I know this may be a little off topic, but does anyone know anything about Iams doing testing on animals? I thought I saw something by PETA about boycotting Iams food because of animal testing. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, just wondering if anyone else has heard that.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Pics from Louisville
« on: March 21, 2006, 12:21:56 pm »
Just thought some of our horse lovers might like a few of these pics. They are from the other night when Bradley and I went to Louisville. Bradley's first horse and buggy ride! Our horse's name was Sugar, and the driver had a cute dog named Joe who rode on his lap. The pics aren't that great, but I thought I would post them anyway.

Ok, where do I start?! Hmm, I think I stopped eating red meat around 17 years old. My cousin, who was also my best friend didn't eat it, so I stopped too. Then my mom's oncologist told her red meat has been linked to breast cancer, so I was glad I had stopped eating it. At 18, I had my first lumpectomy. So, not exactly sure about that research. But, anyway, for me I think it is the whole texture and color of red meat, and knowing where it comes from. I honestly can get sick thinking about it. Now, I grew up in NY, where there were TONS of vegetarian friendly restaurants and grocery stores. Jumping to the present, at 22 years old and living in the south, it is not so easy. Meat is everywhere. When people find out I don't eat meat, I am dismissed as a "yankee." Apparently it is not as popular here as it is up North. Still, that doesn't make me want meat. When my bf and I go out to eat, he always gets steak, and I always get pasta. And that's just how it is. When people here ask me why, usually I just shrug because my answer never seems to satisfy them anyways. Once in a while I can eat pork, but very rarely. When I think of the old meat factory movies, and about how the sausage is made, it just repulses me. My iron levels are fine, but maybe that is because I do eat chicken and turkey. Not really sure. I have gained weight since the diet change at 17, but that is because I have a MAJOR sweet tooth, and can't live without chocolate, and I LOVE dairy products. Kind of a Catch 22. Well, I hope this helps you out a little bit. Having said all this though, whenever I have Cesco with me, he gets a cheeseburger from whichever fast food joint I stop at, I just can't help it, and he loves them!!  :-[  ;)

I am so sorry about, your baby, that must be really tough. Last January we lost our Aussie who we had for 14 years. It was really difficult. But he let us know when it was his time to go. We kept wondering how we would know, and when he was having trouble breating, the vet said it was time. The only thing I can suggest (and you have probably already tried it) is buffered asprin. We had our Aussie on it for a while, and it did seem to help a little bit. Hang in there. I know it is tough, sending my thoughts and prayers your way.

I almost forgot, wasn't Nutro Ultra reccommended this year from the Whole Dog Journal also? I thought I remembered seeing it on the list.

I went to that website someone had posted about comparing dog foods a few weeks ago. If I remember correctly, the Chicken Soup For The Soul brand ranked very high, and so did Nutro Ultra. Personally I feed my cats the Nutro Indoor Complete also, and they do great. My mom feeds Cesco Nutro large breed adult, and her little guys, puppy max. She is a breeder and swears by the stuff. I would love to switch to the Nutro Ultra, but just can't afford it.

My mom sent me this and I thought you all would enjoy it  ;)

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long As People...

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.
The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very much attached to Belker and
they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.
They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.
Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up,
"I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him.
What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said,
"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The four-year-old continued,
"Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply, Speak kindly. Leave
the rest to
God.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to give you a quick update. I am currently in Fort Knox, I got here late cause I ran into traffic in Nashville. I was very tempted to call Rebekah and stop and see Turkey and her brother's and sisters, but I didn't have Rebekah's phone number!  :'( Anyway, my roomate is finishing the packing of the living room and kitchen. When I get home Thursday night I will have to attack my bedroom, God help me!! Lol, for right now I am taking this week to relax and sleep in peace, instead of fear. Something about being on a military base that just makes me feel safer! Plus being with Bradley and his guns helps, lol. I will keep you all updated I promise. Thanks again for the support guys!!

