: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: Rocky's 'Rents September 22, 2005, 11:05:19 AM
I am heartbroken. I did a really stupid thing and although I deserve it please don't yell- I'm mad enough at myself. I'm starting this thread mostly to educate because I made a big mistake.  Monday night sometime during the night Rocky found a baggie w/ Ibuprophen in it and ate some. I wasn't sure how much was in there but I didn't think it was that much. He seemed ok and I knew that if a human took what I thought he might have gotten (8-10 200mg tabs) that they would be ok. Well last night he urinated 2 times in our room (he never pees in the house) and he was soooo thirsty. He had 2 more accidents so when I came home from work I thought maybe he had a bladder infection(forgetting about him eating the IB) Well after I talked the vet into letting my dad pick up an antibiotic for me tomorrow and I started to remember -- To make a long story short. Rocky is in an emergency hospital for IV fluids and monitoring. His kidney values were elevated. I had called the Pet Poison hotline for help. This may cost up to $2000 and money is not the issue, my stupidity for waiting has cost much more. The vet thinks that the damage should reverse itself but I wanted to warn everyone how dangerous ibuprophen is to pets, they can't metabolize it like humans. (long term abuse in humans does cause damage also)  Please pray for Rocky :'(

I am sending prayers for Rocky!...I hope so much that he'll be o.k....Don't be too hard on yourself...You are not the first person that found out the hard way the dangers of Ibupropen with dogs....The only thing that is safe for a dog where that sort of thing is concerned is children's asprin. (correct me if I'm wrong people) Please please let us know how Rocky is as soon as you know more.

:(  Prayers and thoughts will be sent your and Rocky's way.  Please don't beat yourself up - it was a mistake but not done on purpose.

Look how much you love him, enough to post this and warn others too.  I hadn't heard about ib being bad for dogs either.  It could have been one of us writing this instead of you.

Poor Rocky! It is great to hear that the damage can be reversed though. This mistake could happen to anyone so please don't beat yourself up.

If it makes you feel better- I did something totally stupid the other night too. When Nicks & I went out to "work" I put the key to the house in my food pouch since I had no pockets. Well, I forgot about the key and at dinner time emptied the bag of treats into Bear's food. About 3 minutes later he was throwing up all of his food and I didn't know why...until I saw the key in the middle of the puke. Luckily he got it out but I was so mad at myself for being so dumb!  ::)

Oh No!!  I'm sooo sorry to hear about poor Rocky!  I will say prayers that his kidneys do recover and all is well...please post updates!  Please don't beat yourself up.... & don't be too hard on your self.  We all do things that we regret.....

I left a bottle of Rimadyl on the counter and Miko (Rainbow Bridge '04) counter surf'd and got it & ate the cap off & half of the tablets in the bottle (it was the chewable kind)....luckily I discovered what had happened very soon afterward, called the vet for advice & was told to give him Peroxide - teaspoon by teaspoon until he threw up the stuff and had nothing left in his poor tummy to vomit...then watch closely....I had to dose Chessie, Dona (Rainbow Bridge '05) & Miko with the stuff 'cause I wasn't sure if they, too, had gotten into it after Miko broke the bottle open....it was NOT fun cleaning up after them!!!  It was NOT fun being scared to death that I was going to loose all 3 animals because of being careless!!  Miko was the only one with the med in his vomit.....poor Dona threw up so much that she had to get IV fluids.  Chessie threw up so much that he tore the mucosal lining of his esophagus and had bloody emesis for several days & had to take sucralfate antacid.  Miko's labs were watched VERY carefully (Rimadyl can be toxic in Labs - my sister's lab died after taking it - but it is not always toxic - your vet needs to monitor the animal & their labs closely to make sure it's not harming them).....

....we all do things we regret....I'll be praying for you & Rocky!!
-Laurie

Laurie,
I read about what happened to Miko in an old thread yesterday when I was trying to find out if the IB caused a problem and it was one of the things that led me in the right direction.  Thats why this place is so great!!
Everyone - thanks for your prayers. I just called and he had a quiet night, won't eat or drink right now but he's getting iv's. they will do labs at 10am to see how it's going.

