General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: dog bed

Well, now I feel my Jillian is really spoiled - we bought her a Simmons Beauty Rest for dogs and built a frame, headboard and footboard :P

The cover zips off for easy cleaning and the mattress itself has a waterproof covering.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: My Newf won't get in the pool

A ski belt - what a great idea!  Of all the things I've tried, I've never thought of that.  While Jillian loves to play in the water, she's terrified to actually go out and swim - we didn't get her as a young pup so we don't know if she was traumatized as a pup or not.  I'll have to give that a try!!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Canidae dog food

It's surely been a big debate about whether it is ok to feed raw and kibble, whether at the same time or not.  I have not heard of anyone, despite all I have read to contradict such, that has had a problem feeding both at the same time (raw mixed with kibble) or a meal of each per day.

The arguments I've heard are that raw food digests faster and causes upset by leaving kibble in the stomach and the age old don't mix because you will cause a nutritional imbalace.

I did rescue a great pyrenese a couple years ago and she did best with a mixture of kibble and raw.  If she got just one or the other she would have very soft, runny stools.    The Akita I fostered ate mostly kibble and got raw meat once in a while - no problem there, either.  The Great Dane has also done well with a combination.

I suppose it depends upon the dog.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Innova Evo for Puppies?
« on: August 15, 2005, 11:13:25 am »
If you contact Innova directly, they will advise you not to feed Evo to large or giant breed puppies  Yes, the protein is too high, according to Innova.

Evo does have carbs (potato), just no grains and is far lower in carbohydrates than any other commercial dog food.  The intent of Evo appears to be to feed our dogs a diet closer to what nature intended without having to feed raw.  Evo is not a raw food but at least provides a more species appropriate diet in a convenient kibble form.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the protein count but I am very happy to see a food that doesn't contain grains and happy to see a dog food company make the effort to create a more species appropriate diet.  I'm sure other companies will follow their lead.
