Overseas Scams-puppy mills
« on: October 05, 2005, 08:12:26 pm »
I got a call from an ad I placed for a foster dog today and they wanted me to ship her overseas.  I feel funny about the whole thing because they didn't ask anything except the adoption price and when they could send the money.  I've heard about so many scams and overseas puppy mills that I'm very concerned.  I'm not shipping an unspayed female overseas to someone sight unseen who is very likely going to turn around and breed her until she can't stand.  One guy from the UK said he wanted to give the dog to his daughter for her upcoming birthday, but there is a 6 month quarantine in the UK, isn't there?  I don't want this dog sitting isolated for 6 months.  Any suggestions?

I got another email from a woman in Canada who said she wanted to adopt her.  She already had the carrier all lined up.  Isn't that weird?  I see hundreds of dogs for adoption in Cananda listed on Petfinder.  Why this dog?  Why pay to ship an animal when she could probably go to the local shelter and get one?  That wasn't the weirdest part though.  She said she was originally from Florida, moved to Canada for a job, but her email address is a dot ru which is russia.  What is going on with people?

the sistuations both sound suspicious but don't automatically discount canadians.  i live in alberta and the closest rescue i can find is in ontario but i also don't know where to look so there might be more but when i got my puppy i had a crate and stuff already because i had a dog before.  also alot of the rescues i've seen up here require a home visit.  great idea but if you live on the opposite side of the country it doesn't work so well

I've been doing a lot of breed and breeder research, having no babies right now, and the .ru email address is one of the things I've read about being an ENORMOUS heads up, and that's made me even more determined to do a LOT more research about breeds and breeders before I commit to my next one.

I don't know if you're aware, but there's a group of people, ostensibly Russians, who have been running puppy mills and breed scams all over the place for 10 or more years now.  One of the names the primary woman involved uses is Anna Frumina--she has animal cruelty convictions in several places, (for which she's currently AKC banned, as a point of information) and has scammed a lot of people, claiming to breed or broker all kinds of rare breed dogs, a lot of which have turned out to be mixed breed similar looking puppies.

This group of people IS known to have been operating in Florida at one point, but moved on, and I haven't read anything recently about where they are.

I would be really, really careful.   I'm not saying it's these people, but your description sounds more than a little like someone trying to set up a similar scam and looking for breeding stock.

That sounds kinda scary.  I'm not one to trust someone right off the bat anyway, but if you feel the situation seems "fishy" it probably is.  Good luck though, hopefully someone legitimit will come forward to help.

My friend's boxer breeder had the same thing happen & refused to send the dog overseas...I too would be uncomfortable with this.

I got five emails alltogether that sounded suspicious.  I did a little research and it turns out that there is a huge cashiers check scam going on right now where the buyer claims to have overpayed, asks you to cash the cashiers check and send the overpayment along with the dog.  2 weeks later your bank notifies you that the cashiers check was a fake and you're out the money and your precious dog.  I plead that all the breeders here visit a website called qualitydog.com and read the forum titled "scam".  I was shocked to say the least.  After reading all that I responded to these people telling them that I only accepted cash or paypal and I didn't hear back from all but one.  The one with the .ru address.  She told me, not asked me, that she was sending the shipper to pick up the dog immediately and to have "it" ready.  She said the shipper would be paying me by cashiers check.  Big Red Flag.  I responded again to her and her supposed shipper that if they so much as stepped foot on my property that I would notify the authorities to the scam they were running.  I haven't heard back since.  Please everyone be careful.  This is getting to be a big thing and I can't bare to think of all those poor puppies being shipped to god knows where to be used for god knows what.

We had the same experience with a vehicle we were looking to sell, actually.  It was a uk email address, and they said that because of their "situation" (their company was actually paying for the car and had already written the cashiers check) and they wanted us to reimburse them the overage from the cashiers check.  Sounded very fishy to us as well, and when we pressed them further we didn't hear back.  Geez, some people will try to scam anything!

Your foster dog is lucky to have someone like you looking out so carefully for her welfare and I am sure you will find her a forever home with someone that will love her and care for her just as much! ;D
I am kind of a big deal!

This is an example of the latest email i received.  There are so many red flags here it's unbelievable.

Dear Sir/Ma,
I am a Veterinary Doctor From Africa
with clients all over West African countries and UK
cities, we also run many zoo in some African cities
and London towns. I have Clinics in most west
African and UK Cities and i'm based in London.
I can assure you that your pet is not
going for an experiment or going to end up in Lab. testing.
I have a client who's interested in your
lovely pet and also willing to pay me anything i
charged to bring it to his lovely home, infact he
would love it to be part of the family for
his birthday Party coming up soon, he's a pet
lover and we pay him visit every week for treatment
to all his pets. I will need to know some certain
things that gets the pet annoyed and things that gets it
aggressive.

For Adoption fee, although i will have to negociate the
Adoption fee you want me to pay. and Inrespect of
payment i have a client in the USA who he has agreed
to procure a Cashier's/Official check or USPS postal money
order for ($5,500.00US) which he's oweing me to you.
All i need to do to make payment easier and faster is
to instruct him to procure a cashier's/Official check or
USPS Postal Money Order and mail it to you on the address
and name you want on
the check or Postal money order. But i would want to
know if i can trust you to send the remainder of the
funds to my shipper via Western union Money
Transfer after deducting your Adoption fee, as soon
as the check or postal money order
get cashed so that my shipper will make arrangement
for the pick up at your location to deliver it to
the Adoptee's home, he will need this money to secure
flight tickets to North and South America to pick
all the Animal i Adopted and deliver all to thier
different homes in UK and wherever. I will like you
to mail me asap to enable me arrange payment.
Furnish me with the name you want on the check or
postal money order, your home address as in
zipcode, city, etc and your contact phone number, so I
can forward it to my client who will purchase the
check or postal money order for the payment.
All you have to do is simple, if you received the
check or USPS Postal Money order, cash it at any
cashing centres nearer to you, deduct your Adoption
fee that we aggreed upon, send the differences to my
shipper via Western union money transfer and my
shipper will come to your place and pick up the pet.
If you have any question or enquiry to make
concerning this transaction.

I know.  I contacted my local news station to see if they would maybe air the story so that more people will become informed.  It was worth a try.  But I'm tired of people trying to rip americans off.  They think our income is "disposable".
