Anything Non-Dog Related / Is it just me, or...
« on: November 24, 2005, 06:10:40 pm »
Is the index page down?  Of, course, it might just be my computer, but I can't access that page.  There are some others, too; there must be a "bug" somewhere.  If this goes through then obviously we still have the ability to post (if only in this forum).

Anything Non-Dog Related / Hobby Farming Anyone?
« on: November 24, 2005, 11:04:48 am »
Does anyone else hobby farm, or plan on it?  What animals do you use/plan to use?

We are planning on using Dexter cattle, black Jersey Giants, buff Brahmas, Peking ducks, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Percherons, and more Arabian horses.  As far as other animals, we are thinking about including Alpacas, Cashmere Goasts, and Angora Goats; Merinos look interesting too, but we don't know if they can handle the Southeast's heat and humidity.

Of course, we'll have lots of big dogs, too!  Because of the location, we will basically be a little farm in the middle of the forest.  There are lots of predators, so those dogs will be a necessity.  In fact a nice friendly neighbor told us there is a panther and to be sure not to kill it.  :o  They will be our first priority, so Mother or I will be posting lots of pictures after we move.   :)

Sofia and Deena

P.S. We're going up to Austin next Wednesday for a couple of days to see those Cashmeres and Angoras, as well as the necessary set-up.  It should help us to decide on those.

Kuvasz Discussions / Sapphire Update; Calling Mrs. Kilde!
« on: November 17, 2005, 01:20:02 pm »
Sapphire has been different, shall we say, lately.  It has been, umm..., well....

sooo much BETTER!  ;D

We are so proud of that puppy.  I noticed the change Wednesday, when the weather turned cooler.  I was out playing with Sapphire, and I convinced her to come when I called although I hadn't actually said come until she was already coming.  (She likes to play chase outside, and, while she is good in the house - usually anyway, she almost never comes outside unless she knows she is wearing a leash.)  I later told her to "drop it" when she had a big piece of wood mulch, and she started to run away, but she came again when I called her and dropped it.  (That is another command she obeys in the house but not outside.  Do I see a pattern here?  :P)  I did other things with Sapphire also, but, overall, she was behaving really well.  I'm not a really good trainer, or she would probably be pretty solid by now, so I was glad to see some progress.

Today, something else happened...  Prepare to be shocked and not about the door!  ;) ;D

Sapphire opened the back door and burst in while a lady who teaches us piano was here giving lessons.  Then, she ran, wagging her tail, right up to the lady, whose name I don't know how to spell, and allowed herself to be petted.  She didn't even bark at Caleb, the lady's little boy, except for twice when he tried to hide.  She wanted to give kisses to the same little boy that she lunged at two and half months ago, and she only sniffed Caleb's baby brother politely, but still wagging her tail.

BTW, my mother talked to Mrs. Jackie ?? (I don't know her name), the Great Pyr breeder, about Pyrs, but something came up that I think is relevant.  She said that Pyr puppies will give a warning bark at predators, but they won't confront them until they are mature.  I guess Sapphire isn't fear aggressive at all; she is just being a normal LGD puppy!  :)  Based upon her current reactions, however, I wouldn't want to be on her bad side once she is an adult!

I am so glad that Sapphire is learning to be more respectful and obedient!!!

Food Discussion & Information / Warning Greenies!!!
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:18:18 am »
Sorry I haven't been on much, I should be back full force mid January. Received the following via email this am, just wanted to pass it on.

Deena

P.S. Sappire would vomit after she would eat them, so we stopped giving them to her.  That company is run by Meanies!!! >:(

*************

I have a warning to pass on with a story to tell of my own.....

On the way back from the Dobe National this year, I was walking one of the
dogs at the airport waiting for the owner to return our rental car when the
dog decided to throw up.....I was shocked to see a mass of green rubber-like
material and immediately called the owner. The mass looked like something
you would see in the pad under a carpet. I was assured the dog did not shred
anything...and that the only thing the dog had been given to eat recently
was a "Greenie"...one of those formed green dog treats that look like a
toothbrush.... .I couldn't believe one of those pressed dog treats would
reconstitute into
what looked like a mass of foam rubber pieces!

