We like this thing:
for thinning out and taking out the mats in that hair.
I don't know if it would be called a Matt rake or not, like what Erin was talking about.

It will thin out the hair a lot under the ear.  I am not a vet, but it seems to it would help the ears breathe better also if you keep the oily fine hair trimmed down.  Bava's ears can get smelly if we don't stay on top of them and keep the hair trimmed, etc.
