Lost my best friend today
« on: October 24, 2006, 07:46:08 am »
Just got home from putting my 7 year old Newfie "Thunder" down due to bone cancer. He made it 4 months after the diagnosis, which was longer than we expected. I've had many different dogs but Thunder was truly sent from Heaven... my very best friend. Don't know what I will do without him. What a sweet companion. I hope I will get to the point of getting another Newf before too long. I love the breed. Today I'm just trying to cope with not having him by my side, but not doing very well. I hope it gets easier in time.

It will get easier, but never goes completely away. Just remember he always will have a place in your heart. Your next friend will make his own place and you'll love him too.

Sorry for your loss.

Hello,

I put my best friend Greta to sleep last night due to bone cancer, too. She was diagnosed in July, though there were signs, such as low white blood cell count, nearly nine months before. So, she lived almost four months past her date of diagnosis, though I know the cancer was present for a while. She was slower for the past year, panted a lot, and didn't want to do much.

I, too, am having a rough day. I'll tell you, honestly, yesterday was a blur. The past three days were a blur. Last night was the first night I could sleep and, even then, I kept waking up because my entire body is cramped. My nerves are shot and I am really in pain today...all over. In addition, I'm having trouble with dreams and reality. As I said, yesterday was a blur. When the vet came to our house I shut down and, while I wailed my brains out probably slobbering and snotting all over the place, I can't tell you if anyone else was crying, where they were standing...I can't even tell you who was in the room at the time.

It's going to hurt violently for a very, very long time. I loved her fiercely. To watch that cancer eat her strength away, having so many friends, loves, and acquaintances attacked by the disease, it is the only force I can feel anger toward. Damn cancer.
I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.  For me they are the role model for being alive.  ~Gilda Radner

So sorry for your loss. I just lost a good friend to menigitis. He was a fellow skydiver ( = family) and the only way that I've known how to cope with his loss is to tell myself that Josh is now with me where ever I go.  SO, your pooch is with you at work, at the store, in the car, at home, in your dreams, etc. (Places he could never go before!)... Now his spirit is part of yours, and you will be forever blessed for having his presence in your life.  He'll always be with you...

Take care of yourself  :-*

What a wonderful way to think of it!

Having lost my first two Newfs at only three years old, I know the agony of your loss.  Please accept my condolences and drools from my Newfs!!

I'm so sorry for your loss!  Sounds like you were both very lucky - him to have such a great parent and you to have such a great dog.  It really will get better.  We lost 3 dogs in about 4 months last year and it just seemed like the losses never stopped.  I cried every night for months after I lost Thor, my Pyr.  Healing does happen though, sometimes when you least expect it.  I do believe in getting another dog, but only when you are ready for it.  You'll know when that time is right.  The itch will start and just work away at you until you find the right dog.

I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying,
You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly
As you brushed away a tear,
"It's me,I haven't left you,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here"

I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea,
You were thining of the many times,
Your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today,
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you,
That I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house,
As you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired,
And sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know,
That I was standing there.

It's possible for me,
To be so near you every day.
To say to you with certainty,
"I never went away."

You sat there very quietly,
Then smiled,I think you knew...
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you.

The day is over...
I smile and watch you yawning,
And say,"good-night,God Bless,
I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you,
To cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you,
And we'll stand,side by side.

I have so many things to show you,
There is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...
Then come home to be with me.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about the loss of Thunder.  We lost our Barkley to cancer in May, and BPO saw me through it in a big way.  I hope you'll find it in yourself to remember and celebrate Thunder's life with us when you're up to it.  In the meantime, be kind to yourself and accept the support you will find here.  Again, I'm so sorry.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Sure do miss my boy, but have great memories. I see you have Lanseers. Are they the same personality as blacks? Gentle, laid back? What can you tell me about yours?
Thanks
