food ingredient most notorious for causing allergies and yeast infections
