I will have to check on the price per gallon, as you know San Diego is notoriously high....  Costs me about $40 to fill my tank...

Yesterday I got gas and is was $2.57 for regular w/ ethonol. The cheapest stuff. Today is was ranging anywhere between $2.75-$2.89. They said on the news that it will probably go up to $3 by the weekend. I'm glad I got gas yesterday. I am going on vacation this weekend and driving. AAAHHH!!!

Depending what part of the state you are in. By my moms house it is 2.70 by work it is 2.86 by Pierres house it is around 2.60 they are all an hour away from each other. It takes about 30-40 to fill the Camero but I like to never let it get past 1/2 mark and its like 60-65 to fill His Expedition.

holy cow!  I had heard about it being about $7 a gallon in Europe.  It's sad.  I remember one year it was .80 cents a gallon.  That was great!

I'm on the west side of Michigan.  it's been holding steady at $2.74 till today...unless you go south about 25 miles and it was $2.59 or $2.69.  It's very sad.

101.9 per litre in Niagara Ontario. I have been going across to the US to fill up I save about $10-$20 each time. In Canada it takes $100 to fill my tank when close to empty :'(

Ok you all are gonna jump all over me but...... I have no idea. I don't pay attention to it. It's kinda like Tide laundry detergent. That's all I use so why worry about what it costs, I'm gonna buy it anyway.

Don't worry, I kinda feel the same way. I try not to stress about things I can't control, so I don't pay much attention to the price per gallon. I do flinch at the total price for a full tank (I think it is about $40 for one of our cars and $50 for the other), but luckily a full tank is lasting longer than ever for us since we both work in town now (thank god for short commutes).

And, by the way, LOL at the laundry detergent joke  :D

I hear ya, tina. DH fills up my tank on payday, and I have been riding my bike as long as the weather is good. It's less than $10.00 to fil it up if I'm on fumes to get to the pump. Of course the crazy Chicago drivers try to kill you...but it's a cheap ride.

i live in long beach CA and i paid 2.86 for regular this morning.

I know this probably won't be a very popular veiw but i am glad prices are going up.  The US has always had remarkably low gas prices relative to other comprable places.  I think this is part of the reason why people drive so many gas guzzling SUV's and Trucks here in the US, and why public transportation is so poor.  Mainly, i am a crazy environmentali st and i drive as little as possible and in the most fuel efficient way possible because it is important to me, not to save money. I don't think current US gas prices, even now, value a clean sustainable environment at what it is really worth, and untill gas prices are high enough to convince peopel to use public transportation (which increased gas taxes could pay for), buy fuel efficient cars, and carpool, i won't be complaining.

so what do you tell those of us with giant breed dogs?

No I drive a SUV to fit my family [ skin and fur] in so we can all go out together and if I lived by public transportation I would never leave my house. Where i live there  isnt any public transportation . Sometimes those things dont work for certain people. I think the gas price is way too high and just stupid.  ;D No arguement just different way of thinking

I drive a mini van which I need to fit my family & dogs...BUT my hubby & his good friend drive semi which gets the products we all need & use out onto store shelves...This is about killing the truck drivers!...I really feel bad for the owner/operators!!!...They will have to raise their prices & s**t rolls downhill...Gue ss who pays in the end?...You & I at the stores >:(...I am in a different opinion also.

like i said, i totaly understand most folks don't agree.  And shoudl have mentioned that this is my ideal, in my utopia where a lot of other things are differnet too..

I know that the US is not ready for this.  We don't have the infrastructure yet as far as public transportation is concerned.  In my fantacy land prices would be higher for gas in areas that offered alternatives (because the alternatives would be paid for by gas taxes).

