: Sad news...Badger needs another surgery :(
: doggylover July 19, 2006, 05:33:56 PM
Badger's vet exam was today.  We took him to the same doctor who did the first TPLO (on his rear right leg) surgery because he is now limping on his rear left leg.  The last surgery was very hard on all of us.  The leg had to be amputated and rotated 16 degrees, flattened, then reattached.

Badger had a terrible reaction to the narcotics.  They made him anxious and he was terrified.  The pain was really bad.  We had to walk him on a sling for 3 months.

I wanted to do this surgery next Monday so that he doesn't have to suffer on that leg for any longer than need be, but David wouldn't hear of it.  He said that he is worried Badger could die from heat stroke if he is weak from surgery.  We have a few weeks of bad heat coming up in our area.  Portland's worst (hottest) weather is now through the 2nd week of August.  Right now they are predicting 100 plus degrees.  We don't have air conditioning.

The surgeon is the best on the west coast, and he agreed that it is better with such a large dog to wait until the weather cools, so I have to watch my baby suffer for a full month.  The surgery is set for August 18th.

I am scared for my baby.  Last time, they found a tumor in his throat and we had to wait a week to find out it wasn't cancer.

As many of you have probably already figured out, I am a bit overly dramatic, and I don't handle things like this very well.  I'm already scared that he will die in surgery.

Poor Pookie.

You are not over dramatic, you love your baby. Good luck on the surgery and hopefully this one wont be as bad as the first one.

I'm so sorry about Pookie!  What awful news!  I hate it when our beloved puppers have to go under the knife.

You know you can whine, cry and rant here and we'll give you all the sympathy you need.  I don't think you are a drama queen when it comes to your dogs (cuz then I'd be one too!! ::)  I completely understand how you feel!!!

Thanks guys...yeah I guess I'm really only a drama queen when it comes to dog stuff.  I get very emotional about my babies.
Thanks for reminding me that I can vent, cry, and whine here...I'm sure there will be PLENTY of that as the surgery date gets closer.
 :-\

I was picking at my fingers on the drive home, making them bleed (this is what I do when I'm really worried) and hubby said, "STOP, Badger's gonna think we're having him put to sleep!"
LOL good perspective!

I hope everything works out for him. Dogs handle surgeries way better then people do. Pookie is very lucky to have you for his Mommy. My sympathy goes out to you and Tealk sends drooly kisses.

Thanks you guys... this means so much!

On a lighter note, this vet office calls Badger 'Monster dog' because from the time he comes in, till he leaves, he grumbles...it is a scary thing. Everyone at the office knows this, and they pretty much ignore his grumping, not taking it seriously at all.
We told the vet about how our new puppy is biting his face constantly and how he won't do anything to correct her, except growl.  Growling with no follow up only worked for about 20 minutes, now she doesn't take his threats seriously.
The vet got down on the floor with Badger and said, "see Monster, this is what happens when you talk constantly...i f you talk too much, nobody listens to you at all!"  to which Badger replied, "grrrrrrrrr".

Don't even think that way Ronda. You know what to expect as far as the pain meds so at least you won't have to deal with that again.

Did you get his crate set up yet?

LOLOL I was too embarresed to tell even you guys this, but no, we didn't bring the crate in.  David was adamant that Badger not have a crate 'like the little dog'...even after my explaining the 'den' thing to him.  I told him that Badger needs a Gossyfree zone, and we compromised.

Badger now has an extra thick twin size orthopedic (VERY expensive) mattress on the floor, taking up a huge part of the living room, which Gossy is not allowed on.  Badger gets his 'safe place' and he is feeling like quite the spoiled 'king of the hill'.  It will also work well for his surgery recuperation.

The living room has been totally taken over by dogs.

Badger looks very comfy on his new bed!!  I am so sorry Badger needs surgery.  I totally understand how you worry about your babies - I think most of us on this site feel the same way.  Hoping the weather chills out for you soon so even though the surgery is in August you will all be more comfortable.

Badger, we will be keeping everything crossed for you!!

Badger looks so comfortable... does he even feel the pea under the mattress???   He IS the  prince!!

We went through a similar event when Otis had his total hip replacement when he was a year old, and we had just brought Lucille home (she was 12 weeks).  It was a special challenge to take him out to pee with his belly band and handle and keep her away from him.

You have all my thoughts, prayers and hugs to help get you through this...remembe r:  think positive - they can read minds!! ;)  Badger will be grand; it's YOU I'm worried about!!! :-* :-*

Awwww!  Badger looks like a king on his new bed!  Poor fella!  That sounds like pretty major surgery  :o  Give him lots of hugs and kisses from all of us here too.  I think waiting is wise.  The heat is hard on these guys and to be recuperating from surgery in it is even worse.  Glad he's got a cozy bed to lay on while ya'll wait!

