Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Fireworks Warning - They can kill your dogs
« on: December 30, 2005, 03:37:43 am »
Tonight, Dec 31, it the one year anniversary of the death of my old dog, a chow mix named Buddy Boy.  I left home before dark, Boy acted like it was time to go inside, but I gave him a treat and he seemed fine.

The jerk morons down the street were blasting off fireworks as soon as it got dark. My next door neighbors, who gave me Boy, came to look after him, but he was already gone. They called me, but I'm sure it was already too late.  Boy only got out three times in the six years I had him, and all three were because he got scared by fireworks. I found his remains a block away the next day.

The same jerks were cleaning up their back yard today, getting ready for tomorrow nights party.  But I'm ready this year. The Fire Marshall has already been contacted about their illegal fire pit.  I've got my camera ready, I'll take pictures and will file charges against them if they shoot anything off. Another neighbor owns the house where the party is being held, and I'm going to talk to them tomorrow.

But, this message is for all you BPOers, keep your dogs inside and safe tonight, and probably tomorrow night also. Some jerk somewhere will be shooting of fireworks, and I don't want anyone to suffer what I did last New Year.

Please, keep bumping this message all day today.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / I got a new Pyr for Christmas!
« on: December 27, 2005, 01:42:37 pm »
I got the greatest new Pry as a Christmas gift. He loves to snuggle and keep me warm, but he doesn't eat, bark, poop, chew, drool, shed, fight, push me out of bed, or counter surf.  I think I'll name him Matt.

Games & Jokes / Rules for Dogs

Rules For Dogs
(Shamlessly reposted from last summer)

1. Dogs are never permitted in the house. The dog stays outside in a
specially built wooden compartment named, for very good reason, the
doghouse.

2. Okay, the dog can enter the house, but only for short visits or if
his own house is under renovation.

3. Okay, the dog can stay in the house on a permanent basis, provided
his doghouse can be sold in a yard sale to a rookie dog owner.

4. Inside the house, the dog is not allowed to run free and is
confined to a comfortable but secure metal cage.

5. Okay, the cage becomes part of a two for one deal along with the
doghouse in the yard sale, and the dog can go wherever the h*ll he
pleases.

6. The dog is never allowed on the furniture.

7. Okay, the dog can get on the old furniture, but not the new
furniture.

8. Okay, the dog can get up on the new furniture until it looks like
the old furniture, and then we'll sell the whole darn works and buy
new furniture -- upon which the dog will most definitely not be allowed.

9. The dog never sleeps on the bed. Period.

10. Okay, the dog can sleep at the foot of the bed.

11. Okay, the dog can sleep alongside you, but he's not allowed under
the covers.

12. Okay, the dog can sleep under the covers, but not with his head
on the pillow.

13. Okay, the dog can sleep alongside you under the covers with his
head on the pillow, but if he snores or farts, he's got to leave the
room.

14. Okay, the dog can sleep and snore and fart and have nightmares in
bed, but he's not to come in and sleep on the couch in the TV room,
where I'm now sleeping. That's just not fair.

15. The dog never gets listed on the census questionnaire as "primary
resident" even if it's true.

Great Pyrenees Pictures / My newest foster
« on: December 14, 2005, 12:59:33 am »
I just realized I had not shared any pics of my newest foster, and I've had him for a month. This is Ranger. He's eight months old, weighs around 65 pounds, and is an absolutely wonderful crazy puppy. He's got spring loaded legs, and hops around like a frog. He and Kendra chase and chew on each other until they drop. He can even get Earl to play with him.

He did learn a hard lesson yesterday. First, if you drop your rawhide chip, Earl will get it. Second, if Earl gets your rawhide, don't try to get it back, you'll just get your butt kicked (and bitten, clawed, etc)

I wanted to pass the torch to a "black dog" person, rather that a BWD person, and if it's a guy, it's just that much better! SO here it goes!

Superman or Spiderman?

Xbox or PS2?

Mustang, Charger, or Camero? What year?

What's the best "guy type" gift you ever bought an girlfriend? Did she like it?

Is professional wrestling real?

What was your first pet?

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Pupdaddy returns
« on: November 23, 2005, 06:02:50 pm »
Sorry to be AWOL for so long. Lots going on in my life. Good things, busy, nothing bad. I didn't try to eat a card table and get my mouth wired shut.

Work, well, is work. I spent a week in Kauai, but after 3 days of work, I might as well not have gone!

Even on vacation, I couldn't leave dogs alone. The second picture is a dog I found 1/2 way up the Waimea  Canyon. People had be leaving him food and water. I shared a bag of Maui Onion Chips with him, but was having nothing to do with being rescued!

