Today while we were at the movies my husbnad was workingo n the kennel and making things more safe for our animals.  When I arrived home he was frantically waving at me.   My heart dropped, I just thought Oh God not something else....

However.....(DRUM ROLL)
Shadow is in the house, Anthony is screaming his head off in total joy, and I am crying...OMG!!!!  He searched the woods behind the neighbors house, he heard crying when in the kennel working and went on the snowmoblie looking again, after 2 hours in the woods on foot and calling her he must have gotten close enough and she started hollering, he found her
STUCK IN THE NEIGHBORS TRAP.  CAUGHT AROUND HER HEAD IN A SNARE LYING NEXT TO A BIG CLAW TRAP.  She was very fat 4 days ago, and is very skinny now, dehydrated, and weak, but she is going to be ok, she will be on broth and gatorade until tomorrow.  Monday she will see the vet, he said she should be fine.  We have also called the police who notified the state game wardens.  I am waiting for a call right now.  It is the law that you must check your trap line EVERYDAY.  On Wednesday and Thursday they were asked to check their traps.  The wife said "I don't know if he has traps"  He said he would look.  4 days later they are still unchecked except by my husband and THANK GOD this little girl has a will to live....
Anthony got on his knees and she stood up and hugged him.  Attached is the picture.  THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE SUPPORT AND PRAYERS.  Shana

I will try the pedialyte.  I just cannot believe she LIVED stuck by her head for FOUR DAYS!  It makes me so ill thinking about how cold it has been, the ice and snow storm we had, and beside that I am really really angry that these people were so irresponsible KNOWING she was missing!  I want to go over there very badly, hubby said no, I want ot call, hubby said to just wait until the police and game warden call.  I know he is right, but I have alot I want to say.  I am just biting my tounge right now and will let hubby handle it.  I am so grateful she is home.  I cannot believe it.

Yippie! Way to go Shadow! I am so glad you kept looking!  ;D (We need a dancing smiley face here.)

Remember, it's hard to take back things once said. Let the local authorities handle this. You just worry about getting your baby fat again! We do need some more pictures though. Wow Anthony now has 2 little ones!

Merry Christmas Shauna.

I agree with good hope, let your husband handle the head on confrontation with the neghbors. And every night go out and rip those traps out of the ground and leave them in a heap. Don't get mad, just get even.
So glad Shadow is back where she belongs!

That is sooo great!  :D I am so happy for your family and especially your son!  I know when my daughter is hurting I am hurting too, so I can only imagine the emotional torture this has been for all of you!
I am glad Shadow has been reunited with his loving family and is back on his path of being a fat, happy puppy!
I hope those neighbors learn a lesson from this in some way!

YAY! I read the original post and was really upset. But poor little Shadow, stuck out in the cold in a trap for so long. I bet if she could talk, she'd have a story to tell. So what does Shadow think of Ginger, or haven't they met yet?

Personally, I'd feel like shoving the neighbours head in one of his own traps and leaving him there, but it's not worth a murder rap is it.  ;D

I know it is hard to take back things..,.Fortunately when my Greek blood starts to boil my husband is the voice of reason.  She is SO SKINNY.  Lots of love and good food will help her bounce back.  Her temp is normal, and her lungs are clear (I just listened again)  She has some diarrhea but I expected that and she is doing quite a bit or whining.  Shei s our first dog to take a snowmobile ride!  I will take some pictures tomorrow when she is hopefully feeling better but attached is a few pic's of her I just took.
: Re: PLEASE EVERYONE READ
: kildeskennel December 09, 2005, 09:05:29 PM
You know what simply amazes me is the type of snare she was in, stuck around her neck it is designed to choke the life out of the animal snared.  Typically the pulling and thrashing pulls it tight and it gets tighter the harder you pull, and locks it just continues until the animal is gone.  Steve said he could not believe how smart she was to be so still it was tight but not tight enough to kill her, he said when she realized he was near and started "screaming in distress" he lost his winter hat running, he said he knew then she was in a snare but it was windy and it seemed like her voice was coming from all directions then he found the trapping area, buckets of bait everywhere.  I cringe just thinking how terrified she had to have been and for 3 nights and 4 days....
Now we have 2 babies both for hunting birds.  And so the saga continues.  I will update everyone when the Game Warde calls, apparently they don't have an "On Call" so the dispatcher left messages at their homes and offices.  I called my friend who is a highway patrolman and knows the Game Wardens around here and he provided some numbers so now it is a waiting game.  I am also attaching some pic's of Cali, Aidan,Shadow, and Beauty.  The pic's of cali, Shadow, and Aidan were taken the night before she dissapeared, the one of Nic and Beauty was just last night.

