We are looking into getting a new puppy. We want a dog with a good temperment, a good family dog. Preferably one that has short hair or doesn't shed much. We want a big dog, who doesn't mind the water. We are thinking about getting another lab, any suggestions?

I would suggest a Newf cuz they are the best (I'm not partial or anything ;)) but since you don't want shedding or long hair, how about a Great Dane?

Jabas..... Galahad read that post and is now in his room crying (his room being my bedroom) lol..... he wonders what you have against mastiffs? ::) BIG, short hair, goofy, calm, kiss magnest, smoochies and make wonderful pillows. What could possibley be better hehe

If you are not looking for giants, you could also try a doberman.. they are more toward medium-large rather than extra large and make fantastic family pets when properly socialized and trained. Course my bias could be showing too.

It's not shedding, it's the start of recycling! Newfie!! Newfie!!! Newfie!!!!! Just take the hair that they give you, so generously, and put it outside the you'll have more birds in the neighborhood! They love it for nesting!!! And the drool? It's great to stick important things on the walls (like hair!!)
Let's hear it for the Newfie team!!!

My first dane loved to swim. Grey on the other hand hates water. My rottie loves water, he is always playing in it. Here is a picture of my first dane swimming :D

I think labs are GREAT dogs... newfs too ;)
{no offense to the other breeds out there, I really haven't had an interaction with them!!}

I think a lab sounds like a good fit, but if were maybe wanting something different, maybe a boxer. Lots of fun and they enjoy the water, maybe not as much as labs do, but most will swim and play water fetch.

Cheyenne, if I wanted a large, short haired, water loving dog who doesn't shed, and had to pick a breed first, (but not including another lab) I'd choose a rottweiler. But, go looking for a dog you love, and who loves you. If she chooses to sit on shore and wait for you to come back to her, I bet you would cope with that!

I have only had one or 2 over the years that was not wild about it. Most of the time you cannot get them to come out.
The dog in the photo would lie on the dock, drop her ball off of it, and then do a surface dive, opening her mouth to get the ball, going completely under, and then coming up again.
She would jump off the dock like that as many times as you would throw the ball for her.
My 2 younger ones are really serious water chasers, they love to "eat" the spray from the hose, and you cannot keep them out of the water.

If you are looking for a dog that loves water and sheds minimally, rotties are great.
Having owned numerous Rottweilers who have all been house dogs for some 17+ years, and living with 3 inside dogs right now, I have to say....
THESE DOGS SHED.
A LOT.
YEAR ROUND.
If I do not vacuum EVERY day, (sometimes TWICE a day) I have black "hair drifts" in the corners.
I burn up a vacuum every 2 years or so.
DO NOT get a Rottweiler if you don't LOVE TO VACUUM.....

hey wha about one of those Roomba things that just goes around and does it? Has Anyone tried that? I want one but not sure if it is worth it.

If you don't mind going to the groomers every 2 months, a standard poople could be good. They don't shed and are great water dogs. But of course my first choice would be a newf, just comb everyday, collect all the fur and knit some socks and sweaters (newf fur can be spun).

Rottis are great!!! They do shed. I find it not too bad!
A Vizsla would be a great choice and meet many of the points you are looking for.
They like the water, have short hair and very good temperment. They get to be around 65 pounds for a male. Bigger but not too big. They do have alot of energy and do need daily exercise. They have great character. Farley is only 4 months.

I have heard the Roomba's are junk....waste of money. Might be okay if you didn't have dogs, but heard it doesn't do well at all with dog fur. And I'm not sure that it even works on carpet.
Curious to see if anyone on the list has had a good experience with the Roomba.

Awww...that is too bad re. the roomba...i was really wanting to get it and not have to worry about vaccuming or sweeping..I have all wood and tile floors I am now thinking about that one that is a vaccum then flips over to wash the floor...

We have a roomba-thingy, I think it's a generic one. It works pretty good for the kitchen which is tile and picks up an amazing amount of stuff. It will still miss some spots , but it takes no effort on our part to use it. It does get stuck going onto area rugs at times.

How about a Curly Coated Retriever. They are a low shed breed (somewhat variable indivually), sweet temperment, slightly taller than a Lab, about the same weight (longer legs, leaner body). They are water dogs, do not need clipping. It is a very unique breed, with the closest relatives being the Portuguese Water Dog and the Irish Water Spaniel. On one of curly lists recently, there was a thread about there being available pups at the minute (usually there is a waiting list for the pups)
