: Most Unique Personality Trait...
: doggylover May 27, 2006, 01:37:30 PM
Badger's most odd/unique personality trait is that he is a massochist.  I'm not sure I can really describe it, because it's part of his entire personality, but I will give an example.  He will push his ball into the dining room (where he isn't allowed) and lay there for HOURS panting and whining.  He gets visibly upset if you give him his ball back, and he immediately pushes it back in there.  It is obvious by his body language that he doesn't want us interfering in his game.  He isn't playing a game to see if we will go get it, he likes it the best if he can't get the ball, and he just has to lay there and look at it.
What is the most distinctive/unique/odd thing you have ever noticed in a dog you've had?  The dog can be alive or at the rainbow bridge!  I just thought it would be fun to hear about other people's weirdo dogs!!!

Cinder is an optimist.  She reminds me of Dori off Finding Nemo.  She has the same up personality but her song would be Just Keep Running.  She's a big dufus but you can't help smiling when you see her do stuff.

Kaila has a high pain tolerance.  She injures herself and keeps right on going.  I have yet to hear her yelp and when she had pano and the vet was squeezing on her legs she didn't pull, jump, or whine.  She is also a klutz.

ROFL I was just reading your post and remembering an obscure book I read 10 or so years ago called, 'Geek Love'.  It's about a family of circus freeks, written by a relatively normal onlooker.  OMG that is SO funny!  Your dogs sound like a total hoot!

Lacey is definitely tweaked.  She loves to wiggle she literally wags her entire body and she's excited to see you if you've only been gone 5 secs.  She also loves to rub against you and she tries to crawl into you.  She also loves to herd anything and everything including us and especially other cars on the road.

Kali is a big goofy slobbery beast.  She loves to give kisses and can be shy strangely enough.  She's learned how to herd from Lacey which is highly entertaining and can move pretty quick.  But she can be such a klutz.  She runs into the wall while chasing her tail and crashes cause she loses traction and generally has no idea how big she is.  She also is a chatterbox, she loves to talk and especially to tell you off.

Sammy was our irish setter let me say her reg name was Lady Samantha of Emerald Isle and a lady she was.  She ruled the house, she had her own chair at the dinner table that she would sit at.  Also she believed she had puppies either the rubber crabs or Taz that she would obsess over.  She was quite the mother hen as whenever the baby chinchillas would go missing she'd go find them for us.  She also was obsessed over catching these white rabbits that escaped from our neighbor...unf ortunately she was on a run and the rabbit had no such restrictions so she'd hit the end and flip herself over or tear the run out of the house.  Poor Sam she never caught any...I could go on and on about her as she was alot like Farley always into trouble.

Mackey was our retired greyhound.  She loved to sleep on the couch all the time.  We used to joke that she'd fallen off the greyhound bus as she'd sleep upside down with all her legs outstretched.  She got senile in her old age and would forget things like the fact she had just been out.  She was an awesome dog though good with everyone.

This is such a cool thread!!!

I just wanted to add that, but I can't really think of anything Cabeza does that's funny or odd. He's really really really really really really really mellow. He mostly just chills.

hahaha...but, my American bully X, Bo, used to eat sand at the beach. Like, tons of it. And then he'd poop it out. Literally. It would be all sand. Mark (BF) used to say, "Nicole. Your dog is pooping sand castles again!" hahaha!

This is so funny!

Let's see....Bear is a happy-go-lucky, dimwitted, snob.  ;D And yes I do mean that lovingly. He is always happy and loves to wiggle waggle his booty all over the place when someone comes in or he is outside or when he carries his leash. He is a bit dimwitted because he is always hitting something with his big head. He regularly runs into poles and trees and sometimes even vehicles with his noggin when he is not paying attention. Lastly, he is a snob. If he doesn't think that a human or animal is worthy of his time he will completly ignore them. He is a wierdo but I love him!

A dog with a foot fetish...that is hysterical!!!  These are the things I think we remember the most about our dogs long after they are gone.

I love this thread. Instead of a foot fetish, Luke has a pillow fetish. He loves to jump on our couch or the spare room bed and wiggle and squirm, getting his head under the pillows and flipping them up and eventually off. He snorts and makes all these goofy noises! Every day he does this, usually in the morning. Anyone else have a wiggle worm?

Besides his foot fetish, Samson also lays down with his head on the floor & just grumbles on & on for no apparent reason...I always reply to this with "OH MY!...Something is wrong in Sammy's world"! :D

lolol poor Gweck!  He just wanted to sleep in the bed!  When we first moved into our last house, we knew we would only be there for as short a time as possible, and we didn't unpack anything (we were renting and looking for another house).
We were sleeping on a matress on the floor and Badger decided that it was HIS floor so the 'bed' was fair game.  He would start at the foot of the bed and, after we were asleep, he would crawl up the bed between us.  We totally knew he was doing it, but we ignored him hoping he would settle in and try to be quiet so as not to 'wake' us.  So crawl crawl up he would come.  This would take around 30 minutes or so, he moved like a slug.  Then, he would lay there, very still like he was dead.  Then he must have figured we were asleep, so he would flop all out.  Most nights he was still and quiet, but sometimes he would decide in mid dream that David had to GO.  He would shove David really hard off onto the floor, with all four legs.  David got sick of it and made him sleep on the floor and it would all start up again.
When we made him sleep on the floor, he would pout for HOURS.  Huffing and sighing and whining, then running around barking like there was an intruder.  Of course if we got up to check if anyone was there, he would be in the bed when we got back.
I love this dog...