The Game Warden called, he is going to be "visiting" them and before he does he will check their trap line.  I still cannot stop tearing up everytime I look at Shadow...IMyri ssa, my daughter, wrote a 3 page letter to the newspaper on trapping responsibily, and what happened...The y do not take articles that long, but I am turning it in anyway and her and I will be editing it to a manner that it will be accepted in the letter to the editor.  If it is printed you will all recieve a copy via big paws of the article.(actually I will write it in a post titled " Our Experience" so you all can read it)  I suspect it will be given the size of our town and the situation.  We have had to take off Shadow's collar as her throat under her chin has a HUGE swollen area.  Andy, our vet will check her Monday.  He is not overly concerned as she is breathing fine.  Attached is Myrissa loving Shadow...

: k2campbell December 10, 2005, 02:28:35 AM
I really hope the letter speaks volumes and prevents this from ever happening again.  Some people just don't care (and) I can't stand that!

Shadow looks to be quite comfy back at home - I'm so happy for you guys!  What a relief.  I'm sure Shadow is relieved as well!

I think the only residual effects she will have is a UTI which of course can be treated.  Steve will take her in to the vet tomorrow, he will check her over and as I am almost 100% positive she has a bladder infection she will probably come home on an antibiotic.  She is peeing like crazy, I took her out and she peed 3 times squatted 5 and only dribbled the last few times.  Immediately on coming inside she began squatting again, more than once, but only dribbles.  Mabye just nerves, but she acts like a classic bladder infection.  ANyway, I am off to the m ovies AGAIN, my daughter missed out on seeing Narnia yesterday and was not very pleased with me, the little town 10 miles up the road has an old movie theatre literally ancient, you can see movies for 3.00, so off we go!

Narnia was very good, the second time around was not bad either.  Having 2 pups is quite the treat !  Actually 3 but Cali is almost 6 months old, not little like the other 2!  Anthony is very happy Shadow is home, and Ginger is following Steve around like he is her mother so I suspect she will turn out being mainly "his" girl.  Whichi s ok.  Steve and Anthony hunt together, so they will each have a girl to train together also.  Everything works out the way it should in the end doesn't it?  Steve does not like the name Ginger, he does not think it fits her, I have to agree she is just so wild and fierce!  Who knows if she will continue as Ginger or if he will change her name.  I am exhausted and going for a nap!

Sorry but when you first posted about Ginger I thought of Granuaile (Grace O'Malley).  She's a gaelic pirate, known for her firey red hair and fierceness in battle.  Couple of links about her here.  (Unfortunately most Gaelic names can't be pronounced by English speaking people  :P  )

And just tp reiterate what everyone else said, I am SOOOO glad Shadow is home (Ask Matt I was bawling my eyes out), and the B****** that is responsible for your and her pain had better hope the authorities give him a stiff enough penalty or he'll have alot of PO'd woman with big dogs to deal with.

Mary, You aren't kidding, we are going to be incredibly busy, or should I say the Dad and son will soon be training their pups.  It is going to be a wild ride!  The more the merrier when well trained I say!  We are going to be adding another kennel out the back door and wrap around the back of thehouse as soon as the ground thaws and we can did holes for the posts then when the dogs are inside we can safely let them out of the house, this will also give me a containment  area for in heat females.  Talk to you soon!

Oh, I'm so happy to hear this news!  This truly is a Christmas miracle, for her to be able to survive freezing temps, confined and with no food or adequate water.

