Big Dogs with Jobs / Questions about carting/sledding
« on: August 05, 2006, 05:09:08 pm »
I am interested in teaching my 2 dogs to pull a cart or sled (probably a cart more often considering our biggest snowfall is like 3-4 inches and melts the day that it snows!  ::) ) Anyway, I wondered if any of you have taught your dogs carting or sledding and any tips you may have. Websites that have great info, good places to get harnesses, ganglines, tuglines, hitches, etc. Or are any of you interested in teaching your dog how to cart but haven't done anything yet like me?  :)

Also, do you guys think that it is hard on the dog's hips or back to pull things like that? I'm a little bit worried about increasing the risk of hip dysplasia with heavy pulling, but I e-mailed a lady who is an expert on carting and she seemed to assure me that if done the right way, it shouldn't be a problem. How old do you think my dogs should be before I teach them to pull? I don't want to hurt growing bones or muscles. Zoey is 17 months and Dolly is 15 months. Tell me what you all think!

Breeding Questions & Information / Backyard Breeders
« on: August 02, 2006, 04:16:31 pm »
I have some questions about backyard breeders. I'd heard the term only occasionally before I came to BPO, but not as much as I do now. So I want to know, what exactly is a back yard breeder and who determines when someone is or not? What exactly do they do that is so bad? I'm not trying to stick up for them or anything. I'm sincerely asking. I know what things I think good breeders should do. Such as worm their pups and give them shots until they go to new homes. Make sure they are healthy by taking them to the vet for a checkup. Make sure they go to good homes and keep in contact with them after selling the pup to them. And take care of the puppies and parents of the pups. And if they can't find homes for the pups or can't care for them, then of course they shouldn't breed their dogs. If a breeder doesn't do that, then yes, I agree that they're not a good breeder. But other than that, what defines a "backyard breeder" exactly?

Hey, I can pull either one of these, especially the Pyr if anyone is interested. The Pyr desperately needs a good home! He's a big sweet-looking boy. His adoption fee is $50. I can help with transport for him for sure. The Saint mix, her adoption fee is $45 plus $50 for spay/neuter deposit. I can help with her too. Both look like awesome dogs! First link is the Pyr, second is the Saint.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Need some advice.
« on: July 24, 2006, 10:23:19 pm »
Not too long ago, a very good topic was brought up about who would your animals go to if something should happen to you. Well, I've got that question halfway answered. My cats could go to a friend of mine, no problem. However, my big dogs are a bigger problem. I am fairly certain that Dolly's breeder would take her back, but not Zoey. They didn't sound too impressed that we had a Malamute when we got Dolly. None of our friends or family want 2 big dogs. And I don't have the contact info for Zoey's breeder. And while it's unlikely that something would happen to me and my parents, I want the dogs to have a plan of where to go just in case. So what should my next step be in finding a good place for them to go? Should I talk to a rescue or a humane society? That would be a good way that they only went to good homes. And I don't want them separated. I don't think that's best for them. So I need some input. Where should I go from here?

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / These Pyr puppies will be euthanized!
« on: July 13, 2006, 11:49:57 am »
Unless they find a home very soon, these puppies and their mom will be put to sleep because they are not in a no-kill shelter. The shelter thinks they are about 6-7 weeks old and Great Pyrenees mixed with something??? Adoption fee is $10!!!!! Please, guys, let's not let these beautiful dogs be put to sleep! I can certainly help with transport. Link is below.

Breeding Questions & Information / Question about feeding
« on: July 11, 2006, 07:44:32 pm »
Should I be elevating my girls' food dishes off the the ground? I know that you are supposed to do so for Great Danes and other tall breeds, but I just didn't know if it's bad or something for their backs to bend to eat like normal. Zoey stands when she eats and Dolly actually lays down to eat. Is that unhealthy?

These cuties need a home soon! There are 5 of them; 4 girls and 1 boy. They will probably be medium-large dogs; most likely not giant! They are in Oklahoma. You can go to wspca.org to download and fill out the adoption application if interested. I think the adoption fee is $75. I can help with transport up to 2 hours away probably. Anyone have a little room for one more fur baby?

« on: July 09, 2006, 01:45:56 pm »
Hey guys! Here's a cool website that can give you your dog's age in human years by having you answer some simple questions. Go to www.dogage.com and begin the dog age test. Zoey ended up being 10.2 years old and Dolly was 10.4 years old. Pretty cool!

« on: June 23, 2006, 03:52:13 pm »
See you guys in a week! My family and I are going to Branson, MO for a week to get away from it all! The girls are going on vacation too, only to a boarding kennel with lots of other dogs to play with! I'll miss you all! I hope nothing major goes on here while I'm gone, but if so, I guess I'll just have to play catch up. Bye!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / New idea! Good one?
« on: June 13, 2006, 11:18:16 pm »
Hey all you Big Paws moms and dads! I had an idea of maybe how to get some new members here, but I needed some advice, opinions, input, ideas, whatever first. What if we were to make a flyer or card that advertised bigpawsonly.co m and told about the site? Then, we members could hand them out anyone who owned a big paw and seemed interested in joining a site like this. I know I would have loved it if I had somehow heard about this site months ago! I can start working on a design for a flyer or business card. Anyone else willing to give it a try? I'm open to all sorts of suggestions! I just think this place is great and we should really try to get the site out there. Is this a good idea, bad, dumb, okay? Let me know what you think!

Okay, guys, I know I probably went against most of your advice. But today, Dolly is at the vet getting her fur shaved off!!!!  :-\ It will be 1/4 of an inch long now! I just am so scared at how she'll look! I don't know what to expect! I wouldn't have done it, except that she gets sooo hot outside and we have a pool for her and shade, but she still just gets too hot. Ohhhh, I'm so nervous! Am I being a bad mom? I've heard over and over that the fur doesn't grow back the same ever again. And the vet said they had no other option on how short to shave it. It could only be 1/4 an inch. I just wanted her to be okay for the summer. I'm so worried! Did I do a bad thing?

Well, these pictures pretty much show that Zoey is literally top dog in our house! So that made me wonder... for you who have multiple dogs, who rules the roost? Hope you like the pictures too!

Book Club & Noteworthy Reads / Does anyone get DogFancy?
« on: May 20, 2006, 04:42:21 pm »
I subscribe to DogFancy (love it!!!!) and this month, the featured breed was the Doberman Pinscher! Thought some of you would like to know that! I thought of all the Dobermen on here after I saw it. If you get the magazine, how true was the article to your dobbie personal experience? Usually, they're pretty accurate with their articles. What's your fave part of this magazine if you get it?

Pointer Discussions & Pictures / Educate me, please!
« on: May 06, 2006, 04:48:44 am »
I'm kind of attracted all of the sudden to German Shorthaired Pointers! Please educate me about this breed, all of you who have experience with it. I hope to own one someday, but I'd like to hear more about them from people who own them or deal with them frequently! What's their personality like? Energy level? Good qualities? Bad qualities? Spill it all!
