I have two saints and I live in Texas. I shave them EVERY summer. If I don't, they get horrible hot spots and and very very itchy. My dogs are thrilled to get shaved. I've had lots of people tell me not to, but not one of them lived anywhere where it gets to 105 degrees in the summer! Also, never fear -- My dogs grow back just fine. I actually have to shave them twice each summer to keep them cool and comfy.

I do Saint Bernard rescue in Austin, Texas and am currently fostering a wonderful Saint boy. He was an owner surrender and is very well behaved. He's totally housebroken and is already neutered. The previous owner claims he's AKC but didn't have papers. He's a big dog. I'm not sure of his weight but he's definitely larger than my two saints. But he's so sweet and gentle that it's not an issue at all. I just got him last week and he gets along really well with my dogs, kids and my cat. He currently has a cherry eye that needs to be fixed but I'm working on that. If you know anyone in Texas who might be interested in giving George a great home, please pass on my number. 512/280-2825. Thanks!

I've given up. . .  I have a back yard with no grass and holes the size of, well, a Saint Bernard. About All I can do now is pave over most of it. We are currently in the process of putting in a VERY large flagstone patio.

Good luck with your lanscaping  =)

I'd never considered getting a saint. My husband and I both like big dogs but we went to the pound looking for a nice, medium-sized, short haired dog. We came home with Sampson. He was only 86 pounds at the time because he wouldn't eat while in captivity =) and he was very shy. So shy in fact that they weren't going to adopt him out. I never knew how much I could love a dog until I got a saint. I've had labs, mutts and even an English Bulldog but I have never loved anyone the way I love my Saint. So, last summer we got another one. . .  now we have very happy (if hair covered) lives with Sampson AND Delilah.

I am so glad to know he ended up in rescue. . . .

We adopted our first Saint from a shelter where they were not going to adopt him out because of shyness issues. We had to beg and plead and sign a release form. He was just depressed. As soon as we got him home his real personality started to shine through.

Thanks All. . .

I appreciate all the advice. I think I'm going to go ahead and shave them. They are mostly inside dogs and I'm not going to shave them all the way to the skin so I think I can avoid sunburn. Also, they have good shady spots to hang out in in the back yard.  I'm in Austin and the heat and humidity are already starting to get to my older dog. He's pretty pitiful and just looks miserable.

Hi All -- I am new to the neighborhood and have a question. I have two saints and live in Texas. It gets REALLY hot here in the summer and I am wondering about everyone's opinions on shaving my dogs. I've heard that you shouldn't but we have shaved our older dog in the past and he seemed so much happier. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!!
