Great Dane Pictures / Belle update!
« on: June 25, 2006, 01:06:12 pm »
Just some recent pictures of Belle, my foster girl.  She's doing great.  She's a bit hard headed and has a very short attention span, but I think that is from not having much interaction in her past.  She's not cooperating very well on house training, either, but we're working on it.  She's a sweet girl and gets along well with everyone-including the cats.  She can be a little growl-y with her food around the other dogs which we are working on, but she doesn't do anything towards people and she doesn't do anything but growl at the other dogs, so it isn't that bad.

These aren't the greatest pictures.  I went in and grabbed my camera (which was in the air conditioning) and came out into the hot, humid summer that is Alabama and my lens fogged all up.

Don't ya'll forget she is for adoption, so if anyone needs a smallish mantle dane girl... ;)

It is coming up on the one year anniversary (well, next month-July 24) that Abby (cricket) and her family adopted Foster.  I'm so glad he found a wonderful home, but I will admit I miss his goofy self.  Just thought I'd share some pictures of him while he was with me.

This is Foster not long after I brought him home in November 2004.  Poor thing was so skinny and in overall bad condition.  He was malnourished and wormy too.  This is probably a week or two after I got him, so he had already put on some weight,

After some TLC and good quality food, it didn't take him long to muscle and fatten up and look healthy.  This is him and Brutus in January 2005:

And him in February 2005.  I've got more I'll share later, but can't find them right now.

Pit Bull Discussions & Pictures / Waylon and Willy, my two outlaws
« on: June 19, 2006, 09:02:25 pm »
I'm not sure if I've ever shared pictures of my two pittie mixes, Waylone and Willy.  If not, here they are!

A little history behind them first, though.  When I worked at the humane shelter, they were both brought in around the same time, but in different areas as strays.  Waylon was picked up by animal control, and Willy was a stray that wandered into someone's yard.  Waylon had a severe case of generalized demodex.  He was pink and had very little hair on his body.  While he was in the stray holding area, I had to keep a shirt on him at night so he would stay warm.  Willy also had generalized demodex, but it wasn't as severe.

I fell in love with them and offered to foster them.  I first had to get an area ready so I could quarentiene them from the rest of the dogs for a few days.  I planned on getting them on a particular day, but wasn't able to, so was going to get them the next day or two.  The morning after the day I had planned to get them, I walked into the office and the first thing the then director said to me was "You do know that white bulldog (Waylon) is going down today, don't you?"  She said it in such a condescending tone, she was a horrible director...any way, I told her I would be taking him that day, so he had better not go down.  I grabbed him and Willy and brought them up front to make sure she wasn't around them.  I could go on and on about her, she was a nut job...but I won't.

Anyway, they were both adopted by different people, but returned for different reasons.  I decided I couldn't let them go through that again and I became very attached, so I decided to give them a forever home with me.

They are great dogs, little trouble makers, but I don't know what I'd do without them.

Willy is the red and white one, Waylon is the white one

Great Dane Pictures / Belle-new foster Dane
« on: June 05, 2006, 01:12:17 pm »
Hi all, its been a while!  I really hate having limited internet access, but I'm loving living on my own now.

I mentioned a while back about getting a new foster dane, a mantle named Belle.  Well, here she is.  These were taken probably a month ago.  I've got some more current ones, but haven't downloaded them yet.  Part of me wants to keep her, but I may place her.  I haven't decided yet.

When I got her, she had a terrible yeast infection in her ears, an eye infection, and of course, her skin was infected.  Here eyes and ears have pretty much cleared up now, and her last skin scrape looked pretty good with very few demodex mites present.

I went out of town not long after I got her, so we started the ivermectin treatment.  I much prefer a holistic treatment over the traditional, but she really needed some kind of treatment immediately.  I've weaned her off the ivermectin, and will continue to use immune boosting supplements and skin soothing baths on her for the rest of her treatment.

I have officially moved into my new place (after several months of waiting), but I have no computer there, so I will have limited internet access for a while.  It sucks because I don't know what I'll do without my internet!  I've got so many forums I'm addicted to, BPO being one of them!!!

At any rate, I hope I won't be 'netless for long, and I will check in as much as I can until then.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / What am I?
« on: April 27, 2006, 07:53:03 am »
This is Charlie, my foster dog.  I got him back in June 2005, I think it was.  He was found along the side of the road by an old man, but the mad couldn't care for him, so he took him home and put him in his back yard.  He decided a couple of weeks later he wasn't doing the dog any favors, so he brought him to the clinic I work at because when he first brought him in, I told him to let me know if he needed me to place him.