My thoughts on all the reasons why SUV's Vans and Trucks are needed in the world is purely economic, and having my own giant i understand, but those people who need to consume more gas also need to pay the price, or move to other technologies like hybrid vehicels which now come in the SUV variety.  The higher gas prices the higher the demand for such vehicles will get, leading to more makes models and options.

will do!!  i posted that before i saw your comment, so it doesn't really apply to truck drivers.

i know high gas prices are a hard pill to swallow, particularly for truck drivers.  I am willing to pay higher prices for everything if it means a cleaner environment because i am a california tree hugging crazy lady.  i also have an economics degree, and beleive in markets ability to adjust themselves to prices.  Things would have to change in a ton of ways to get to a new equilibrium, but it would certainly happen eventually.

i really don't want people to feel like i am attacking anyone, because that is really not the case.  or that i don'tunderstand why people hate gas prices being so high, because i do, i pay for gas too.  But i like to bring alternative ideas out whereever i go, and i love hearing what people think.....

In relation to the hybrid SUV's, the only one that is a marked increase in MPG is the Ford escape which is too small for me, my Honey and my 3 beasts.  Most other SUV hybrids, such as the Highlander, and the new Mitsubishi are only 2-3 gallons difference, but a HIGE increase in initial price.  A new Nissan truck hybrid actually fared WORSE on the emissions than it's fuel counterpart.  I have to have an SUV, as where I'm living is on dirt roads, and in the middle of nowhere.  When searching for a new verhicle I looked at the hybrids, and they just aren't practical.  Maybe in the future......  One of the reasons I was looking is for the $2,000 tax break that hybrids were supposed to afford, and after this year no one will be eligible.  Even now only 3 cars are!  The Escape being the only SUV.

Another reason why what's feasible in other countries can't be instituted here is, in Europe for example, everything is close to everything else.  People walk or bike to town, and everything is right there.  I know for me I have to drive 10 minutes to the grocery store, 45 minutes to the dog park, 20 minutes to a hospital, it's horrible.  And that's from my city house!  I go through a ton of miles.  Since I bought my car in May I've put over 10,000 miles on it.  That's just local driving.

I understand your post, and while I too want to save the environment, and help with implementing feasible alternatives.  But our country is huge and widespread and I just don't see it happening.

the wide spread thing is a big issue in the US, and i think alternatives like hybrids are really the solution, but i agree that there are not many large hybrid options out there.... hopefully with time that will change...

unfortunately economics takes time to settle into changes.  I am pretty sure that in my lifetime the oil supply will be one of the biggest issues.  i think we are looking at about 50 years of oil supply left if we continue to increase consumption at the rates we currently are.  I would bet money that inthe next 10 years we will start to get ood large hybrid options.

California has a great new incentive for hogh gas mileage, the carpool lane.  only 3 cars get high enough, all hybrids and none the suv variety, but i bet the increased demand for hybrids here and the complaints to dealers about how they would get the hybrid suv but they cant drive it in the carpool lane so why bother will help pressure new suv hybrids out of them......

Different solutions are needed in different areas, i just hope that these gas prices will start to make changes that make alternatives reasonable for everyone.

I just wanted to add that I think it really is great that you are looking at the big picture!...I totally understand & agree with where you are coming from!...It's just the here & now effects whether we pay our mortgage every month or not...That makes it hard for me not to get upset about fuel prices in regards to our situation...Be tween a rock & a hard place comes to mind. :-\

boy do i feel that.  between shakespear goign missing, then the broken leg then the infection, daily vet visits, several overnight stays and surgery on his foot we are hurting these days.    like a few people said before though, i tend not to dwell on prices because i have to drive, so i have to pay, i just kind of do it.  my rent gets paid... but the credit cards don't always.   i am way too much of a big picture person for even my own good, but i enjoy life, and that is what matters.

That is all craziness... i forgot to look this morning, but i know california is supposed to be affected by the huricane damage more slowely because we can't get our gas from those refineries (we have all kinds of special laws and regulations about what can and can not be in our gas, so we have special refineries we have to get it from, none of which are in the gulf).

There was a bit about gas prices on NPR this morning.  http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4825703
i am not sure if this contains the part i heard that was most interesting because i can't listen to it at work (stupid firewall).