Earnest's quirk is that he loves big machines. Like track hoes and bulldozers. I've never seen a dog so fascinated. If he hears a machine anywhere in our neighborhood, he'll wag at the door begging for a walk- "let's go see!" This from a dog who at any other time says "walk? now? but Lassie's on TV- aren't we going to eat popcorn?".
Once he lied to me, jumping up and down doing the potty dance by the door at an odd time of night. I took him out in the front yard, and he stood still staring off down the street. I had no idea what was up until the flashing lights started coming up over the hill- he didn't have to go potty- the big street cleaning machines were coming! That's a part of our routine now, he hears them coming and instead of "lying" he has a particular ears cocked, questioning expression that means "can I watch them clean the road, please?" If we've already gone to bed he parks his chin on the windowsill and stares from there.
They're building a new house behind the house next door, facing the next street over. A dream come true! Earnest hasn't barked to come inside in weeks, he won't come in until the construction workers go home. When they brought in the big crane to hang the roof joists he went nuts with excitement, running around the yard and tossing toys in the air, then he settled down on TOP of the dog house to get the best view, and watched all day long. If we should encounter a parked machine anywhere we MUST sniff it all over, and examine the cab- I swear he's just like a five-year old skin kid, wishing he could drive the thing!

The first is Osiris.  If you are sitting on the couch, he will rub by you like a cat.  He will then lift his back leg up and attempt to strattle your leg.  His main goal is to have his groin resting on your leg.  He dosent want you to move or anything, but he'll just stand there with his groin on your knee hahaha.

Ranger does this too.  This is known as "putting his winkie on you".  Ranger's most unique personality trait is that he is just a huge freak.  Between the winkie-putting, wiping his face on the couch, grunting like a pig to communicate, hiding his face under your arm, constantly having to have his belly rubbed, trying to trade toys for food, and on-his-back-like-a-person in-the-bed cuddle time, he is just plain weird.  Sometimes we think he isn't really a dog at all.  He is a space alien, like Stitch from the movie Lilo & Stitch, posing as a dog.  Remember, the part when Stitch would roll up into a ball, like a pill bug, and roll around the house? Ranger does this.  No lie. He chases his tail, then when he catches it, he holds it in his mouth and falls over on his side, curled into a ball, holding his tail and rolling.  We are reasonably convinced that sometimes, at night, he flies.

This is so much fun!!  I was giggling over every single one of the weird traits of our pals!

Our first Newf was completely bizarre!  When he was tiny, (until about 6 months) he refused to go for a walk....would NOT leave the yard. Once he got brave enought to go out, we could walk for miles as long as I didn't try to make him turn  left.  We could turn right, no problem; but if there was a left turn in our plans, he'd just sit down and refuse to move!!!  We spent more time spinning down the road with only right turns!!!

rofl lololol that is sooooo cute.  This thread is bringing back so many memories.  When Badger was a pup, I would take him for a walk, and he would just lay down for a nap like a mile from home.  He was like 50 pounds (I had never had a big dog before and didn't know not to walk that far)and I would have to heft him all the way home.  Oddly, if I shortened the trip, he would lay down and refuse to move a ways from home, I think he came to like me carrying him.

I order most of my purchases online. Everytime I get something Dozer has to see what it is. He remembers Rawhide  treats coming in the mail. He absolutely hates large bubble wrap. One time I was unpacking something and threw the bubble wrap on the floor. Dozer stepped on it and it popped at him. That was all it took. He started biting it and tearing it to schreds. The more he bit it and stepped on it the more it would pop and the madder he got. I couldn't stop laughing  :D  So now it's a game. I think he loves to hate bubble wrap.

Sadie is the stranger of my two, I think.

First off, she has a thing for laundry. If there are socks, shirts, whatever on the ground, she will go around collecting them. It sounds fairly normal for a retriever, except for the fact that if we're at someone else's door talking and she looks in and sees laundry to collect, she will go in and pick it all up. It's like she's on a mission: No junk on the floor as long as she's around.

She also loves to rub her head in things that smell like me. If I put my towel down on the bed after taking a shower, she will immediately jump up on the bed and roll her face in it until she falls over. Then she rolls around on her back like a madwoman, snorting and shoving her head into the towel as hard as she can.

She loves showering with me and loves being dried just as much as getting wet. You can see her get sad if she jumps out of the shower before I'm ready and no one is there to dry her.

