Unless he's eaten something strange I think I would have him checked.  If he poos the same way next time then get him to the vet.  It "could" be blood in the stool.  Heavy parasite loads can cause this too...And hooks don't always show on a fecal.

Jet black -- in humans this is called melena and usually represents an upper GI tract bleed -- stomach, esophagus etc. You should get it checked out.

what are hooks.

I think she is referring to hookworms. Very nasty little intestinal parasites. :P

I'm sorry to hear about your dog having so much trouble lately!!! :'( I hope he feels better soon!!!

Please get your puppy to a vet immediately.  Like the others said, black tarry poo usually means the upper GI tract is bleeding.

I've been dealing with this for almost 2weeks with my boy Tenchi, and we almost lost him.  He is now on his way to recovery thanks to lots of bloodtests, IVs and medications, but its still not totally over.

Best of luck with your little puppy!  keep us updated please!

I would take him to the vet ASAP, better be safe than sorry. Black stool is not good, as everyone has stated it means internal bleeding. Sending good vibes your way.

We had hookworm and the poo was bloody and loose, not black.
though each dog may be different.
it is good to get a vet check.

I just saw in your other post that your puppy is getting norocarp, which is generic Rimadyl.  Please don't give him anymore, at least not until the vet checks him out today.

I'm wishing you the best of luck with your little boy at the vets today!

Not always.  Hooks live just outside of the stomach (I can't remember my anatomy right now) but can cause black poo. The redder the blood, the closer to the anus the critter is bleeding.  Depending on diet and excersise and metabolic rate, dogs usually take 12ish hours to complete a digestive cycle.  If you have one with a longer metabolic rate, you can have black poo from parasites.  Not usual but does happen.  I'm always amazed at the number of medical people that will tell you hooks WILL show on a fecal every time when it's simply not true.  They only show when they shed and that's about every 6 mos and you just have to catch them when they do.

I want to apologize for answering so quickly and not asking for more information.  I should have known better.  Drug use can drastically alter any dx and I should have asked about diet, habits, and illnesses first.  I'll be more careful next time.

I hope he gets to feeling better very soon.

Vet has taken him off naracarp and said to give him paracetamol for two days to let his stomach settle down as he had also been sick a few times. His poo seems to be back to normal but is still in a lot of discomfort and cant get up to standing position by himself we have to lift him up till he gets his balance then he seems ok for a while. The vet has prescribed rimadryl to be taken twice daily until he gets opinion from specialist as to where we go next.
