Newfoundland Pictures / annabelle our rescue newf at the river again
« on: July 26, 2008, 08:56:21 am »
Just a picture to update on our great success story
We have had Annabelle for seven weeks now. It seems forever. She has passed the first part of her dog training classes. She now sits, stays, drops, heels, recalls and does off lead quite well. We are very proud of her. She has gained weight and feels about the right body weight now. She seems to have lost her timidity and shyness. No more toileting mistakes. And is back to what we expect of a newf, making friends with everyone. We have done a litle retrieving and she will now hold items in her mouth. I think she was told off for this, because initially she would not put anything in her mouth ???
ANDthe dogs stayed home for the first time( since we have owned Annabelle) inside alone, whilst we went to the movies. And the house survived, a whole five hours;D

 :D ;D ;) :o ;D :D ;) :o

Newfoundland Discussions / need to gain weight
« on: July 08, 2008, 04:25:13 am »
Annabelle our new newf rescue has been with us for five weeks now. She is quite lean :o...........Yo u can feel every spinal process and every rib.Her coat looks great after we washed and groomed her, She weighed in at 85lbs when we got her and i think that she need to be about 110lbs. She eats like a horse, three meals a day at present and has ofcourse been wormed. She does not tolerate canned or dry food. They give her diarhoea. So we cook rice/pasta with veg and chicken mince. And she get raw mince and chicken necks plus vitamins and supplements. She is eating about three times the amount Zack, atavar, ate and twice the amount my previous newf bitch, Abbey, ate. And she weighed 135lbs :-\
The only difference is that she is very lively and has a border collie X golden retriever as her playmate. I do not want a fat lazy dog, but I would love to put some more muscle on her. Does anyone have any special ideas. She loves porridge and has that for breakfast. And she also loves big marrow beef bones, which gets frequently. Thanks ;D

Newfoundland Discussions / New to newf site
« on: June 23, 2008, 05:40:34 am »
Hi Everyone, new to this site and just looking in to the newf part. I am the proud new owner of a rescue newf called Annabelle. She is such a darling. And she is the new companion of our Border CollieXGolden retriever Tessa My and Australian Kelpie Nugget. We had just recently lost our beloved Rescue Newf Zack and the Newf rescue people sent us a picture of Annabele, see attached. She looked soooo sad :-[ And had been looking for a home for 3-4 months. So we drove the 600kms and picked her up. She was out of control and quite scared of my hubby, but with a lot of love and some "tough love" she has become such a doll. We took her to a trainer this weekend to test her for aggression, as she barks at all men. But he says she is just worried, very shy and not aggresive. Even when he pushed towards her and with his amazing one hour training session, made her a lot more confident and she was great with him and his male friend, whom he asked to approach her.He has shown us some methods and we are now going for weekly sessions. :)She will be socialized with people and dogs. She adores kids and is good with horses and dogs. Someone has been very hard on this dog. She is thin, weighing 39kgs, she will be about 50 when we have her up to weight. She is just the most cuddly dog. Just nuzzles in to you and she is lying on my feet right now.How can people do these things to dogs.
Tessa adores her, as she was missing her mate Zack so much. We still miss him so much. He had his third stroke and had to be put down. He is my atavar, in memory of a great friend. He also had a sad life before we took him in.
I love newfs and wil always be owned by a newf. Tessa looks like a mini newf. And Nugget is our work dog, now retired.I hope to learn from and enjoy this site ;)

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / new to forum from Australia
« on: June 20, 2008, 06:08:46 am »
Hello Everyone, I am new to this site.
I live in Australia and I just love dogs, especially Newfoundlands. I have just recently aquired our special second had Newf, Annabelle. She is now a good friend of our Golden retiever cross Bordercollie and our very old Australian Kelpie Nugget. Sadly our beloved Newf Zack had a stroke and had to be put down. But he will be at rainbow bridge with all our other Newfs and beloved cross breeds.
We take on sad cases......... ...Annabelle has been with us for three weeks and she was totally out of control after being in a kennel for 3-4 months. But she has settled in well. And with firm persistence and a lot of love she is now quite a lady. She is lying at my feet right now, snoring. Tessa is a very clever dog and does lots of tricks. She smiles  :), grins ;D and says hello on command. Nugget is our retirde workdog. He is deaf and has some vision problems
We are also into horses. Love Quarter horses and Clydesdales.
We have seven horses and three dogs to keep us busy and happy. I am looking forward to communicating with some like minded people, cheers ;)
