Glucosamine/Chondroitin

I found this posted at another dog group...What think you all?

The recent NIH (National Institutes of Health) GAIT study appears to the authoritative source on glucosamine & chondroitin use vis-a-vis osteoarthritis to date:

http://nccam.nih.gov/research/results/gait/qa.htm

Please note the following:
1. G&C is NOT used for bone strength. It (supposedly) affects cartilage degeneration in joints.
2. They provided statistically significant pain relief to participants with moderate-to-severe osteoarthritic joint pain but NOT to those with only mild pain
3. Neither glucosamine nor chondroitin provided statistically significant pain relief when used alone (i.e., not in combination with each other)
4. There is insufficient evident to support using G&C for prophylactic use (i.e., to prevent cartilage regeneration)
5. G&C should not be used by those with shellfish allergies, as they are shellfish derivatives
6. These supplements are regulated as food, not as drugs. (You can find an evaluation of the actual amount of the ingredients in various brands at ConsumerReport s.com.)

KEY TAKE-AWAY: In all but severe cases specifically of osteoarthritis, it is probably not helpful to give your pet glucosamine and chondroitin. I am not aware of EVIDENCE-BASED scientifically-conducted studies proving any efficacy in pets. Better to save your money or buy a more comfortable bed.

I sort of heard this through Cowboy's breeder...that's why we use Cetyl M....I have no idea how good it is except he was limping (arthritis in both front elbows) when we got him and he hasn't limped at all since he's been on Cetyl M.

Maybe it's a coincidence??

WHY IS KATIE'S BUMPERS CARRYING A SUPPLEMENT WHEN WE ARE A DOG TOY COMPANY FOR THE ACTIVE DOG?
Here is our story:

We, my husband Greg and I, had a malamute for 12 years.  We rescued Brio at 18 months.  At 11 years and 130 lbs, he was having major hip problems.  As you have seen with your dogs, he was having a very difficult time getting up and laying down.  You could just tell he was in pain.  This was our best friend and we (like you) would try most anything to help him feel better and have a longer life.  Putting him down was NOT an option.

My folks, Katie's parents, have 16 Newfies.  Mom suggested that we put Brio on Chondroitin, but it only worked for a short time.  Then we found Joint Response.  It is now Cetyl M.  We put Brio on this in the spring of 2002.  The results were incredible.  He wasn't acting like a 2 year old, but he had an amazing amount of mobility.  Other than his hips, he was in perfect health.  We had him on Joint Response for 2 1/2 years.  We added in extra MSM, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, later on, we added some Nupro to his food.  Everything helped, but the Joint Response (Cetyl M) saved his life and gave Brio and us an extra 2 1/2 years with him.

I just knew that if we had this kind of success, that other people could too.  I am bringing this product to you as a gift for your older dogs.  I just started carrying it in October, so the stories are trickling in.  So far, we have heard amazing stories from just noticeable improvement to dogs being able to walk again.

If you decide that you want to try it, I will help you in any way that I can.  It is not the end all for every dog, but even if you are able to give your dog more comfort and mobility, you will both be so grateful.

Cats can take this too.

THE STORY OF CETYL MYRISTOLEATE:
THE MIGHTY MOUSE THAT BEAT BACK ARTHRITIS

Cetyl Myristoleate was discovered by the late Harry Diehl, a research chemist at the National Institute of Health (NIH). In addition to isolating Cetyl Myristoleate and more than 500 other first-time compounds, Diehl is also known for discovering a method for synthesizing the unique sugar form used in the preparation of Dr. Jonas Salk's oral polio vaccine.

But what about the mouse? Well, during Diehl's research on arthritis, he discovered that he was unable to induce arthritis in a particular species of Swiss albino mice. He theorized that these particular mice carried a special trait that helped prevent the onset of arthritis—- and he eventually was able to isolate Cetyl Myristoleate as the secret compound.

To test his theory, he pretreated a species of rat susceptible to arthritis with the Cetyl Myristoleate he had isolated from the Swiss mouse. And when he tried to induce arthritis in these rats, lo and behold, he could not.

Diehl's quest for an effective treatment for arthritis was spawned by his desire to help a close friend who suffered terribly from a debilitating form of arthritis. His friend passed away before Diehl discovered Cetyl Myristoleate and, amazingly, his discovery went relatively unattended for more than 30 years.

As fate would have it, Diehl later developed degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) himself. Unable to find lasting relief from treatments of cortisone and a variety of the usual non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, he returned to the lab and “- cooked up” another batch of Cetyl Myristoleate. He then mixed it with a topical solution that acted as a carrier and applied it to his ailing joints. It worked! And his joints were completely pain free after only 10 days.

Today, your animals can enjoy the same relief and benefits from this natural joint-enhancer in Advanced Cetyl M® Joint Action Formulas for dogs and horses. And just think, it all started with a mouse.
