Collars, crates, & other cool things / Kong Goodie Bone
« on: March 16, 2006, 08:53:16 am »
Just want to give 2 thumbs up to this toy.  I didn't know if it would actually be worth getting, but Bava loves this.  He has to work at getting the litle treats out for a long time.
It holds little treats in the ends, and they stay in a lot better than a regular kong that has a larger hole.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Keeping the psycho in check
« on: March 15, 2006, 09:12:22 pm »
Ok, I am one day into Bava's recovery at home, 1 day!  I stayed home from work to be with him, and he has been a super good dog all day... Until tonight.  He's acting pissy toward the cats for some reason.  I take him outside on leash to piddle, he does his business, meanders and then lays down.  We've been through this many times before, usually if I can manage to get my hands under him and get him on his feet I can lead him back in.  That is unless he pulls a crazy-legs move on me.  He rolls on his back kicks his feet, and mouths, I usually take a paw to the face but I can usually man-handle him enough to get him back up and going.

Here's the problem, He's hurt, I can't do that, I can't let him jump around, etc. And usually me getting him up when he is crazy like this he takes as an invitation to be crazy and have the zoomies.   I'm trying to be really really careful of that leg he just had surgery on, on Monday.  So I sit down in front of him and turn my back to wait him out.  I find a stick and act like I am playing with it.  15-20 minutes later he gets up and bounces... Arrrrgh, no. I grab him by his collar, but his disposition seems "stiff" like he could unwind like a spring at any minute and start running circles around me w/ the zoomies, etc... And kinda agressive , it's like he has chosen this time of all times to test boundaries.
I lead him back into his crate and he looks kinda pissed, which is really odd, I don't recall him ever acting pissed.  I give him a bully stick which he refuses, thats VERY odd.  He has never not wanted a bully stick.

I don't know if this is because he is feeling better, or if it is because he doesn't feel good, or if it is some side effect of some of the medicine he's on.  One thing I do know is I can not man-handle my hurt little man right now to get him to do what is good for him.

Any ideas? This is weird. I think this could be a very long 3-4 weeks. ???

This cat is funny: http://killsometime.com/Video/video.asp?ID=421

Our cats will kinda chirp at birds and squirrels they see out the window, but they don't sound like this.

Been kicking around all the ideas for different type of flooring, we're redoing some of the floors in our home, and I'd like something easy to maintain, and that has good traction for the pups.  The tile in the kitchen is ok, until you add a bit of water & newfy drool, and then it's like stepping on a banana peel.  I've put laminate in 2 rooms, and while I love the durability and the look, it is really slick on my feet in socks, and the pup's feet.  I put it in the entrance, and if bava comes in with his feet wet , it's like bambi on ice, I hate it.   I'm sure carpet is the ultimate traction solution, but I am not a fan of it.

What's worked for others?

I did find some products you coat your tile/laminate/vinyl floor with that are supposed to enhance the traction, but I have no experience with them, anyone tried these?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Combatting passive resistance
« on: January 04, 2006, 04:31:09 pm »
Ok, when Bava decides he doesnt want to do something or go somewhere, he lays down.  Two examples, taking him out to pee , when we are coming back into the house occasionally he will jump into this low lying bushy area close to the front door, and lay down in it, refuses to get up, no matter what.  If I go to pick him up he will roll on his back and go into crazy dog play mode.  He did it this weekend, while we were doing some exploring closed to the water, he wanted to get in sooo bad, but we had other places to go and couldn't have him muddy / wet with us, so he lays down in the dirt of course walking back out and pouts, and I reach down to pull him up he rolls on his back starts mouthing and kicking his muddy paws, being a big old goof.

If her were a smaller dog, I'd just pull him up by his collar, but not when they're this big, it would probably hurt his throat.  We've started making him wear a harness again, so that would help if this happens when he has it on, but I'm sure he won't have his harness on next time this happens, it never works out that way.

It was kind of a cute behavior, and it's probably part of growing up learning the word "no", but it's more of a pain as he gets heavier (he is 90lbs now)

Any ideas?

o make sure that Precious is safe, please come to the shelter before 5 PM on Thursday, Jan. 5. The shelter will make every effort to hold over, but there are only 12 adoption dog runs and there are many in stray hold awaiting their turn, so space is at a premium. So that shelter personnel may spend time with their families, the center will be closed Monday, January 2.

« on: December 22, 2005, 02:07:49 am »
Thank you for the great gifts!! To say that they were a hit would be an understatement ... Bava is in love with the chicken and will not leave it alone, the frames are beautiful.  I want to get a good picture so everyone can see these frames, they are too cool, they have little bones and stuff on them and bava and mowgli's names on them.  They didn't get their treats yet, but they will get some of them tommorrow, Thank you so much for the great stuff!!!!!!!

We had to show them separately, because they are so retarted when they are together.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Properly Fitting a prong collar
« on: December 20, 2005, 01:15:37 pm »
We tried a prong collar the 1st time with Bava this weekend, and it made no difference whatsoever.  I wanted to use it for his Petsmart visit where he feels the need to visit with every single person in the store.  I had removed 3 of the links so that it was not loose, but it looks like he was wearing it too low.  He pulled like the dickens to try and visit people, as usual.  I did fit the collar with the rubber tips.  I bought the collar because I thought it would be easier on his trachea than a regular band, and was more worried about him injuring himself with the prong collar, but apparently I didn't have it positioned high enough for a proper correction.

Anyways, I found a really informative page on how to properly fit the collar on your dog and wanted to share it:

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Which fence would you want?
« on: December 19, 2005, 05:37:38 pm »
I'm installing a new fence starting probably next week, and can't decide between these 2 types, I like the look of wood better than chainlink, and a privacy fence is out for the amount of area I am fencing in, and high winds during hurricane season.  My only concern with the picket type is that the spacing of the posts would need to be wide enough to not get doggie paws stuck in them if they jump up on it.  We will also be using an electric wire on the inside along the bottom.

What do you think? Any experiences good or bad with these 2 types?