The last pics are my new foster, Ranger, and Kendra. He's only 7 months old, and a sweetheart. He had his "Big Snip" on Tuesday, but is doing fine. Today, he and Kendra did their Pippin imitation!

Family dog dies defending home from intruder

by Jordan Schrader, STAFF WRITER

published November 5, 2005 6:00 am

FAIRVIEW — Kenya, a 2-year-old Great Pyrenees, died doing what she had been trained to do.

The dog was guarding her home on Fairview’s Twin Creeks Road on Wednesday morning when an intruder shot her and mutilated her with a “samurai sword,” according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department. Eric Allan Davis, 20, of Marshall, was charged with breaking and entering and cruelty to animals.

Davis shot the dog about five times with a .25-caliber gun and stabbed and cut her several times with the sword, said Sheriff’s Detective Butch Hart. Hart said the dog was still alive when she was cut.

The dog’s owner, Jimmy Jacoby, said he did not know Davis, and he’s trying to understand what happened. Authorities had not determined a motive.

“I wish he could feel the pain that this family’s feeling right now,” Jacoby said.

The dog was gentle and playful with the family, he said, but also ready to defend them.

“If a stranger came in the yard, they were going to get bit, because that’s the type of dog I trained her to be.”

Davis kicked in a door to enter the house, officials said, and fled when a resident returned home. Deputies set up a perimeter, and Hart arrested the man not far away after spotting him hiding behind a construction backhoe — still holding the sword.

A report estimates the dog’s value at $500, but Jacoby would not put a price on a member of the family.

“There’s no price value worth my dog,” he said. “Something so valuable was taken from me that you can’t replace.”

Great Pyrenees Pictures / New foster dogs
« on: October 27, 2005, 11:17:19 am »
I got two new foster dogs Wednesday night. Venus and Ivy were surrenderd by the owner because of his wifes failing health. They are super sweet girls, but Ivy is a bit of a trouble maker.

At 5:30, I hear something like a hyena yapping outside my window. It's Ivy. She had pushed the old screen door open and proceeded to bark at my neighbor's house, the cop who's wife has complained about the barking. Luckly, I think they were already awake, so maybe she didn't bother them.

I came home for lunch, and Earl, greets me, alone, in the back yard. No Ivy, no Venus, and no Kendra. (For those who don't know, My old dog, Buddy Boy got scared by fireworks on New Years eve, got out, and got killed right down the street.)

Needless to say, Pupdaddy just about paniced. Luckly, they were just down the street, in the dirveway of my neighbor who is afraid of dogs!

When I took them home, I found the side gate (4' chain link) unlatched. A while later I tested them. I sat down outside the gate and called the dogs. Ms Ivy wagged her tail, looked at the latch, and flipped in open with her nose on the second try! That gate is now chained shut, and the girls are in a 6' x 12' x 6' high kennel!

You can't get mad at them though. They are just too sweet. Here's a picture of them.

I'm not sure I like this. If you know someone's name and state that live in, you can see their Drivers License and Picture in the internet.

I don't like this! Who could we complain to?

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Garage Sale
« on: October 20, 2005, 08:39:40 pm »
SPIN had a garage this last weekend at my house. Members and friends donated lots of good stuff, and the usual stuff you find at sales. By the end of the second day, we had raised $950.

Stormy, of Katrina evacuee, was a hit. He's a friendy dog, about a year and a half old. He mostly sat and wagged his tale, but ocassionally told someone he needed petting!  He's a pyr mix, so has some odd badger marking anyway. You can see from his picture, he's lost some hair. That pink skin was blood red when he arrived here. You can also see that he's double jointed. This dog can get himself in to WEIRD positions!

One of the leftovers form the sale was a cute pink sweater. Kendra had to show Pippin that pink is a GIRL color!

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Family Reunion - Deuce Update
« on: October 06, 2005, 12:01:27 pm »
About July 18, www.SPINrescue.org got an email that three pups had been found in Arlington Texas. Pupdaddy got #2, who he named Deuce, Karen J. got the other two named Lucy and Trey. The next weekend Trey went to Kansas with SPINner Diane.

LaurieW adopted Lucy on August 16.

Bob and Joan of Irving adopted Deuce from Pupdaddy on September 14. Their Aussie mix Sidney was so happy with his new playmate, now named Apache, that Bob and Joan decided to adopt brother Trey. After a weekend of wrangling, transport from Kansas to Oklahoma City was arrainged for Trey. Bob and Joan drove up Monday and picked up their new boy, now called Comanche.

Today, we brought all three back together for a play date.