I'm movin, I'm movin!!!! Yes, those tips are very helpful, I think we will have quite a few bags to haul to the dumpster. We checked out the new place today, and I flagged down the only guy outside I could find. I asked him about the crime there and he kinda laughed at me. He said he has been there a year and hasn't had any problems at all. It turns out he will be our neighbor, he wasn't too bad to look at either, hehehehe  ;D I'm almost out of boxes, but people at work are gonna bring some in for me tomorrow. Anyone have any ideas on how to transport posters? I don't want to ruin them, yet I always manage to.

Lol, you all are the best, I love you guys. You add some much needed laughter to this craziness!!! I have about 5 boxes packed and am 1/4 through the kitchen. I have more stuff than I thought I did!! As for the guys upstairs, 2 of them were taken in today by the police for drug and gun charges. One ran away, and they can't find him, this is the one who is wanted for armed robbery in Gerogia, and the other one is upstairs right now. It creeps me out that I hear him moving above me, but my roomate left me her "barstool" to beat anyone with if they try to come in, lol. I think I will stick with my mace. So, yea, that is all I know about the guys upstairs. My roomate is going to stay at her parents house in Lincoln, AL, in between packing bouts here while I amm gone. She is a strong country girl though, and she is bringing her own guns back with her. She is not someone I would mess with!! I took pics of the bullet hole and the falling ceiling and I will upload them asap, but I really gotta get some more packing done first. I will try to load some pics from the flood though (also from the idiots upstairs). I am making coffee as we speak, and I now appreciate the fact that my parents moved me around so much as a child, because I know what it is like to have to pack quickly! Although, any tips would be helpfull! Thanks again guys, you all rock  ;)

"What about your bf?  Can't you forget about the spring break trip and have him help you get out of there?  Those guys could be out on bail in 24 hours...and you should be far, far away!  Talk to officials at your school, as well.  They can suggest alternative housing.  I agree with everybody else...don't worry about the legality....GE T OUT"

Bradley is stationed at Fort Knox for OABC. There is no way he can get leave time. I am going up there to see him, but he will be at work from 5am everyday (PT) to about 7 every night. I wish he could come help, with his truck it would only take one trip! Unfortunatly, that can't happen.  :-\

Oh my gosh, what a day this has been!!! First of all thanks to everyone for all your advice and support!! And Rebekah, thanks for the love from Turkey, please give her kisses back for me!!! So, here is the update on this whirlwind of a day!!! My roomate finally got back from her classes and was freaking out when she saw the mess from the bullet. We managed to meet with the supervisor of the apartment complex. She basically said they realized that they were lucky the bullet didn't kill me and they would terminate our lease whenever we wanted. After a HUGE sigh of relief, my roomate and I decided we had to get out ASAP. We went to a place called Cedar Place apts. and filled out an application. I explained to the manager what I had been through and he accepted us on the spot!! As I am writing this, I am trying to pack up a 4 bedroom apartment by myself, while my roomate is at work! I am nervous to be here by myself, but I am so glad to be getting out of here. I will pack all night, and then tomorrow I will leave for Fort Knox. I will be back Thursday night, and then I have to work, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and classes start Monday again. Sooooo, we told the landlord of the new apt. that we would be in next Friday! I have no idea how that is going to happen, but everytime I hear footsteps above me, I pack faster! It is a more expensive apartment, but it will be worth it. It is $515 a month for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom. It is unfurnished, but it has a gas marble fireplace, and it is in very good condition. With cable, internet, water, and power it will probably run about $750 a month. But that is divided by my roomate and I so it won't be that bad. The BEST part is they allow pets!!!! BUT, it is a non refundablle $350 pet fee  :-\ So, I will have to wait a while, and try to save some money before I can bring my babies there! That's ok though, they love being at my mom's house, it is a castle to them! Uggg, ok I have to get offline now, all I have packed so far are a few posters. Thanks for the good wishes everyone!! Keep your fingers crossed with me!!!
