Not Sure How She Did It
« on: November 21, 2006, 12:01:08 pm »
Willow has a cracked toe nail on her back paw.  It is cracked all the way up the middle and looks like it was bleeding.  I never really noticed her limping or anything.  Anyone else dealt with this?

My uncles pit bull did this when she was running around chasing rabbits at our cabin.... We took her into the vet and they cut the nail and cleaned it out.... I hope everything is okay with your girl! best of luck!

Apollo chews his back toenails *yuck* and this happens all the time with him. We usually just take him to the Vet and she takes them off for him. Otherwise, they can get snagged and then you're talking SERIOUS BLEEDING.

I swear he does it just so he can go drool on the Vet. She's a cutie, and I swear he's got a cross-species crush on her.  ::) ::)

Best bet is to take poor Willow in and have them remove the nail, it's a relatively simple thing, but it saves a lot of pain in case it gets snagged on anything....

Thank you all for the advice - The vet won't have to sedate her to get at the toenail?  I just worry about anesthesia and Danes.  It doesent seem to bother her but it looks terrible.  Tomorrow I will call the vet.

Where do you get a dremmel?  I looked at petsmart but they didn't have any.  Is there a special one for dogs or is it like the ones at home depot?

Aw poor Willow...I have to agree on the dremel too. Pucks use to split, they don't with the dremel now.
I bought one at the home depot.

we've had many cracked toenails.  Grace likes to lunge and turn and just whail in the yard.  seems like as soon as a nail grows...it breaks and cracks.  i just snip off what i can and she's back to normal.
backing soda and water will stop any bleeding there may be. in case you ever need to know.

It looks like the whole hard outside part of the nail is gone and raw inside is all I can see.  The vet was closed - they will be open in the am so I will call.
