Great reading for animal lovers
« on: December 19, 2005, 04:45:00 pm »
For those of you who hasnt yet read James Harriot's series about his work as a vet. In the hot seat topic it came up and I think people on BPO would really like these books, they are funny and emotional and also informative, the author is a vet. in real life, or should I say was a vet. He passes away in 1995 I think it was.

Soooo if you are looking for easy going, fun to read, hard to put down books.....

All Creatures great and small
All things bright and beautiful
All things wise and wonderful

I read the whole series a few years ago and have watches it on TV. They are wonderfully humourous and well written.

If you like James Herriot's books, you'll love Dr David Taylor's too. He has written quite a few books on his memoirs of being a Zoo Vet:

Zoovet
Doctor In The Zoo
Going Wild
Next Panda Please
Wandering Whale
Dragon Doctor
Vet On The Wild Side
The Patient Elephant
The Animals Came Out Two By Two

That should keep you all going for a while.  ;)

FYI, Marit, there is a fourth:
Lord God Made them All

I believe that is the name.

I fell in love with these stories as a kid, when different chapters were excerpted month by month into the Reader's Digest.

His first four books' titles are all lines from a hymn:

All Things Bright and Beautiful
All Creatures Great and Small
All Things Wise and Wonderful
The Lord God Made Them All

There was one more volume of entirely original material:  Every Living Thing.

However, even before he passed away, his works were being packaged into a variety of books:  Cat Stories, Dog Stories, Inspirational Stories, Best of Collections, etc.   Some are collections of old and new, but some are just repackaged old stuff.

I treasure my Dog Stories, in particular the story of a dog named Clancy and an old man without adenoids; it proves that there's a right home for every dog!
