Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Liability Insurance rider, large dog, anyone have one?

I may soon be in the position of having to care for a beautiful American Staff Terrier that belongs to an ill relative. I would not willingly have the dog because he is too big and powerful for me. He is a very loving dog, not at all like the way they are portrayed. He has proven it by playing with toddlers and young children with NO PROBLEMS. I now know for certain that the owner determines the nature of even these dogs.
I do not wish to have the dog euthanized, but I am worried about the insurance aspect. Does anyone have a supplemental policy and is it expensive? Details would be greatly appreciated. I do not wish to have to turn the dog over to the MSPCA but will have NO choice if I cannot cover my but.
