No experience with this myself but my SIL just sold everything she owns and went to grad school in Milan to study fashion!  She graduated from college in 2005 with a degree in Business, so it's definitely a change.  She got a great job right out of college but wanted to try something new.  I say go for it if you have a definite goal in mind.  Good luck!

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Pix of all the dogs

Just some pix of the dogs last weekend!

I use Equicare Flysect.  It's for horses so I don't douse them with it but it's pretty effective with just a few sprays.

This is an interesting post...for the most part, I feel that everyone on this board has "reasonable" and high expectations for their giant dogs' behaviour.  Binky is a Pyr and passed her CGC test with flying colors.  She knows not to take food off the coffee table and does not "counter surf," and the small dogs are also trained not to steal food.  However, I would not, as Patrick said, leave a piece of meat out to tempt them.  Sophie, our Leonberger pup, on the other hand, does surf and can't be trusted out of sight at all.  I do not "accept" this behaviour, but realize that there is a period of training to go through.  Maybe you have read posts about funny/bad things that people's dogs have done but it's nice to share such stories as we can all relate and I don't think that it's a matter of tolerating "bad" behaviour, Pyr or not.

Hi Everyone,
Yay, we finished our "flip" house today (took us 10 weeks) so now I have time for BPO!  We took a walk with all the dogs to the beach today- Sophie is finally interested in the water.  The prong collar has worked wonders on Sophie- we can finally take everyone out together.  She still pulls a bit but I definitely have a lot more control.
As for other updates, Leo is almost a year old now-time flies- and he just LOVES animals.  He can gently pet the animals now (instead of pulling and poking) and when we go out and see other dogs, he points and squeals and wants to pet them.  Wonder where he gets it from :)  He's not quite sure about the goats though!

Too cute!!!  He has grown so much- it makes me sad- Leo had the blue and yellow outfit at the beginning of the summer and now he's outgrown it already!

Oh, that poor dog- he's so lucky you came along.  He sounds like a sweetheart-even with his mischevious side!  I don't have too much advice on his "bad" habits but it's a Pyr trait to watch over their "herd" so maybe he just thought the stray cat was part of his crew.  He sounds very smart and I am sure he'll settle in soon enough.  Welcome to BPO- my crew is listed below.

Wow, can't believe your dogs calmed down after a day!  When we got the goats, we had to keep Binky on leash and out of the pen for weeks or she'd chase them like crazy!  The pix are ADORABLE and I'm glad everyone's settled down.

The prong WORKS...pretty well.  I've taken Sophie on a couple walks and the prong definitely keeps her heeling when we're on our own.  She does still pull when she sees something new but she corrects herself quickly.  However, we took all four dogs out today and she was a total spaz.  I even walked her alone before hand to tire her out but once the others joined in, Sophie was pulling and jumping and choking herself.  Still, I did have better control so guess we just need more practice!  Thanks so much for all the advice/stories!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Underweight Great Pyr
« on: July 30, 2008, 05:21:15 pm »
I know what you mean about the bad haircut- we got Binky a "summer cut" once and even she was embarassed!  It grows back pretty fast though.  Anyway, Binky is a female but she only weighs 69lbs- she is not underweight according to the vet, just kind of a runt!  We feed Solid Gold which is about $40 a bag and we go through two bags a month but we have 4 dogs, so I'd think your Pyr would only need one bag a month at most.  The more expensive food is definitely worth it- Binky was underweight before but now she is a solid 69lbs and healthy.

Thank you all so much for your advice.  I did try the prong on my leg and it really doesn't hurt so I feel better.  Sophie did go to obedience class and was perfectly behaved IN CLASS- the minute we got out, she'd revert to pulling and barking at other dogs!  We will be taking another class in fall once things settle down.  Tomorrow I'm going to try walking her with the prong and will let you all know how it goes.  Thanks again - I won't feel like I'm a bad owner, torturing my dog, knowing that others here use a prong!