Well, after getting home my friend did an experiment.... cut up one of those
things and soaked it in water overnight....l ow and behold a mass of foam
rubber crap! Certainly NOT digestible!  We both made a note to never feed
those things again...and then last night in the Seattle area the newscast
did a piece on...you guessed it GREENIES! A whole story about how dogs are
DYING from blockages after eating those stupid things! Here is a link to the
article....tur ns out they are NOT 100% digestible.... DUH!

SO PLEASE pass this info on....permissi on to cross post!!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Animals STILL Need Rescue!
« on: November 08, 2005, 11:23:02 pm »
Hi,

I was asked to cross post this info... it is a heart breaker, especially if you check out the link at the bottom. Please cross post and help if you can.  :'(

Thanks,
Deena

Read below:

As some of you know, I've been working as a "StealthVolunte er" trying to reunite Katrina animals with their families, who are now spread throughout the country.  I've been doing this because I would be beside myself if I somehow got separated from my dogs in a disaster such as Katrina.  People were forced to leave their animals behind.  One man was told, "You either leave that dog and come with us, or I'm killing the dog here and now!"

The news media have left New Orleans behind, and now it's on to the next big story.  HSUS and ASPCA pulled out of New Orleans on October 15.  Since then, the rescue of dogs, cats, horses, birds, and anything else in the animal kingdom has been carried on by Jane Garrison, one of the HSUS's most skilled and committed rescuers, by herself without HSUS credentials, and by a number of small, but dedicated groups such as Noah's Wish.

There is still desperate need, in fact increasingly desperate need, for volunteers to help with this effort.

Below is a message that was put on the StealthVolunte ers list about the current situation.  If there is any way you can help -- by going to NO, by sending money, be being a StealthVolunte er -- please do whatever you can.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"There are still many, many animals still needing food/water and
rescue in the New Orleans area.  If you know anyone, please
encourage them to go to help out.  Getting donations to help fund
trips for this cause is very doable. Please see Eric's
(www.ericsdogbl og.com) suggestions below about how to get creative
on enlisting help.  Thank you.

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION  ;D

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this
true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't
waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up
your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can
extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer?
Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies.. What does a cow eat? Hay and
corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an
efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?
Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy
vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily
allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine,
that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even
more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms>up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.
If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular
exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.
In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be
bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You
should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO ...... Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's
the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had
about ! food and diets.

And remember: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body,>but
rather to skid in
sideways - Chardonnay in one hand, chocolate in the other - body thoroughly
used up,
totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!"

Enjoy the ride BPOers! ;D ;D ;D

Yes, we forgot!   :-[  So here mother and I are, up at the usual time, only to realize (in my case) that I was up at a quarter to four instead of a quarter to five.  It is already almost five here, so I guess we will be staying up.

Hopefully no one else forgot too!

I've been wondering what is going on around here lately with the fan clubs.   ???  What are they?  I've seen a "Suspicious Chicken" one and a "Gramps Highland" one.  Are these inside jokes?

I just thought I would ask.

Kuvasz Discussions / Sapphire had a small break through last week.
« on: October 27, 2005, 09:18:48 am »
Was having too much fun yesterday and forgot to share some important news.

Just wanted to share with you, as some of you may remember, despite having numerous people come to our home, Sapphire was refusing to respect us and allow us to have control of who came into the house. Last week my sister came, no problem. She barked once and...nothing. She later in the evening treated my sister as if she'd lived with us forever. So my LGD friends, could this be the beginning of a breakthrough, or did she just smell my sisters Aussie on her? My sister stayed for 3 days and she was great the whole day.

Another small break through today.... our housekeeper occasionally is told by Sapphire not to mop or vacuum. She would stand in front of the door to the laundry room and not let her come out occassionally when she went to get the mop or vacuum. Well today, after Eugenia picked up the vacuum, Sapphire took her position and barked once. I looked over said, "No Sapphire." Sapphire looked at me. I said, "Come Sapphire." She came and let Eugenia vacuum. I praised her and went on about my day. Sapphire laid at my feet. So how are we doing?

Any advise on how to proceed? More of the same?