We're still waiting to hear from the Dr. I called this afternoon and they didn't really say anything. They have a routine where the Dr. updates you in the morning and the evening. He won't have labs until later tonight so I don't know if they are waiting until after to call or what. The waiting is excruciating :'(
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: newflvr September 23, 2005, 06:56:44 AM
Well, it's driving me nuts as well!!!  Can you go visit him?  Cowboy won't leave with ANYBODY else so everytime he has to go to the vet, I go in the back with him.  The clinic is just used to it by now....you could try.....
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: Rocky's 'Rents September 23, 2005, 07:30:59 AM
Unfortunately this is a pretty big vet hospital and they are pretty busy. I don't think they encourage visiting hours! Anyway, the vet just called and Rocky is doing pretty well. The labs they did earlier weren't to check his renal function so they won't know if his kidneys are improving until after they do the labs late tonight. On the positive side, he is eating and drinking and to me that's a good sign. Any time he isn't feeling well that's the first thing we notice, his appetite drops.  Fingers crossed----------------------
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: newflvr September 23, 2005, 08:00:59 AM
Fingers and paws crossed here too!  It does sound good that he feels well enough to eat and drink.
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: Rocky's 'Rents September 23, 2005, 08:56:00 PM
Morning update - his renal labs have improved a little and they are going to continue giving him fluids until no more improvement is seen or they return to normal.  His appetite is good and he is peeing alot. I want to go see him but I think that would only be good for me because he would get so wound up when he saw us and I don't want him getting all excited and pulling out his iv so I'm going to refrain.
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: Rocky's 'Rents September 23, 2005, 09:11:36 PM
They keep saying it is a "wait and see" kind of thing" but they are optimistic. He will need monitored for quite awhile even if the labs return to normal.
: Re: Rocky's turn for your prayers and good thoughts.
: newflvr September 23, 2005, 10:26:33 PM
Don't get mad, here, Rocky, but I do think you should go see him, if you can stand it.  Every time I've had a dog in the clinic for a long period of time, I go in grubby clothes and just sit on the floor with him for several hours every day.  I take him out for his pee-runs and hold him for minor procedures.  Here's the reason why.  All sorts of studies have shown that people and dogs have a real connection.  When petted and stroked by "his person", his blood pressure drops and breathing slows (and so will yours) ....all which aid in recovery.  My Newf, Cowboy, who cluster seizures has been in the emergency clinic more times than I can name is SO bonded to me and I'm convinced it is because of the time he's laid across my lap on the clinic floor.  Even the director of the clinic says that she now encourages pet lovers to visit their pets while being treated because they do so much better.   They don't have the feeling of being abandonded.  The secret is to ignore everything that is going on around you and just focus on Rocky.  I've become good friends will all the specialists and vet techs in the clinic and Cowboy gets the VERY best treatment!  (Cowboy was even asked to be the flower dog at his internist's wedding)

The story of Lucille, my female Newf brought this in to sharp focus.  She got ITP (immune mediated thrombocytopen ia) from her immunizations and had to go in to a speciality clinic for a blood transfusion.  They took her in to the back and said I could come get her later in the day.  When I went to get her, they said she wasn't well enough to leave and that I could get her the next day.  I called in the morning and said I could come visit for a short time, but she wasn't feeling very well.  When I saw her I was shocked.  Her front paw was swollen beyond belief and totally non-responsive to my being there.   What that showed me was that nobody was watching over her.   I called the emergency clinic from that clinic and begged them to take her in THAT DAY.  I put her lead on her and told the clinic that I was checking her out (over their most strongly stated objections) and took her to the ER.  She had pancreatitis, the vet had missed the vein while giving her an IV, had the beginnings of pneumonia, and her heart rate was WAY off!  I stayed with her while they treated her and got her stabilized and then visited her a couple of times a day for the three days she was being treated.  It was an AWFUL time but she did survive that round (she died two months later of complications of ITP).

From now on, I insist that if they are going to treat my dogs, I'm going to check!    I promise to be respectful and not interfere with their treatment of any other animal, but I'm going to watch over my dogs. In return, I'll be happy to pay their bill.

Well we went to see him and they brought him into one of the exam rooms to see us. He had the big collar on to keep him from chewing on his iv and he was happy to see us. He seemed alert and not anxious at all. The girl at the desk said they were all in love w/ him and all the techs want to take him home so he must be being a good boy ::) We only stayed a half hour because they had disconnected his iv while we were there. I really feel good that they were so accomadating and didn't try at all to discourage us from coming.  It makes me more confident about their clinic. My daughter is a vet tech and her vets highly recommended this hospital.  Note to self - be a vet in my next life and open an emergency hospital if I want to be very wealthy!!! Oh well - anything for my baby, even if I have to get another job!!! I am thinking about getting the Merc manual for dogs, does anyone have it? I'll never take anything lightly again!!!

That is WONDERFUL news.

I'm sure your vets have told you, but in case they have not, a dog can lose over 50% of kidney function and still create normal values.

If this were my dog I would consider doing research on diets that enhance and support kidney function, and also supplements for same.

You might contact Lew Olson, at Bnaturals.com.

She is a diet expert, and has some really great supps too.

I am so glad Rocky's home!  When Roxy spent 5 (very long and very expensive) nights at the Animal Emergency Center, it seemed like and eternity.  Roxy too, looked like a poodle; poor thing was shaved in the most random places and had patches of fur missing everywhere. We didn't care though; we knew it had to be done in order for her to make it through her ordeal.  Hopefully Rocky's fur will grow in a little faster than Roxy's did!

Hope everyone is doing well!

I am so soory to hear of your baby getting so sick.  You and yours are in my prayers and thoughts,  Don't beat yourself up. I thank God that you were told that there can be full recovery. I know that that dosen't help with your guilt.  But we all at times forget that the are so resorsful they will get into anything.  Again we ae praying for you.
