Anything Non-Dog Related / The birds went outside yesterday(pics)
« on: March 27, 2008, 09:12:14 am »
Thought you all might enjoy this- I took the macaws outside for a couple hours of sunworship yesterday. I pretty much stayed hunkered in the shade and had a beer and read a book, but they had fun soaking up all the rays. It was about 75 here. Milo, my female blue and  gold, is a lunatic and ran all over the deck and up and down everything and chased the boys and laughed and rolled around on her back and tried to steal my doritos.

Anyway, enjoy!

Anything Non-Dog Related / ***Important!!! GARAGE DOOR OPENER THEFTS
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:31:29 pm »
This just happened to a friend of mine and I wanted to spread the word. Please crosspost this.

A friend of mine was out to dinner for only a few hours. When she came out, her car had been broken into. Suprisingly, they didn't take the car radio, but they took the garage door opener, and then took her regisration out of the glove box.

They then GPS'd their way to her house using the registration address, opened the garage door, gained access into the house and completely cleaned her out of electronics, jewlery and valuables. Luckily her three dogs were not injured, the robbers locked them up in the bedroom.

This is becoming a bit of a trend here in NC, with Charlotte in particular having had several of these in the last few weeks, but I doubt this is an isolated thing, and so I wanted to spread the word and say PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPENER IN THE OPEN!!!! Also, keep your registration in your wallet, or someplace other then the glove compartment!

I can't believe this happened. I am still shaking and its been several hours.

I took the dogs to the park today, so Whiskey could swim and I could work with Annie and Cisco on leash training (a little bit of progress in that they move now with a leash on, but still have no intention of walking with you)

On the way back to the house we swung by Petsmart to pick up some chewwies. I left the kiddos in the car and just took Whiskey in, since A) 3 perfectly behaved dogs would be too many in a store, and B) these are NOT 3 perfectly behaved dogs.

I rolled the windows down, gave them kisses and locked the doors and went inside. It was about 70 degrees out but I still didnt want to leave them too long so we weren't in there but a few minutes.

When I came out, I heard a puppy crying. At first I was a little confused, then I realized it was startled/hurt yelping and it was coming from the direction where I was parked.

Someone was pulling Annie out of the side window. She must have jumped up on the window and they reached in and grabbed her scruff and started hauling her out. They had her about half way out by the time I saw them, and she had spread her legs and locked her hips in the window and was screaming when I walked out of the store. The guy trying to take her was yanking on her neck trying to get her disloged from the window when I saw them.

I screamed at them and screamed help into the store and dropped my bag and ran at them. He dropped her and she hung from the car and I went straight for her to catch her before she could fall and break something and in the meantime I dropped whiskey's leash.

Whiskey kept going after the guy, and so did a store employee who was getting shopping carts. The employee caught him before Whiskey did and tackled him and pinned him while I dialed 911. He was a middle aged hispanic man who apparently didn't speak english, or didn't want to, because he wouldn't respond at all to me. He just shrugged at me and looked away. Bastard.

Annie is ok- I took her to the emergancy vet and she doesn't appear to have twisted anything or strained anything from being sea-sawed over the window. Cisco and she are both fairly traumatized- Cisco is of course too big to go through the window, but was cowered on the other side of the car and shaking when I got in to him- I think his sister's screams just really freaked him out. I bought all three of them ice cream and we came home and just tried to relax, but I have been back and forth panicked, furious, and crying all day. The police really pissed me off too because they were only going to charge him with attempted larceny which is like nothing, instead of dog-theft which is a felony.

Anyway.. just thought I would vent a bit.. the closest thing thats ever happened like this was we had two men break into my backyard and into the kennel to either steal rescues or perhaps MaiTai (my greenwing macaw who was new and in quarentine from the other birds) but they didn't get far at all before the alarm system caught them and so it really wasn't nearly as frightening as this. My poor little annie bear........

OOoooooooooh puppies.