She also has a thing for stuffed bears. I don't know how she knows they are bears, but she thinks that they are her babies. Every now and then, she'll "adopt" a stuffed duck or hedgehog, but for the most part, her little brood is a bear-only group.

Sadie doesn't like her leash dragging around either. If for some reason it is still on and no one is holding the other end, she will carefully fold it up in her mouth and carry it around, instead of letting it drag around behind her.

Riley likes to grumble to talk. He also likes to cuddle-like fully spoon a person. He will lay with one front arm over your neck and a back leg over your legs, like a person would spoon someone. He thinks he can "talk" to thunder, too. And he has to sit before you can put his gentle leader on. He gets kind of annoyed if you don't let him sit down and pose first.

Sadie used to do this when I first got her. She'd get about a half mile or so from home, which isn't far for a lab, but I have a feeling no one walked her much before. Anyway, we'd think she had to go to the bathroom or something, and she'd go off into the grass, find a tree, and lay down in the shade. After the first time she'd lay down, she'd try at least 3 other times for the rest of that walk home. It was a very slow process...

Teddy is still a puppy so we are discovering new personality traits every day!  LOL!  But one thing I noticed that makes me laugh is that when he catches our cats (which is suprisingly often - I think they like it) he will hold them down with one big paw and lick/slobber them.  I've noticed him do it with little dogs too.  He desn't hurt them, just holds them in place until he's done wiping his slobbers on them.   ;D

Hi there! I am new to the boards, have a rottie that is 115 pounds and a papillon, they play great together, but I found this thread fun! Thought I would join in!

Zeus, my rottie, is the biggest "human" dog! When we have company over, usually people we don't normally have over, he will wait til I have them take a seat and he will stare, then slowly walk past them, back up and put his butt on their legs, as if he is sitting in their lap with front legs on the floor!  :o

ANother thing he loves to do is back his butt to you and push. He knows this annoys my best friend, so he does it every single time she comes over and then stares at me, as to say heheh i did it again!  They are so funny in their own personallities!
Love your stories and pictures! Glad I found these boards! ;D

All the dogs know that the bathtub equals water, so they will stand there when they are thirsty.  I sure do have some odd dogs :)

Zoey used to do the same thing, lol  :D When she was a puppy we limited her water intake during potty training. When there was no water in her bowl, we would know she was really thirsty if we found her in the tub licking the drain hoping water would come out of it :D

I forgot to bring up the funny habit of my Newf girl, Lucille.  I loved to take her shopping because she would INSIST on carrying my purse.  We'd go in to a store and she would happily wander around clothing stores but would get bored with Home Depot or any "non-girly" stores and take my purse and try  to leave.  She wouldn't pay any attention to anybody who tried  to pet her or talk to her;  she was on a mission!!! ;D ;D ;D

This thread is soooo hilarious!!!  I just keep picturing all of these nutty animals with their crazy habits! :D :D
I also am just beginning to see some of Bella's traits.  New ones pop up everyday!
The latest was last week when I went to the store and picked up some of those already sliced apples at Walmart.  I had read that apples are good for dogs, so I gave her a slice.  She didn't know what to do with it, so she kept dropping it and then picking it up again.  Finally, she put her head down on it and began rubbing the side of her head all over it!  I guess she just wanted to smell like it!! :D :D
Also, I had to include my cat, Mojo.  When any of my friends stay over, they usually sleep on the couch.  Sometime around 7am in the morning, Mojo likes to curl up by their head.  Then he proceeds to begin chewing and eating their hair!!  Some wear hair products, but some don't, so I don't know what it is he likes about eating their hair! :D :D

The no-left-turns newf is funny, I've never heard of anything like that.

Our past 2 doggies:
Casie (Shetland Sheepdog) Our routine every night when it was time to go to bed he would come up to the bed beside me and shove his head under the cover, and I'd pet his head and wiggle the cover over him.  He would help me put on my socks every morning, and Bury his head into the bed.  He would grunt and grumble a lot when he did it.. it was cute.

Zima (Labrador Retriever) - She would do the slowly crawl and inch forward on the bed also.  Or jump up and not move one inch.  Also, She would jump up on my outstretched arm and rest her front feet on my arm and kinda perch there if I told her "up".

Current pups:

Bava will lay down somewhere , in the water , while we're walking, in the back seat of the car, etc, and refuse to move no matter what.  He will pounce on the couch like a fox looking for mice in the snow if you scratch the coushin, it looks hillarious to see such a big dog do that.

Mowglie wags his tail in a circular motion, like a helicopter, and has one tooth that hangs out from his underbite.

Sophie is the most vocal wookie sounding dog I have ever encountered, she will tell you alllll about it if she is not happy about something.

That wins the cute award!  One thing though, I've always been curious...are Newfs not just a little er snobbish anyway?  I am in LOVE with them, but whenever I see them out and about, they always act like I'm not worthy of pets or something.  Most dogs ADORE ME.  After being around a Newf, I always end up feeling like I'm back in Jr. high, totally uncool.  Please tell me this is a Newfy thing....