I don't understand why he hasn't been adopted yet, he is a GREAT dog!  Anyway, I have my ideas as to what he is, I just like to hear what others think.  I'll tell ya'll what I think after a while.

Today, I sent Boss, my German Shepherd to the bridge.  He was crippled with spondylosis and could no longer walk-not even with support.  I'm going to miss my big fella.  :'(

Setter Discussions & Pictures / Molly before and After
« on: April 13, 2006, 03:19:01 pm »
Molly came into the shelter where I used to work as a stray.  A lady found her on the side of the curb in front of her house after a thunderstorm.  She was very, very skinny, her hair was thin, she appeared to be injured, and she was filthy.  She had a new flea collar on, so the shelter director made us hold her as a seven day stray.  She was going to be euthanized afterwards.

She was so sweet and so pitiful I couldn't let that happen, so I took her on as a foster.  I got her checked out at the clinic where I also worked at the time, and she was found to be heartworm positive, she had a dislocated hip on top of dysplasia, and had been shot at some point with bird shot.  Hip surgery, and HW treatment later, I decided I couldn't part with her, so I decided to keep her as mine.

This is her while still at the shelter a few days before her holding time was up:

This is Molly now:

Great Dane Discussions / Brutus getting a dental tomorrow
« on: April 13, 2006, 03:04:52 pm »
Please keep my big guy in your thoughts tomorrow.  He's been in need of a dental, so I'm finally going to have it done.  RMBs and recreational bones have helped a great deal in getting some tarter off, but hes got some on his back teeth that just doesn't seem to want to come off.

I know its just a routiene procedure, but it worries me whenever I've got to put my kiddos under.  I'm taking Choo-Choo for one as well.  I haven't decided yet if I'm going to do it myself or let one of the other techs do it.  It sometimes bothers me to work on my own animals...

Its April 28-30 or something like that.  Its the last weekend in April.  I'm going to be going some, whenever I'm not working or whatever.

Great Dane Discussions / Big dog...Little dog...
« on: April 12, 2006, 06:15:09 am »
I love it when the big dogs and little dogs get along so well, its just so cute.  This is Brutus and my Chihuahua mix, Choo-Choo from a couple of months ago resting on the couch.  This is at my new place, and we (the humans, the dogs supervised) had been working all day laying down laminate floors.  The poor dogs were tuckered out, so they decided the couch (without coushions, mind you) would be a good place to nap.  Brutus isn't normally allowed on the couch-due to his sheer size, but I thought this was so cute, I didn't make him get up.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Howdy-new here
« on: April 12, 2006, 04:11:24 am »
Hi, my name is Emily and cricket36580 referred me here.  I was Foster's foster mom  ;D

I am owned by an eight pack of dogs, and am currently fostering two dogs, so that makes my grand total...10 dogs.

I am a part time student and work part time at a vet clinic.  I run a non official rescue (NOT for profit, rather than non profit) with a couple of friends.

I am owned by:
Blacky- 13 y/o Lab mix
Boss- 12 y/o GSD
Choo-Choo- 6 ish y/o Chihuahua/Terrier mix (big dog in a small package)
Abby- 4 y/o mixed up mutt
Brutus- 4 y/o Great Dane
Waylon- 4ish y/o Pittie mix
Willy (unrelated) - 4ish y/o Pittie mix
Molly- age unknown English Setter

I'm fostering Charlie- 10-11 month old Aussie/Golden mix.  I've had him ever since June '05 and am very surprised he hasn't found a home yet.  He's a great dog.

and Dach who is a 2ish y/o Terrier mix.  He was adopted by a family last year, but he became increasingly aggressive (he didn't show that behavior when I had him, or I wouldn't have adopted him out) with their children and with visitors.  They decided it would be best to return him.  So, unless the right home comes along, I don't feel comfortable adopting out a dog with a bite history-even though he has shown NO aggression while he's been back.  So he'll probably end up staying here.

I'm working on resuing a mantle Dane from a lady I know.  The Dane has a pretty bad case of demodex and the owner is overwhelmed with it.  I've had more than my fair share of foster dogs with demodex, so I'm going to attempt to treat her.  I won't be able to get her for a few weeks yet, though because I'm in the process of moving.  She's being taken care of where she's at, so I'm not too worried about her.

I'm off to check out some more of the board, here is a picture of my crew (minus the fosters) I took this a couple of years ago.