I'll check back tomorrow...

Anything Non-Dog Related / Dear Desperate..
« on: October 23, 2005, 09:53:04 am »
Just for fun... my husband sent me this today.  :D Enjoy! I'll catch up with BPO tomorrow!

Deena

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a
distinct slow down in overall system performance - particularly in the
flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under
Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such
as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed
undesirable programs such as Super 12 Version 5.0, Tri-Nations 3.0,
Limited Overs 7.2 and especially Golf Clubs 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes
the system.

I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?
Signed,
Desperate

Dear Desperate,

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while
Husband 1.0 is an Operating System.

Please enter the command: "http: I Thought You Loved Me.htm" and try to
download Tears 6.2 and don't forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.

If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then
automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But
remember, over use of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to
default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1.

Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly
Beta. Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus
in the background, that will eventually seize control of all your system
resources.

Also, do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are
unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited
memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider
buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We
recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck,
Tech Support

Anything Non-Dog Related / Not completely off topic: Our Day
« on: October 22, 2005, 08:17:13 pm »
Yesterday was quite a day.  We had to clean up the house and yard in the morning, because someone was coming to have the house shown to them.  Mother, Nicholas, and I worked on that in the morning, but mother had to leave around 9:30 to have her hair done.  Grandmother also helped by blowing the driveway and garage clear of grass clippings and the like.  My grandmother and aunt, who had come down to clear out grandmother's storage unit, left between 10:00 and 10:30 yesterday morning.  (BTW, Sapphire was really happy to see grandmother again and took to Aunt Tara quickly.)  We managed to clean everything up fairly well before leaving at noon with both dogs, shortly after mother had returned.

First, we went to Petsmart and bought several things: a 44 lb. bag of dog food, a prong collar for Sapphire, two ropes, and a huge tug toy, with a loop at one end for the dog and a triangular loop with a handle at the other end.  That things is neat; it is over three feet long, I'm pretty sure, and, with that handle, the dog can't possibly win.  However, at the store, Sapphire and Gucci didn't behave very well.  Gucci was managable because she is so small, but Sapphire wanted to run after everyone (in our family), mill around with Gucci, and run over to the dog training area where a (noisy) class was going on.  Stay was nearly impossible when I attempted to fit a prong collar.  Mother was happy with Sapphire because she wasn't aggressive or fearful, but I was definitely not; Sapphire's excitement and disobedience was frustrating.  (This is an example of why we needed the prong collar; she is just too big to hold when she is excited, and in such cases she doesn't always have good manners.)

Then, we stopped to get some take-out for lunch.  I think it was 1:15 or so when we arrived home.  A neighbor who had just obtained her real estate license and had made the request also walked through the house.

There was little else noteworthy yesterday, until evening.  Catherine (the baby in the picture and my youngest sister) was walking around with some food, which she stuck out in front of Sapphire's nose.  Then, Catherine lifted her hand a little; and Sapphire sat.  Next, the baby touched her hand, with the food still in it, to the ground; so Sapphire laid down and looked at her.  Finally, Catherine dropped the food for Sapphire to gobble.  Ta da!!!  ;D  It was really funny, because Catherine is 1 year old (her birthday was on October 14th), and we had never taught her to do that.

It was quite a day, but I did get some school done too.  ;)

Sofia

Edited: to clarify a point.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Yippie Skippie! I got my ranch!
« on: October 16, 2005, 03:06:57 am »
Just wanted to share a few pics of the ranch my husband bought me! We are moving the week after Thanksgiving to SE Alabama/SW Georgia. I've got 135+ acres (80 acres of rolling hills pasture with trees, and 55 acres of mixed hardwood forest.) We'd move in early Nov, but must resolve the fence issues first. Electric and barbed wire do not mix with small children.

So, I won't be on BPO as often until probably after the Christmas/New years holidays, but will be thinking of everyone often. I'll try to be on every Monday evening, but if any one needs to get in touch with me, jusy pm...I check my email twice a day.

And of course you all know what this means.......MO RE DOGS! More Kuvasz and Great Pyrenees to come! Lot's more pics!  ;D ;D ;D
