with the howling and escaping, both are completely normal behavoirs for malamutes, since each mal is different I would strongly suggest training, we use PetsMart training as they have classes that accommodate my schedule with work. It could take 6 weeks for all the hormones to get out of his system, with regards to your husband, he could just sense some vibes.