I am sorry to hear that Badger needs another surgery, Ronda. I don't think that you are too hyper about your babies, we all are to some extent or we wouldn't be here. I'll be around anytime you want to vent, either here or in chat.
The matress for Badger seems like a good comprimise, if it is what works for you and him, and he certainly seems comfy. My only suggestion would be that you put a couple of paper and plastic pads under the sheet post op in case of accidents while he is still woozy. Easy to change and protects the matress.

Poor Badger! I sure hope his surgery goes well. Sorry about this bad news. Zoey and Dolly hope he doesn't have too much pain for now. Feel better soon, Badger!

LOLOL no, I don't think he feels the pea.  We 'knew' he needed this surgery.  We were desperately hoping the doctor would say, 'the damage is minor, we can tape it up and it'll be fine'...or, 'oh he doesn't need surgery, we can do this other thing to fix him right up'.
We knew, but it's worse having a date and a definate diagnosis.
Newflvr, it sounds like you went through a very similar situation with a pupper and a dog post surgery.  We are really dreading that.  I am hoping that four weeks from now I have gotten some good training in with Gossy, so that she is a big girl.  I started today with 'leave it' and I'm teaching her to 'stay' so hopefully those things will help.
:)
I'm sure I'll be fretting over this more as the big day gets closer.

Please know we will always be here for you, especially during Badger's surgery.  We'll all be praying and sending positive thoughts both your way and his, I'm sure he'll make it thru and give mommy lots of slobbery kisses afterwards! ;D

Take care and give Pookie a BIG hug from me and Kate please!!! ;)  And you too! :)

Poor Pookie.  Just make sure that the Gossinator understands completely that the mattress is Pookie's "quiet space" with her going to her crate if necessary while he's on there.  Just to get it through to her to  leave him alone while he's there.

we love you, Ronda, and take a happy pill and calm down so you don't stress pookie out. ;)

Badger we are so sorry that you have to have another surgery.  I bet you will get a lot of extra treats during the next few week, just use those great eyes you have and Mom will give you anything you want.

Speaking as a charter member of the Paranoid Pupper Mama Club, you are not being dramatic. It is scary stuff when they have to go under. I was convinced Sadie would die while being spayed!  ;)

My Golden had TPLO surgery last year to repair his ACL and the vet told us that usually they need that surgery on the other side at some point. It's something to do with putting added strain on the healthy leg while the injured one is healing. At any rate, we went through that surgery and it wasn't any fun at all. Bailey was a total trooper but it was awful seeing him like that. He's fine now though, you'd never know he'd ever had a bad leg.

The tricky part for us was keeping our other dog from LOSING HIS MIND while Bailey was recovering. They've been together since they were a few months old. Attached at the hip doesn't even begin to cover it. We ended up using the crate again to keep Bailey quiet and safely away from Rocky while he was healing. It was a little tough for a couple of months keeping them both quiet, but our other dog sensed something wasn't right which made it easier than we had anticipated.

Poor Nana Pookie, hope he's feeling better really soon! :)

awwwwwww poor Nana Pookie! I am sorry to hear the big guy needs surgery next month! I am SURE his new "Pookie Only" bed will help with his recovery! Poor little guy.  I love how a regular doggie bed just wasn't good enough for Badger and only the best twin bed would do!  As everyone else stated, you are not a drama queen, you are Badgers mom.
: Re: Sad news...Badger needs another surgery :(
: doggylover July 20, 2006, 05:25:48 PM
I was having a really hard time with the crate thing.  We have always had it in the house, then we moved it out to the garage (because it is monstrous) but Badger LOVES his crate...he has always loved that crate.  I've planned on bringing it back in, then with the puppy, last time it went out to the garage (for company that was coming over)it stayed out there for days.  Now DH doesn't want it back in because he thinks it is a demotion to have a crate (because fo puppy) in spite of Badger loving it.
So the twin mattress (the most comfy bed in this entire house)is a compromise.  At least it is a place where he can go to get away from puppy teeth.
As it turns out, he LOVES the new arrangement.  He lords it over Gossy that he gets to go up there and she doesn't.  He dangles toys off the side, then when she comes running to play, he pulls them up onto the King Bed, and I swear he 'smiles' at her.

I lost track of the point of my last post.  So I'm thinking the bed will be a great, comforting place for Badger to recuperate after this much dreaded surgery.
