Hi Deena!

Sasha loves some of the recipes from this website: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/1011/dog.htm.  (I tried to go there just now, and it was down...it should be up later.)

I'll post the recipes this evening (after work  ::) ).

Jessica (and Sasha, who is hoping I'll bake something for her now...)

Oh, the website is back up now!

Here are Sasha's favorites:

"Sasha Squares" (Modified from the Archie Squares)
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup milk
2 breakfast sausages, cooked and cut into small pieces
6 tbs. sausage drippings, cold right from refrigerator, not melted or soft!
1 egg, slightly beaten

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour and sugar. Cut in meat drippings until mixture resembles corn meal. Mix in egg. Add enough water so that mixture forms a ball. Using your fingers, pat out dough onto cookie sheet to 1/2" thick. Cut dough into squares appropriate for your dog size. Prick each cookie with fork. Bake 25-30 minutes. Remove from tray and cool on rack. Store in airtight container.

Cheese N Garlic Bites
1 cup wheat flour
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon garlic powder (not garlic salt!)
1 tablespoon soft butter or margarine
1/2 cup milk
Mix flour and cheese together. Add garlic powder and softened butter. Slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough. You may not need all of the milk. Knead on floured board for a few minutes.

Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 350 degrees oven for 15 minutes. Let cool in oven with the door slightly open till cold and firm. Refrigerate to keep fresh.

*Edited to add: many people don't like to feed garlic products to their dogs.  It can be left out of this recipe and just make cheese bites...doggie s like them just as well.  :) *

Enjoy!
Jessica

This is a very easy and inexpensive receipe. I make them for my dogs at least once a month, and give them as gifts in jars decorated w/dog stuff for Christmas:

Peanut Butter Bones

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup skim milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix 2 dry ingredients together. In a separate bowl, mix 2 wet ingredients together until smooth, then combine the wet and the dry together.  knead together to form a dough, and roll out on floured surface to 1/4 in. thick.  Cut w/ cookie cutter (I use a bone shaped cutter) and bake for 10 - 12 minutes. Store in an airtight container.  Makes about 30 bones

I always make some thicker than others and underbake a few, too.  This makes some hard and crunchy and some stay soft and chewey, which is good for my little old dogs with shakey teeth!!

Check out allrecipes. It is a human-food website, but it has a ton of dog recipes too. Here are two lists of dog treat recipes there: http://mrlt.allrecipes.com/lists/112.asp
