Grats on your new fid! He's precious!! Like Michelle said, birds are like potatoe chips so watch out LOL. I got my first macaw 11 years ago and now I have 11. No where NEAR Michelle's house, but I have three macaws (two blue and golds and a greenwing) 6 lovebirds, a sun conure and as of Monday, a quaker :D

Michelle, are you out in the country, or do your neighbors just get together and plot murder?

Oh she definitely got a little disturbed. It was amazing how she was cooing and loving on him until I explained he was a raccoon and then she just barely touched him with one finger when it was time to say goodbye LOL. She was pretty grossed out and did NOT believe me when I told her it was a raccoon, until I showed her pictures.

We had a nice long discussion about rabies/tetnus shots and I explained that Kittens are born with fur... and they dont have huge rubbery hands on all four feet, but you know... paws... and that the chittering/wuffling noise a raccoon cub makes is nothing like a purr a kitten makes... not to mention the totally different body and head shape, fur texture, smell, and anatomy.

Apparently there was another one that didnt make it, poor thing.

So, I get a call from this woman today. She tells me that she has a kitten she has been bottle raising for the last two weeks, and she just cant do it anymore, she has to go out of town because her mother is sick, etc etc, and she needed a place to take him. I walked her through a couple of her options, and it really sounded like she either needed to place him RIGHT THAT SECOND or she was going to take him to animal control, where he would be immediatly euthenized. When I asked her his age, she said "Well, his eyes are open now and he has fur, so I guess 4 weeks or something". I remember thinking...HAS FUR? what?

Then she said "he is really, really cute, his stripes are really showing up and they are brown and black." So ok, I'm thinking she has a little brown tabby. No other real thought.

So anyway, she convinces me to take this kitten, and she comes to the house about 30 minutes later, with it wrapped up in a towel. I cant see him yet, but she is telling me how sweet he is, and how he likes to paw at you and is purring and drinking almost a whole bottle now. So she hands me a towel and I open it and can you imagine my suprise when I see....

a baby RACCOON!

yep, this was one strange looking "kitten".

So everyone please meet Rocky (I know, I know, sterotypical.)

He is completely dependent on people and will cry and hold his hands out to you when you put him down, so I dont know if he can get to the point where he can be released. I am one of those who firmly believes in NOT handling them almost at all. She was talking about how she slept with him at night to keep him warm and carried him everywhere, so in my opinion he's pretty much ruined. But who knows, maybe with some tough love we can teach him the skills he will need :) he still has a long way to go, needs to be about 12 weeks before I can get him outside in a pen and start working with him, but I will most likely pass him along to a friend of mine who has a lot of coons arond that time, since I dont have a pen and I worry about the dogs. Luckily for me I have my wildlife rehab license!

Isn't he adorable?

Anyone heard this yet?

Here's the link to the bill proposition. http://www.animallawcoalition.com/breed-bans/pendingbill/523 According to this it is a bill proposing the outlawing of any breed "Traditionally refered to as a pitbull" within the state of ohio. Owners would have 90 days to "surrender their pitbulls" to the dog warden who would have 10 days to euthenize them. After 90 days, any one caught harboring, owning, keeping, etc etc a pittbull will have their dog seized and euthenized and be fined. They are wording the law to incorporate the word pit bull into the vicious dog laws, as in, owning a pit bull is equivelent to harboring a dog that has killed a child.

Quick question: Is this still america? I think I might have gotten lost.

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Guess the breed?? Yea right, good luck!

Website: http://www.wisdompanel.com/

I think with the whole rare breeds thing is to remember that the dogs are probably products of generations of mutts. The genetic test can only pull out the breeds it recognizes, and then it shows which ones are more dominate. So Lucy has more dachshund in her then anything else, but she probably also has a ton of un identifiable breeds all mingled in together to help her look the way she does. Same thing with the tiny irish wolfhound mix. And the vizsla mix that looks like a little schnauzer mix.

So, lets say for example you have a golden retriever who gets impregnanted by some random mutt with 200 different breeds in it's lineage, then the puppies would be dominate golden retriever, but they could also come up with some breed 20 generations back on the fathers side, like Chinese Crested. It doesnt mean that the golden bred with a chinese crested, it just means that was one of the breeds they were actually able to identify. Most mutts aren't 50% this, and 50% that, they are a melting pot of breeds and types. The whole thing should really be taken with a grain of salt.

