I love Epi-Otic!
I may burn a little if there is open wounds.
And SHOULD NOT be used if the ear drum is ruptured!!!
It is toxic to the brain.

would aspirin help?  as per "dog dosages" search, Buffered Asprin -- 5mg/lb, every 12 hrs.

Hi all I had to cover a few extra shifts( lot's of co-workers getting sick) I do not think an asprin should be given until seen by the Vet. Asprin is a blood thinner! the skin in the ears bleed very easy when irritated and inflamed let's not make it worse! Also it is not true to dose a giant breed dog as a human or a med - large breed for medications.Gi ant breeds have a lower tolerance for some medications than others. Give only what a DVM perscribes after they physically see your pets!

Sorry to hear!!!
Your choices are clear either take her to a new vet who is more that willing to treat her anytime good or bad or,allow the sores and canal to become so enlarged that she looses her hearing. Surgery may be needed to cut away the the base of the canal to try to restore the hearing and ease the pain from the infection.

The only medication that works is the ones from the Vets! Trust me nothing at the pet stores work. Those ears need to be looked at first and tested to know what you are dealing with.

Getting knocked over like a bowling pin is all in a days work! I know!! I love the challenge!! Once the problem is fixed the pain will be gone and cleaning the ears should become a snap.

Good luck

Good guestions!
No you should not worry about the smell right now some medications stink!!

Now For the ear cleaner do what I do, I always have one in use and another in the doggie box. If I could I would buy stock in this stuff. I like to use epiotic. If your in a pinch you can use a vinegar solution this is used when the ear canal can not be seen and or a large amount of discharge. It breaks it up well.  please use only 5% vinegar dilute 4 parts warm water to 1 part vinegar. fill the canal and rubb the base of the ear to hear a suction.

Now the medicine should be placed in the ear as far down as you can get it in. This should be done after the ear is cleaned and all the head shacking is done. You can also place a thin layer on the inside of the pinna (ear flap) The medicine will get there as well. **** ONE very important thing if any long hair is around the base of the ear such as a dog wth long hair...BRUSH!!!!!!!! The medication will cause the hair to knott up and become a huge ball and possibly a hotspot!!

All topical medications or medicine that is placed on the skin or in the ear MUST come in contact with the skin to work. If there is lots of yellow creamy or blackish brownish stuff then clean those ears.

Do go back after two weeks for a recheck! Even if it was not scheduled. Have the doctor look in the ears again to see if there has been good progress other medications may be needed.

I have had to do Special how to classes for our clients. It's ok, cleaning ears is not an easy task but if done right the dogs love it and smash their head right in to you instead of WWF and the Rodeo!

Ok these are this things I like to reply to!!!
All ear cananls of dogs are hot their normal body temperture is 100.0-102.5 degrees. With that said the paws and ears are the places where they release their heat to stay cool.

Now in general dogs with ears that stand up and have no hair on them seldom get ear infections. However once one develops and not treated correctly and a routine to clean the ears is not started then you will have problems.

Now for  dogs with flopy ears!! Beacuse the canals are hot and ears develop wax it becomes moist and things grow. The most common ear infections in dogs and cats are either a yeast or bacterial overgroth. For the most part they do not get inner ear infections like us people. Their disconfort comes from being itchy and well.... ever had a yest infection??? That is how it feels.

I have seen pups as young as 5weeks have an infection. The key is to always smell the ears there should never be an odor. Always look at the ear it should never be RED pink is ok but not bright. Touch the ear it should never be painful. If any ONE if these are going on see your VET they can take a sample of the wax or discharge and determine if it is yeast or bacteria then get started on the right meds. 2-4 weeks or longer to clear up an infection is to be expected.

Now this is going to vary depending on each situation. Some treatment will include a deep cleaning with sedation or anesthesia if it is severe. If this is needed most Vets will wait until severe swelling goes down and the canal is open. Then at home you use antibiotics. Some vets send home an ear cleaner if they can see the ear drum and the canal is not shut from sweling.

Using a good ear cleaner with a drying agent in it is best! They clean the ear and dry up any remains. There are one and two step ear cleaners available your vet will be the best to figure out which to use. NEVER put q-tips in the ear! I have seen them get stuck and rip an ear drum!

If your dog swims or plays in the water or gets a bath often they can get infections as well. Using a good ear cleaner will help prevent this.

I am going to try to put a video together showing how to clean the ears. There is a right way and a wrong way.

Well sorry for the long reply I hope it helped. Feel free to ask away.

Ok for those of you who are in the Northern California area on 2/24/07 in San Jose the NCNC (Northern California Newfoundland Club) is holding the 2nd class of the year!

I really enjoyed the 1st class last month and looking foward to this one as well.

This class is open to all Breeds! The class is geared for ALL levels, we are beginers! I just wanted to spread the word.

Here is the link to the flyer it is a pdf file.

http://www.ncnc.org/pdfs/CartSem_2-07.pdf

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat reader go to the main page and click on links to get adobe acrobat reader.
The main website is:

http://www.ncnc.org/

There is a fee for the class to learn to train and you can bring as many dogs plus there is a discount for the second person learning in your group. If you want to bring the family they will provide lunch for them as well for an extra $5 per person.
The exact location will be emailed to you with directions once the application is received.

