We've always given our dogs chicken soup. It's one of the first things gran taught me to make, when I was about 7.
It's very basic: you just boil the bones out of some chicken legs/thighs in about 6 cups of water, without salt. Leave it on a low boil on the stove top for about two hours, then throw in a couple big carrots and a couple of celery stalks--you aren't going to eat these, so they don't have to be chopped. In about another hour, pick the bones and the carrots and celery out of the broth, skim the fat off the top, then throw in about a half a cup of brown rice for another 45 mintues to an hour, or add egg noodles and let them boil until they're the consistency you want. If you want salt, you salt your own bowl to taste. It's very bland and basic, and just what your stomach, and your dog's, is in need of when you have the crud.
I make this crock pot style too, when I've had to go to work when I was sick--just throw the water, the chicken, the carrots and the celery all in the pot in the morning--it's ready to fish out the bones and carrots and skim off when you get home.Â
