supplements??
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:58:08 am »
Hi,

I was given a recommendation by my groomer to give Jenny fish oil supplements and/or to pour a little olive oil on her food for her skin and coat. I wanted to check with all of you on this as I thought if I fed her a high quality food that she wouldn't need any supplements? I feed her Innova Large Breed formula. The groomer said that sometimes the higher end foods don't have as much fat content in them, so that supplementing can be helpful for the coat. Does anyone here supplement? Do you notice a difference? Does it cause diarrhea? Any thoughts?  ???

I use Salmon Oil and Vitamin E. I have been using it since I brought Lily home. She has a great coat and never had any skin issues.  ;D It doesn't cause diarrhea  :)

I have fed supplements before, and am thinking of adding them again especially for Issy even though she doesn't really NEED them right now.  I was thinking more of a preventative.  But I do from time to time add oil, just like a tsp, my mom used to add the oil too.  It would cause diarrhea, sometimes at first, so we would just add a bit less.  When the great dane lady was talking about feeding, even the high end, she also talked about adding supplements.  If I can find that portion of her talk, I'll add it.

Do you just pour it on her food? How much do you give her?

The measurements are on the bottle. I use 10 pumps of oil for her weight and 1 gel cap of E.  :)

I give Max 3 fish oil softgels a day.  He takes them and chews them up like treats.  Jake and Cody each get 2 a day.  It really helps, not only are their coats nice and shiny, they definitely scratch less.  I started with 1 a day and added another after a couple of weeks.  That way their system can adapt to it.  I also give only 1 at a time and space them through the day.

Cabeza gets one or 2 fish oil capsules a day. I take them, too. So, everytime I have mine, I give him one. He sit/stays for it. He loves them. They don't make his poopies loose as long as you don't over do it. I also give him Dream Coat every now and then. (He doesn't get the fish oil on the days he gets Dream Coat) I put the Dream Coat right on his food.

He's also on Innova Large Breed. I just feel as if he can always use the extra oils for his coat. But, its also good for muscles and what-not.

I read that Coconut oil helps, too (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Nutiva-Organic-Coconut-Oil/255005.aspx).
I was giving Bo Salmon Oil, but it PACKED on the pounds...and since I'm trying to keep the weight off of her, it ended up causing more problems than it solved.  Also, Flax oil is good, but it can be used as a laxative, so if you give them too much-look out!