I hope the story gets printed in the paper.  Instead of an editorial, they should actually interview your family for a story.  It would be very educational for many people.  I hope your neighbor is punished for being so irresponsible with his traps.

I love the pics you've posted so far.  Looks like everyone is enjoying the family reunion.  Again, I'm so happy she was able to come home safely.

I am soooooo happy to hear that it was a happy ending. You all must feel soooo relieved, and be in a total happy place  ;D

For traps, well I think of traps in general, well what I think of traps should not be put in writing, at least not on here, or Jabas will ban me lol. What I think of traps that are not taken care of in the fashion they should, well she will ban me just for thinking what I am thinking right now.

I understood use of traps in the cave age, but NOW........

Give big hugs to the poor thing, and I am sure she will be "fatten" up in no time  :D

I am still so totally AMAZED that this came out so good!!!  I just think of that poor puppy out there by herself....my heart justs aches.  I sure hope she recovers fully from this!!  When I take Mike out in the woods with me I always worry about traps even though I am in parks that don't allow any type of hunting I just don't trust some people!!!  I remember a friend of mine took her dog running the bike trail between Chisholm and Buhl and she lost him just briefly just to find him being strangled in a snare.....they were lucky and she freed him.  I just haven't forgotten that.   I am just so glad that yours turned out good, too.  Must have been all the positive thoughts from all the BPO group, right???!!

OH MY!! I'm off BPO for TWO DAYS and I totally miss the best story ever!! I was telling my husband about Shadow's disappearance on Friday and how I couldn't believe an eagle would carry off something so big. He's from the country so he could see it happening.

I was praying that maybe Shadow would show up somewhere in the woods. I guess a lot of us were! I'm so happy she is back home and will be OK.

Please let us know what the warden says after his "visit" to the neighbors and I can't wait to read your daughter's letter to the editor. Good for her! I'm so impressed with children that can take a negative situation like this, learn something from it, ask questions and make it a positive to spread the word so it doesn't happen again. You must be very proud of your family.

Must love Dogs, shadow is indeed a full lab, her parents are beautiful!
Update on her vet visit:  She is being treated for a bladder infection, as well as a precaution for the swelling in her neck.  She will likely have scar tissue for life but we want to be sure that no abcesses form while her neck heals.  On wednesday she will visit with our vet for a day with Cali and recieve her 2nd set of shots and Cali her rabies vacc.  She was also wormed and looks much better today, more lively and ALMOST back to her old shennanigans!  The editor of our newspaper emailed me today with permission to print the letter I wrote to the editor. which is attached below.  I have yet to hear on Myrissa's.

" Irresponsible trapping in Tenstrike

On December 7 my son's 10 week old lab dissapeared after being let ouside to
go to the bathroom.  My husband looked everywhere.  We are well aware that
our neighbors and other local individuals have trap lines around us.  I
called our neighbor and left a message letting them know the pup was
missing, my husband actually went to their house and asked if they had any
traps, and if so could they check them to make sure she was not in one.  4
days later on December 10, while outside working on our kennel he thought he
heard yipping and decided to investigate one more time.  He looked for over
2 hours and finally discovered a trap line.  Our puppy was caught in a snare
around her neck where she obviously had been for numerous days and nights.
She was still alive, terrified, abrasions and swelling all around her neck
where the snare had caught her, and dehydrated.  What once was a little
butterball is now a bag of bones.  She will recover with TLC but as far as
the irresponsibili ty displayed by the trapper in leaving his lines unchecked
for 4 days even after being aware a puppy may be caught in one of his traps
I find unforgivable and reprehensible, showing a total blatant disregard for
the laws governing trapping which state unless a water set you must check
your line everyday. Clearly individuals who are so careless have no business
trapping to begin with.   You should be more careful in the future or you
may catch a hefty fine.

I had to edit it a bit from the rough draft as it was a bit inappropriate (well very) for publishing, it was however very good for me to blow off the anger I felt! It will be very interesting to see if an actual article will be written from myrissa's story!  Stay tuned!
