Ihave a couple of questions...??
« on: March 15, 2009, 02:59:44 am »
Good morning Folks,
I have a couple of questions for the more experienced Pyr and biger paws parents.
1. I currently am feeding Sam Iams Large Breed Puppy and he is doing fine on it but I have seen on this and site and a few others were people recommend other types of food like Innova and Canaide. Are these food type better than what I am feeding? I have looked at the web sites for these foods and the food seem really good but how much better is good enough. My quandry..price and the fact I will have to either ship or travel to get them. No local supplier where I live. I want to feed him the best I can. So what do you all think??

2. Has any one used the Furminator on their Pyrs' I am not having a prob. with Sams grooming but he still has his baby fur. And is just now starting to get big boy fur donw his back. I have had Giant Mali's in the past and they are some shedding beasts too. ;D Keep them good with a rake and comb and brush. The furminator looks promising but will it work with the longish double coat Sam will have?

Sorry this is so long but the more research I do the more I want to ask other Pyr and Big hairy puppies parents what they use and think. I trust the judgement of yall' that have <a href="http://s152.photobucket.com/albums/s178/oldfart07/?action=view&current=S6300717-2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s178/oldfart07/S6300717-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">[/url]practical experience.
Thanks for the help...and I'll up load some pics of His Hairy Highness later.

Furminator didn't work for me  :( It's great for de-shedding legs and paws but Pyrs hair is too dense and thick to use it elsewhere. Don't waste your money on it...good de-shedding shampoo and rake usually do the job  ;)

As for food, Iams is not good food at all  :( Here is the review so you can get an idea why

It's really worth it investing into a better food now to prevent issues that will occur from poor nutrition later  :)

Gunther was on Iams for Hmmmmm........ at least the first year of his life.  Was better than the purina and beneful the breeder had him on.  And he did perfectly fine on it growthwise, healthwise and otherwise.  ;)

I think tho I had him on the adult I don't know if I ever had him on the puppy food.  We did switch later to Nutro natural choice and are now on Taste of the Wild.

I understand you have to go with what you can afford and the high quality foods are not always manageable.  I was going broke trying to feed Evo, although Keiko is still on that for the moment.

I use the furminator on Keiko on occasion.  It works alright.  But unless your pup is loosing undercoat it probably won't be doing much.  When they are switching over from puppy to adult coat they do look kinda scruffy and poofy in places........ ....but as that's not really undercoat I'm not sure the fuminator would take the hair off as well?

Thanks guys/girls,
I have found a local dealer for the Innova food. She only stocks a few kinds but can order it for me. I was appalled and amazed that what they can and do sell for our dogs to eat. One of the most startling things is the "brand name" foods that are just crap. I want to thank you all for the help. My Hubby and I watch what we eat and try to eat really clean and green so to feed our baby junk is just not the way we want to live. Thanks again and I'm sure Sam will thank you too...when he wakes up from his nap. :)