I got called in to work a 16 hour shift yesterday AND today, which means that pretty much since 3pm yesterday my boyfriend has been alone at the house with the animals. I have volunteers who come over to help with the rescues, but he is on his own for the house pets, IE my pets

I just got a basically frantic email from Warren who said that

A) he can't keep Annie and Cisco in their crates, because they are shreiking, and he is giving in and letting them out

B) Annie and Cisco have discovered the paper under the birds playstands in their room and have dragged it ALL over the house and shredded it, spreading feathers, poop, seed, fruit and veggie peices all over the house

C) The wormer Cisco got has kicked in and Warren wasn't fast enough and had to clean up a big pile of wormy poop and vomit

D) Warren caught Annie jumping up to try to bite Maui (my one legged blue and gold macaw) in the bird room (unbelievable no no)

E) Whiskey knocked over the trash can, something he hasn't done in a long time but really, Im sure he is a bit stressed with the new pups...trash, everwhere! And annie found the paper towels from Cisco's wormy poop clean up and shredded them... reintroducing the worms into the floors

F) The birds, sensing chaos and stress have been screaming apparently non-stop all day. That would be three macaws (Two blue and golds and a greenwing) a sun conure, and 8 lovebirds. He has been unable to get them to stop screaming, including time outs and bribes of melatonin, peanutbutter and palm nuts.

G)Cisco peed right smack in the middle of the bed, because Warren has yet to learn the "Limp ball of fluff refusing to get out of the warm bed" roll of a puppy does NOT indicate that they don't actually HAVE to go outside, but rather, they would just prefer not to, thanks.

OOoooooooooooo h, if I come home and they are all alive, sane, and i'm not minus a boyfriend, I think it will be a miracle :D

Is it wrong that I cant help but laugh???

Alright. My boyfriend (Who does not live with me) has decided that after being around my puppies it's time to go ahead and get his own. He has been waiting to get a puppy for some time because he is a single father to a 3 and a half year old daughter and he wanted to make sure he had the time for one.

When he was a kid, he had an akita. He now wants an akita puppy. But his personality is very grabby, snuggly, squish-the-puppy, throw the ball for the bounding dog, etc. (Seriously, he has a golden retriever personality). Not only that, but I am really very worried because we've been dating for about 2 years and although he doesn't live here yet, that is something we have talked about in the future, and I worry how an akita will fit in with my household.

My never-the-same household of chaos, loud noise, big birds who are not caged but instead have a room of playgyms, cats, lots of other dogs, and constant changing rotating rescues.

Everything I have ever read or known about Akitas tells me that this is the wrong breed for him. I have nothing against Akitas, but just like any breed, they aren't for everyone, and I don't think he has the lifestyle an akita could mesh into well.

Someone help me! What other breeds can I point him towards that have similar looks (Really thats his thing, he wants a dog that looks like the dog he had growing up, which was a fawn akita), IE BIG, fluffy, curled tail, propped ears, etc-that doesnt have the typical northern breed prey drive, lack of interest in other dogs (or downright aggression), that likes kids (or tolerates kids) and can stand a shifting schedule or hectic household? Is anyone else drawing a blank, cause I sure am!!!!!!!!

BTW: We have already crossed out siberians.

Alternatively- is it wrong for me to get involved?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Need some leash training tips
« on: March 19, 2008, 10:44:21 am »
Normally I know exactly how to move forward on training new pups but these guys have me a bit confused.

Neither Cisco nor Annie is leash trained- and they are stuborn as mules. She told me she had never put either on lead, which at the time I found odd enough especially for Cisco- I know if I was planning to show a dog I sure as heck would be working on gaiting and lead work way before 5 months, but to each his own. I guess she just had her hands full with the other dogs and hadn't started their training yet.

Neither of these guys are willing to train easily lol. I put a leash on them and they become limp solid furry boulders. I offer hotdogs and liver mush and squeeky toys and get down and pat the ground and try to get them to just WALK on a leash (even without me holding it) and they wag their tails and maybe take a tiny step then lay back down.

No progress so far! Any advice?

Anything Non-Dog Related / I have eggs!
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:27:02 am »
I just realized, I have lovebird eggs! I have 2 sets of lovebirds that were rescues and ended up never leaving.. for some reason.. and for the last couple of months they have been collecting golden retriever fur and other suitable nesting supplies and building nests. Well I just peeked in their boxes and sure enough- both sets have eggs! One has 5, and the other 4!

Just what I need! More mouths to feed! LOL  ::)
