32  BPO Growl & Howl Forum / Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Terrible day at the dog park! >=( (Long) on: May 22, 2009, 11:59:22 AM
Today my dog became the type of dog that I get mad at people for bringing to the dog park!

We prob. shouldn't have gone in the first place.  I upped my dose on one of my supplements so my head was all spacey and in the clouds before we went so I wasn't in the best state of mind to begin with.

It started off okay, we walked around once, then when we got to the clearing, I noticed a beautiful great big Great Dane.  Naja said hello, and was a little nervous around him, but I didn't think anything of it.  We walked around again going the opposite way of the lady and her Great Dane.  We met up with the lady and the Gr. Dane (I've forgotten his name sorry)again at the other side of the park and I get to talking to her about London Big Dogs and give her a card for the group, Naja and the Dane run off.  She's a little worried, but again, I didn't think anything of it.  Then all of a sudden we hear this horrible screeching yelping cry come from the direction that our dogs ran.  So we run after them in that direction, Naja comes bolting past us tail between her legs and the Dane close on her heels!  We both get a hold of our dogs, and then the Dane goes after her again!  She lets out that Horrible noise again while snapping after him (it almost seemed to me like a frightened girl screaming F Off!! to an attacker).  I reacted terribly to it, and grabbed her collar and marched off with her.  We get around the corner, and I pour some water for them, because now Naja is panting and drooling, and eating grass like crazy.  Well a couple of smaller dogs come along, and Naja lunges for them like she wants to kill them!  So I'm apologizing profusely to their owners, and I put her leash on her to gain a little bit more control over her.  I should have left right then and there, but I figured she'd calm down and then be okay.  She almost got into 2 more fights before I finally got it into my head that we need to leave!  BTW she kept eating grass like crazy and refused to drink any water.

Well!  Right as I was trying to get her and Moo ready to leave, and man in work coveralls comes up to say hello, I've seen him before but never really talked to him, and he kind of creeped me out personally.  He kept talking to me and wanting to see my tattoo. He tried to lean in close to look at my arm piece and Naja literally lunged for his neck!  The dummy didn't back up!  I had to drag her snarling and snapping away from him!  I finally got Moo on leash when the guy's dog comes up and Naja attacks it!  I had a tight grip on her leash and she didn't actually touch the dog, thank goodness.  But then when I was apologizing to him he starts going "It's okay, it's a dog Park, Dogs are gonna attack each other" WHAT?!  I tell him No that's not okay, and it's completely unacceptable behavior from ANY dog, especially mine!  and I get her and Moo the heck out of the park.

But now I feel like one of those owners that I hate!  The kind that have aggressive dogs and that can't control them!  Naja is a dominant dog, I know that, and usually I'm pretty good at steering us around any potential problems, and getting her out of situations that could go badly.  Today I sucked at being a dog owner, and I sucked at protecting her from a bad situation.

How do I re instill the trust that I'm going to protect her now? I feel like now she's not sure that I'm the one who is supposed to do the protecting because of the way I reacted to her screaming at the Dane.  Embarrassed Sad

BTW:  She's sleeping peacefully in the doorway to the computer room right now.  Poor baby...

Good for you Erin!  You're one smart cookie!  But then again, we've always known that!  Wink  And good luck with the Berner Puppy, just be careful you don't end up bringing home 2!  And yes, now that things are staring to settle a little bit for you, we'll expect to see more pictures from you!!  Wink Grin

Poor Baby Lola!  Could you crush the pill up and mix it into something irresistible?  Naja will eat them wrapped up in cheddar cheese, little piggy doesn't suspect a thing.  She's just thrilled to be getting cheese.  Roll Eyes
35  BPO Off Topic Forum / Anything Non-Dog Related / NDR - My very first race! on: May 20, 2009, 04:01:15 AM
Some of you may know that I've been going through a total lifestyle renovation!  I've applied to the RCMP, and have made it through the first 2 parts of their application process, the written test and a super hard physical test that I've been training super hard for, for 2 months now!  Well, I started out with a Learn to Run clinic, and am going to be running my very first race on Sunday!  I'm running to help raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research!  It's no marathon mind you (only 5Km), but it's a good start to hopefully a whole lifetime of running!

I've set a personal fundraising goal for myself at $150, and I thought, since you guys are my closest Cyber friends, I'd hit you up too!  Grin

Here's a link to my donation page, if you feel like checking it out.  If you can't donate, I'd love to hear some words of encouragement from my friends as well!

Good Grief!  If its not one thing its another it seems!  Thank goodness you had your phone, and the presence of mind to call your neighbor.  Doesn't Syrus know that you've had enough heart ache for awhile, and you really don't need to be wondering about another Bubs' joints just yet?  Let alone the strain on your poor pocket book!

Well here's hoping that he didn't do too much damage, and that he heals up quickly with little medication.

I'm so sorry!  Poor Lola, it's no fun when it hurts to pee!  Here's hoping that it's nothing more then a nasty UTI, and the antibiotics clear it right up.  Thanks for the Timbit tip though!  I never woulda thought of that!  The Wiki-article was cute.  Smiley
38  BPO General Forum / General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Two Wolves on: May 18, 2009, 03:23:36 PM
Got this in an email, thought of all the people I could share it with, you guys would appreciate it the most.

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, 'My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.'

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: 'Which wolf wins?'

The old Cherokee simply replied, 'The one you feed.'

40  BPO Rainbow Bridge Forum / Remembering those no longer with us. / RIP Bear on: May 18, 2009, 08:54:32 AM
I just got off the phone with my neighbor, the one who had Bear the Great Pyr that he rescued from the Menonites.  Well Terry and I had been going back and forth for quite a while now.  I've been trying to convince my step father to let me take Bear in, or trying to convince Terry to give Bear up to a Great Pyr Rescue.  About 2 weeks ago I was told that Terry had gotten Bear neutered, I was really excited, I thought finally, Bear is going to be taken care of, he's been fixed, Terry is taking responsibility for him.  Today I was talking to Terry and he told me he had to have Bear put down.  He said Bear had become aggressive and had bitten 4 people.  I am heartbroken.  I have so much guilt right now, because I should have known better. I should have taken Bear in as soon as he was neutered.  I know that the problem did not actually lie in Bear,  He would have been kept outside even after the surgery.  His stitches prob. became infected, and he was in so much pain this was the only way he could convey that.  Had he have been kept in a steryl environment, or had he have been put on anti-biotics this wouldn't have happened.  He was a sweet, gentle, wonderful dog.  I feel that Bear was put into my path for a reason, and I let him down.

I'm sorry Bear.  I hope you find peace, and lots of love wherever you are.  Cry Cry Cry

Modified to add some pictures of Bear.

I was just messing around on Photobucket, and I found this really great thinger called Remix on there.  And I made a slide show of Miss Naja, the song I think is an independent artist and I really like it.

45  BPO Training Forum / Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: my new doggie.....likes the kitchen counter on: May 15, 2009, 04:50:05 PM
I've never tried this, but people on the board have talked about it, and it seems really mean, sneaky and underhanded (I can't wait to try it!).  Tie some old pop cans and other really noisy freaky stuff to a hot dog with a bit of a length of string, and leave it on the counter.  Then leave the kitchen and wait for the CRASH!!  With any luck it'll scare the pup so much that he won't attempt it again, especially when the scary noise making cans follow him and the hot dog!!  Wink

Good luck with whatever you try. Cheesy