Also- I had a great dane come in once, to the rescue, pregnant. When she gave birth, a volunteer kept the puppy. The puppy grew up to weigh 15 LBS and looked just like a wire hair Jack Russel, except chocolate colored. Confused the HECK out of us, and if I hadn't seen the mother give birth, I never would have believed it.

OK, so I found my new favorite thing to do. You know how they have come out with the genetic tests now to determine the exact mix of your dogs breeds? Its awesome! Well, if the test wasn't cool enough, you can go on their website and see the gallery of dogs that they have tested, and the mix results they got back. I spent about two or three hours last night going through some of them and trying to guess the breeds before I read the results. Thought I would give you guys a shot at some of the toughies :D :D

Here's how it works. Look at the name and the pic, guess the breed and write it down on a sheet of paper (or remember if you have a good memory but I put quite a few on here) then scroll down to the very bottom and start reading the results of the genetic screening. I always thought I was pretty good at picking dog breeds out of rescues... let me tell you, I got all of these wrong!!! so good luck!! :D

Thats him in my avatar...He might look familer- I have been mistakingly calling him a Golden Retriever for the last 2 and a half years.

Some jerk accosted me at petsmart this morning and wanted to know where I had gotten my blonde australian shepherd. When I told him Whiskey was a golden retriever, they guy argued with me, profusely, that he was too light to be a golden, and OF COURSE I was talking to a world famous australian shepherd breeder, and solid blondes were rare but he had one at home that was just about to pop with puppies. and obviously I had one, just look at the tail. The whole time he had this horrible looking backyard bred red aussie with blue eyes STRAINING on it's chain (yes, chain leash.) to get to Whiskey, and I mean scrabbling, barking, choking, coughing and spitting. The man was oblivous and didn't even look at his dog. So I calmly explained to the man that I was quite sure Whiskey was a golden retriever, that his tail was a birth defect, not docked, and that I honestly didn't think he looked anything like an australian shepherd, and I turned to walk away to get Whiskey away from the dog.

This is when Jerk number 1, turned to his buddy, jerk number 2, and said VERY loudly

"Can you believe this @#(*!@# idiot? She doesnt even know what kind of dog she has! Some people shouldn't be allowed to buy dogs."

So of course there was then a very fun argument where I introduced him to all of my thoughts about back yard breeders, rude rednecks who think they have a monopoly on canine knowledge, and horrible pet owners who have their dogs on CHAINS and can't control them worth a damn.

11:30 am and I can tell this is going to be a great day!

Awww poor beautiful baby boys.... (its so weird, I was thinking you should name one shadow if you had a melanistic buck!)

Whatever you do I'm sure you'll do right for them- I think if I were in your shoes I would probably vote for giving them a little bit longer to come around, like Sable did, but I'm not in your shoes :)

Keep us updated on the poor things!

Thought I would pass this along to you BPOers- My group is hosting our anual (more like semi quarterly) Adoption Fair this coming weekend (SAT may 24th). We'll be bringing out as many as I have volunteers for, so between 20-25 dogs. They'll be doggy items for sale to raise money and baked goods and games, and we'll also have some of the special needs kids, like Roo and Cody, come out as well to help raise money.

This is at Reedy Creek Park, in Charlotte NC (2900 Rocky River Road, charlotte nc) and we will be setting up in front of the dog park, like last year. Anyone close by, come on and stop by! You get to meet all the critters I have been talking about this year LOL :) More info at the groups website, www.adoptcarol ina.com

Check out Cramerton, Lowell, Mcadenville (Although you have to put up with the lights at christmas time there) belmont and eastern gastonia. Also, Fort Mill is a lot cheaper then York, property tax wise. Just stay AWAY from Charlotte, Pineville, Matthews, Mint Hill, Huntersville, Concord, etc. Those areas are WAY too pricey now that the property taxes have gone up again. Cramerton is a great little town, 10 minutes from Charlotte but a house that would sell for $155k sells here for like, 85k.
