Itchy patches on face and neck????
« on: June 04, 2006, 09:13:42 pm »
The last couple of weeks Kayzer has had itchy patches on his face and neck, I took him to my vet and she figures it is some kind of skin disorder that Great Danes get when they are about his age caused by their rappid growth and their immune system??? Has anyone ever seen this type rash before? The medication she gave him seems to be useless. It hasnt helped him at all. He is still scratching like crazy and even to the point that he draws blood. None of my other animals have anything like this so Im assuming that it isnt contageous. Any idea what it could be???
My vet said she figures it is some kind of parasite.
I have been giving him benadryl for the itching and putting polysporin on the patches and it works very well. Any other home remedies that might help my baby with his itchy scratchy problem would be great!!!
Thanks
Carole

Could it be hot spots?  What do the patches look like?  Hot spots are really, really itchy and (from our experience with our Rotti who's now at the bridge) are easy to get rid of...

Badger had sore spots around his neck, in a ring.  The vet had NO idea.  He thought it was everything under the sun.  Finally we went to a specialist and found out it was just a 'run of the mill rash' (whatever that means) and to use hydrocortizone cream (found at costco for humans!) It worked wonders!
It hasn't come back since we switched him to raw food, so I think it might have been a food allergy.
Hope this helps...

When Bella had a large growth spurt, it was demodectic mange.  I'm sorry to even bring it up, but when your vet said that it may be due to the large growth and his immune system, I couldn't help but think that.  Bella's was also around her face and mouth.  Hopefully that's not it, but if it is then he needs to be treated specifically for that.

I think you might be right! She did mention the word demodectic but she didnt say anything about mange??? And she also said it wasnt contageous? Im thinking of getting him Revolution for flea and mange treatment. I have never heard of dogs getting mange in my area, It really didnt cross my mind. A friend of mine has a Dane and she told me that there are two different kinds of mange and that one kind is not contageous to other kinds of dogs but very catchy for Danes because of their immune systems. Im not sure if this is right but it sounds like I will have to get him back to the vet, Unfortunately!!! I wish she would have fixed it the first $125.00 trip!!!
I might try some hydrocortisone(sp)? And see if it helps!
I have to do something soon, the poor guy is so itchy its driving him and I crazy!
I dont think its hot spots, they seem to be small bumps not really patches.
Thanks for all your help! I will let you know how I make out.

Demodectic mange isn't contagious, and is caused by a mite.  I found this page with more info:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/demodectic_mange.html

*Note -- the mite on the page is kinda creepy, and I have NO idea what's up with the triclops dog, but good info still.
Thanks Jenn:
Good info on the site! The pic of the dog is rather strange looking! LOL
Its good to know that it isnt catchy but it still sounds kind of yucky, and hard to get rid of.
Bella's mom said she had this when she was growing, Maybe she could tell me how hard it was to control?
Thanks again

Hi, again.  My vet explained to me that because their immune systems are changing, that this mite can kinda take over.  If it was an older dog, then usually it shows that there is something really wrong with it's immune system.  They are always present, but in tiny, tiny numbers.  No, this kind is not contagious, but it can become more advanced (which is not good).  Bella had to have four dips, two weeks apart for each, at the vet's office.  The medicine specifically for demodex is very strong, so your baby will not feel well for a day or so, but once you finish the treatment there are usually no more problems.  Bella had it when she was about 3 or 4months old.  She's almost 11 months old now, and no problems!!

Oh, yes, I just remembered the name of the dip.  It was called Mitaban.  I have heard some people say that they have used some kind of cream, but I really trusted my vet's approach.  I really wondered if the application of cream was really enough to kill the little nasty things! :D

Thanks! thats good to know! I read on the site Doghealer posted that you can treat the skin infection with paroxide and also if it isnt to bad that you dont really have to treat it with anything but I am bringing Kayzer to the vet anyway and having him checked out AGAIN!!!I have been puting Paroxide on the really bad spots and it seems to be helping the itching alot. They also mention the dip Mitaban on the site. I dont think Kayzers are that bad yet so hopefully I wont have to go that route but we will soon find out!!
Thanks again for all the info!

Kayzer went to the vet today and was given some antibiotics to treat his skin for a skin infection and some equilan for his demodectic mange. She is positive that is the problem and she has assured me that it is not contageous and he will grow out of it completely in time.
Hope this works!!! Kayzer tipped the scale at 123 1/2 lbs
today. I was shocked!  :o  He loves going to the vet and he is such a gentlemen when he is there. He makes me so proud!  :-*
