The first is of him with Michael, thesecond is his huge tongue kissing Michael and the last if his favorite place to kiss me....my lotioned legs. I am not sure why there and not sure if it is even healthy but he loves it. Do any of you have wierd kissers too?

Newfoundland Pictures / Something is in my mouth...
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:59:09 pm »
but I am not sure that you can see it...or can you? I took these of Bear with his favorite tennis ball tonight. I thought since we were talking about hiding things in mouths, I would show off his terrific hiding place! The first are of his HUGE mouth and the last one is him being a silly rolling around on his back.

Hello All! I've been out and about this weekend at Lake Havasu getting drunk and sunburned with Michael and our friends, but am glad to be back home with Bear and the BPO clan.  :D
I am in need of your help though. A while back I posed this question but had no responses so I am hoping to get some help with more minds working together. I want to add a section by your avatar which lists the number of posts you've made and your "status" as a member here. I would really like it to be dog related but unique- something special for us here on BPO. I was thinking of going with the paw theme originally- like toe nail, toe pad, little paw, etc. but had too much trouble with it. So, any ideas theme related that you have would be sooo greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was thinking about dogs today and I know that our dogs have many different issues than little dog owners do... but just how different are little dogs from big dogs besides the obvious size?

Newfoundland Pictures / If you think your dog sheds...

then just take a look at Bear and Bear. We decided to make a body double for him in case something should happen just to be on the safe side.  ;D Can you believe how much hair has come out of his undercoat? Without the rake he'd be dying of heat and dead hair and I would be dying from cleaning up all the extra hair on the carpet. hehehe

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / The Dog Whisperer
« on: May 09, 2005, 08:52:33 pm »
I got home early today because I was sick and got to watch Oprah which is a very rare occurance. Her guest today was the Dog Whisperer and I found him captivating. He mentioned that dogs who are very spoiled & pampered (ie. super rich people's dogs) are not well behaved or balanced because they don't do things that dogs do naturally. He said dogs need to be dealt with in this order everyday to maintain your leadership role as pack leader- exercise, discipline, then give affection. And when your dog seems overly happy to see you when you get home it is really just misplaced energy. Interesting huh? So, now I understand why Bear is sometimes uncooperative with me and how I need to be more consistent with the exercise & discipline beacuse I've got the affection thing down!  ;D

Specific Website Information / New Main Page to Big Paws
« on: May 09, 2005, 01:59:47 pm »
Okay...as you noticed I'm sure, the main page has changed. It's part of our continuing improvements for this site. What do you think? Do you like seeing just a few recents topics posted and then entering the DOG House to get to the rest? Do you like the intro for the Paw Prints? When the Bigpawepedia is up I'm confident you'll enjoy that too because it is so informative. So, let us know what you think because your feedback is very important to us.

Newfoundland Discussions / Super protector or big brat??
« on: May 09, 2005, 10:58:11 am »
This morning Bear and I went out for our usual morning walk/potty and we were later than usual. The sun is still down normally but we went out about 6:10 so we could see everything clearly. Every morning the routine is the same- out the front door, across the parking lot, down the back40 (long stretch of grass) around the apartments, to the street and back through the middle grassy area to our home. Today wa different though and not just because it was clearly daylight already. The minute we got outside Bear stopped and refued to move so I had to shove his booty til he moved. Then, as we approached the back 40 he froze in mid stride and pointed like a pointer. No movement, no budging, just a postured head, partly lifted front leg and staight tail. So, I turned him the other way and off we went happy as could be. On the way back though, we ran into secutiry officers and the same thing happened so we had to go far around them to appease him and allow us to get back to the house. I'm not sure if he was sensing something and just trying to protect me without making noises or if he was just being a brat and wated a new way to walk. Either way, my 15 min. walk turned into 30 and made me late to work! So, what do you think?

We have talked about a lot of things when it comes to our dogs, but never really how we chose the breed we have. So, what made you decide on your big/giant lovable breed?

Newfoundland Discussions / Yawning??
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:07:30 pm »
When waking up or just waiting for me to do something that Bear wants, he yawns. Not like tiny yawns either (as if anthing he does is tiny- lol) but like loud YYYAHHHNNNWWWW NNNNSSS. He seems as though he is totally lazy and half awake alot of times or that we are boring him to death. What do you think? Dogs yawning on a regular basis frequently- strange?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Big paws and the rain
« on: May 05, 2005, 04:41:52 pm »
It seems that no matter what the weather is like, Bear loves to go outside. When the rain comes however, he is in doggy heaven. He loves the rain and seems to want to be outside all of the time just chillin' in it. It can be aggravating on a walk too because he likes to stay outside as long as he can just getting as wet as possible. Do you have experiences like this or is my dog just wierd?

Newfoundland Pictures / Invasion of the Big Paws
« on: April 30, 2005, 11:13:09 pm »
Here we are in Carmel this weekend as Bear met fellow Newfs Drake and his buddy Yogi. The three quickly became fast friends and met up with two other Newfs at the beach as well as two Bernese Mountain dogs. A great time was had by all...especial ly Bear who is still snoring loudly with fond memories of the the past two days.  ;D

Bear is great in the house and is very well behaved for almost all of the time. Once in a while though (once every 6 months or so for a 1-2 day period) he goes through a face where he chews on something that belongs to us- like yesterday it was my address book and today it was an extra computer mouse. Is this normal or should I be doing something else for him?