There will also be a table with tons of Newfie things for sale! Calendar's, pens, stickers, car decals, tee-shirts,pillows, blankets and of course the harnesses! All of the money raised goes towards the Newfoundland Health and Rescue, Inc. There mission is to find homes for displaced purebred Newfoundlands. However they seem to find the neglected ones who need lots of work.

So if your interested in starting a new sport with your K9 this is your place.

We will be there and hope to see some of you there too.

Thanks for all of the great words!

Here is to answer the questions.

1. I am a member of the NCNC-Northern California www.ncnc.org  -Newfoundland Club and they have a wonderful woman hand  make all of the harnesses! She has the Spec's for all breeds. Plus at the class we were able to try on and buy if we liked!
Copa is in a XL size which fits him perfect BUT he is only a 1 yr old and will fill out to a XXL which thye make! there were Saint's there they also fit in to the Xl and XXL they really need to be tried-on first! There was a Rottie, Frech Bulldog, Husky, Malamute and very different sized Saint's and Newfies!

2. I learned that I know NOTHING! I trained my rottie but for carting you need the same respect and control as a working horse. And I gained it in 20 minutes!!! My boy liked to walk fast and circle around once in a while and sit when he felt like it. Well by only walking and changing direction by saying the direction he figured out that he needs to follow my body movement Not what he wants.
We did need to find command words for walk, stop, left, right, slow down, get the harness on and off. We are still working on it. Once we were doing it he never pulled and the walks we  take are so much better now!

If you can not find a local club think about making a weekend  out of it. there was two families from over 8 hours away that made the trip beacuse they could not find any thing in southern California for them!

All of the dogs did great. The instructors were Awesome! When there was a dog that was spooked they calmed it down and kept it going and shared lot's of stories of how several of the Chanpion titled dogs started training... they flipped the carts, did aligator rolls and screemed! This made me feel much better.
There is another class in March and a Test in April  here in N. California at Garin Regoinal Park in Hayward.

If you need to find more info check out your local training clubs or the AKC website there is a link to all of the clubs Also the Newfoundland Club of America has links in the US and Canada for clubs.

All you need is the basics and you practice at home with out the cart.
Good luck all!!!!

Big Dogs with Jobs / 1st Draft/Carting class Pictures! Copa the Newfie!

 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I am so proud of Copa! He did great, today was his first class and first time around 20 dogs all at one time. He did great! Getting him dressed was not as bad as I thought it would be. If you could believe it, not one of the other dogs distracted him! He did get a little spooked when a strange guy was following him pretending to be a cart. He did get over it and did great!By the end of the afternoon we were so excited that we forgot to take pictures of him pulling the cart for the first time :'(
I hope you enjoy the pictures and I cant believe my baby is going to be one already! :D

Please use a Soap Free shampoo!!!! With all soap free shampoo's  you can wash as often as needed! The Soap creates flakes and itchy skin.  I use Plum silky by Nature's Specialties www.naturespec ialties.com  once every 4 weeks and to clean up the little messes I use Earthbath puppy. www.earthbath. com
Remember if you use a topical flea/tick control all shampoo's with soap will wash them off.
One more thing BRUSH well all the time and right before a bath! This helps with less hair all over your arms and down the drain!

Hey all!

The chip was an AVID and they were quick to answer the questions at 1am!! That says a lot!

Our scanner will scan all chips and give number's to call. It's really cool!

You need the chip number to get information!!! No one can get specific information like, addresses of all of the pit bulls chipped or Where all the Rotties live either.

We see every thing under the sun at my work, it’s a large two hospital  Veterinary Emergency Clinic. Us as Tech’s are always preparing for the worst, Murphy’s Law is quoted quite often on the floor but last night was a shocker!!

This hyper and adorable 20week old Doberman came in because he was hit by a car. After the X-rays were taken we could see a small fracture and the heart and lungs and a Microchip.  All of these are normal to see on a X-ray of a puppy who was hit by a car. So the Doctor goes into the room and shares the findings with the owner and she tells them  the only problem we see is the broken leg and she starts to point out everything the X-ray provided an image of including the microchip, The owner said “the what?”
The doctor said “the microchip, do you know what it is for?"
They had no clue and it was then discovered that they just bought the puppy 2 weeks ago and did not get any papers or anything for it from guy in the newspaper.

We scanned the puppy and called the company at 1:15am!!!!! They were open!!!!! :o We found out that this puppy had a different name and owner. So at 1:30am our Doctor calls the owner from the numbers provided by the microchip company.  When we heard her ask for the owner named on the account then asked if they had a Doberman puppy and finding out that it was stolen one month ago made our mouths drop and sent chills up our spines!!!! They lived 2 miles from the  hospital and 4 miles from the family who “adopted the puppy”.  How crazy is this????? To make a long story short a police report was filed and an investigation is opened.

This puppy was stolen from an enclosed patio  in a fenced yard!!!!

After this I had my work order Microchips for my whole family and I will be telling EVERYONE I know to use it!!!

We are also going to change our protocol at work and scan every animal that comes in where as before we would only scan stray animals.

So please be safe!!!!  I will now!!!!
