TPLO times 2
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:19:08 am »
Hello,
I haven't posted to the board in a long time. I have missed reading about all our extra large loves. My Chumley is a seven year old 155 pound mixed Malamute/Dane. In fall of 2006 he underwent TPLO surgery. It was a dreadful experience. The surgeon though very skilled had zero bedside manner. Neither did any of the staff members of this highly acclaimed clinic. Chumley's recovery was a nightmare. He became a different dog, he was aggresive and distrustful. After nine months he was back to normal and his leg was good as new. Now he has torn his other knee. He is perfectly healthy though it was suggested when weighing my options that his life span would only be a couple more years. I couldn't fathum ending his life for a bum knee. I am willing to take on more debt but am so worried about him. I don't want to use the same surgeon but he is the best according to my vet. I dread Chumley going through this again. I could use some advice. I live in Ohio but would be willing to travel to find the right surgeon. Also has anyone ever encountered alternative therapies since this seems to be so common?

There has been discussion about TPLO and options on this board so searching the forum may help provide some information.  There is information available - a conservative management Yahoo Group has resources.  Canine rehab folks may also be a resource.  Acupuncture may also be helpful.  Of course it will not repair the joint  however may make your dog more comfortable.  Have you tried any alternative therapies, homeopathy or supplements?  For many reasons we choose conservative management with Cirra instead of the TPLO.  She does have some arthritis however would have arthritis will the surgery as well.

I know nothing about TPLO but did some research after reading your post.  I read a most interesting journal of another family that went through this.  Although it happened a few years back I found the reading very interesting.  Hope it might help you with your decision.

What about OSU's vet school? A teaching college should have highly competent surgeons available, plus plenty of eager students for after care. Cost is generally more affordable too??!! Barring that if you want to travel to Pittsburgh, PA, I can recommend Pgh Veterinary Specialists and Dr Anthony Pardo in particular. He performed double TPLO's on my Raemi and he and his staff were wonderful! Open 24/7 too, as it also is an emergency clinic. Will send you contact info if you are interested. Referral from your vet is necessary.

There is a new alternative to TPLO or TTA surgery that may be ideal for some dogs with CCL injuries.  It's minimally invasive and has less complications.  The TPLO's are very invasive and involve bone cutting, plates, and screws.  I read about it here...it's pretty cool stuff!

I've talked to my vet about TPLO surgory.  I am looking toward my 4th and final ACL replacement surgory with Grace and when she had her first leg done and I asked about TPLO, the vet told me there are drawbacks.  He said TPLO is commonly used for show dogs who need to be back on their feet sooner than a normal, more time consuming ACL replacement surgory.  It is also twice the cost as the surgory i've had done with Grace, who's working on needing her left leg done, and Lady, who had both of her ACL's done within 6 motnhs.  I wasn't in a big hurry to get Grace back on her feet and the vet doesn't see the need to put plates and screws in her legs just to avoid the 4 months of recovery.
On a side note, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my vet and the surgical center that's linked with it.  If you want to travel to SW Michigan I can give you their number and if you ended up staying in town while you wait the night to pick up your pup you'd at least know someone in town.  I can't see why you can get the follow up visits/staple removal at your local vet.  let me know and i'll be happy to help.  Where in Ohio are you?
