Wanna know what your mixed breed really is?
« on: October 11, 2007, 10:44:13 am »
I read this article about DNA testing done on your dog to determine exactly what mix of breeds it is. Do you care enough to pay for this? It seems kind of crazy. In the end, it's still the same unconditional-loving animal.

HAHAHAHA! When I saw that it was $65, I was totally ready to go for it. But, it doesn't test for Newfoundland? Weird. hahha, that's what I suspect Cabeza has in him. So, totally not worth it. Bummer!

It would be interesting to test a purebred dog and see what comes up.

Do you think the wolf part would come out?  ;D

I saw an article about this also.  The article that I read was talking about 2 different places that do the DNA testing.  One place is $65 but they only have 38 breeds that are identified and the other is more expensive (article didn't say how expensive) and they have 100 and some odd different breeds that are identified.  I would be interested to see what my guys would come up as since they have a Belgian Terv listed.  I wonder if the DNA would be the same since in Europe all the Belgian Shepherds are considered varities of the same breed but they are different breeds here in the States.
Kaila - Belgian Malinois
Shiner - Malinois x Ridgeback
Toulouse, Cayenne, Raven - DSH

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off. We apologize for the inconvenience

And no  Great Dane or IW listed either, poor Strider would come back as a Saber toothed Goat or something, LOL
Stella

Stella, you have such a way with words!  ;D  I'm LMAO here.   ;D

I really would love to do this for Daisy & Cassie.  It might work w/Daisy since the BYB's that were selling her outside a grocery store said that she was Golden/Lab but I've always suspected that she has a little collie in there, too.  She has a slim face and muzzle and her ears look like they could almost stand up like a collie.  Cassie is Pyr/? and the ? is probably Maremma, Samoyed, Husky or some mix of them all.  She is a bit of a mystery to us, but so unbelievably wonderful that I'd love to watch Petfinders for a similar mix someday if I knew what to look for.  No one will ever be the same as Cassie but I think that it would be wonderful to rescue another dog and find out who they are, too.  :-*
Marie

And my pups:
Daisy a 9 y/o Golden/Lab mix
Sammy a 6-7(?) y/o Great Pyrenees adopted 3/07
Cassie a 3 y/o Pyr/Mystery Snuggle Bunny mix adopted 2/07

My angel girls waiting at the Bridge:
Cara 1989-2001 Great Pyrenees
Sally ? - 1993 Dobie(rescued '92)
Halley 2002-2006 Great Pyrenees

My sister did this with her rescue (we think she's a Finnish Spitz).  Her results came back on Wednesday.  All her major breeds were unidentifiable, and the only minor breed that showed up was Border Collie.  They did send her a notice and discount to re-do it once they get more breeds in their database.

I've thought about running Woody and Maple through it, but, with Maple, I'd rather be ignorant than have her info come back with PB in it.  No, I'm not against PB's, I know several VERY loving ones, but, my Home Owners Insurance would drop us~!  And, for those of you in states where PB's and other breeds are banned, would it/could it be used against you?

If its just a tool, I think its great, 'cause I've always had MUTTS :-)
Alyce

Woody  (aka Big Dog) (12 1/2) Shorthaired Laberaimer (1/2 German Shorthair, 1/4 Lab, 1/4 Weimaraimer)
Maple (aka Princess Poo) (7 1/2) Boxer/ GS mix
Fuzzy (15 1/2)long haired tabby cat
Trouble & Double 3 1/2 year old African Leopard Tortoises.