One person spoke about what can be done in relation to gas prices.  His conclusions was that there wasn't really a short term solution that wouldn't hurt us a lot more in the long run (ie using the reserves even after refineries open again in the gulf, eliminating federal gas tax, or settign a pirce cap).  His suggestion was to take the gas companies anytime they get a financial windfall (which is obviously at the cost fo consumers), and to use this moeny to increase earned wage tax credits to help those hardest hit.  Certainly worth some thought.

How so???  Are they not fuel economical either???
not really... many 'truck hybrids' are only getting 26-28mpg. which is GREAT for a 'truck' (ford escape, lexus rx400h, toyota highlander, etc.). but compared to other nation's diesels regularly getting 40mpg, we, as a nation, must REALLY eliminate our unfounded obsession with trucks/SUVs. GM/Ford's truck sales jumped back up to almost pre-gas crisis levels with this 'employee discount' shenanigans. that's right, truck sales was SLUMPIN like a mofo... but the FIRST chance Americans get at a discount, they go right back to their asinine ways...  ???

atm, the only true high mileage (over 45mpg in the city) hybrid cars are the toyota prius and the honda insight/civic ... of course, you can buy a new miata and get 30mpg.. but i digress  ;D
: Re: Your Gas Prices
: Kirsten August 31, 2005, 01:08:03 PM
while hybrids might not be THE answer, i think they are part of the solution.  The 3 that do get great gas millage are a really great option for those of us that don't need big cars (as is the mini cooper 36 mpg, but i digress).  I also think that the technology will come around for the bigger guys eventually.... ..

In Edmonton it just went up to 103, but all the gas stations give out gas discounts at the pump, usually 3.5 cents a L. But it is suppose to go up again. What is more retarded is that Alberta HAS OIL! We pump it out of the ground!! I just don't get it

Not "if" the hybrid batteries die, "WHEN" they die, and they have not been out long enough for anyone to really know how long they will last.

you can get close to hybrid performance with some small cars such as the honda civic 5sp manual, the new diesel volkswagons, etc..

I'm all for the hybrid technology when they are more feasible to purchase, I hope it comes soon.

it'll take over $100 to fill my husband's truck now.  We may car pool to work.  For now I do ride my Harley everywhere.  I freaked when it took over $6.00 yesterday to put in 2.08 gallons.  My husband's bike takes premium only so it'll be about $15 or more to fill it up.  only consolation is we get great milage.

not really... many 'truck hybrids' are only getting 26-28mpg. which is GREAT for a 'truck' (ford escape, lexus rx400h, toyota highlander, etc.). but compared to other nation's diesels regularly getting 40mpg, we, as a nation, must REALLY eliminate our unfounded obsession with trucks/SUVs.

Tony,

I don't mean to pick on you I really don't, but you keep setting me off! ;)  I have 3 dogs, meaning I need alot of cargo room.  So why not go with a van?  Or a station wagon?  Because I need sturdy 4 Wheel drive.  I don't want it I need.  Right now I'm living with my grandparents as their health is foundering, and they live in the midle of nowhere.  Cross some dirt roads that are never worked on, go up 70 degree hills, and I live in New Hamsphire where we have lovely lovely snow, and often, when it's too cold to snow, we get freezing ice.  I don't drive like alot of 4x4ers do, such as "I have 4 wheel drive, I'm indestructible and can go 75 miles an hour during white out conditions!"  But up here at least trucks and SUVs are a necessity, not an "Unfounded obsession".  For every car, there are 3 trucks/SUVs in my area.  Yes I have a problem with over indulgence on occasion, like people buying the new Hummers which, in my opinion, are totally impractial, but some people need the utility, and they pay for it just as much as anyone else does.

OMG!!!!!!! Our gas prices went nuts today. We were paying 1.10 a litre and now we are paying $1.30 a litre. That turns into $4.10 after the exchange rate into American dollars per gallon!!!!!! I waited in line for half an hour just to top up a quarter of a tank because they are saying that by the end of tomorrow we may spike even higher!!!!! I guess it is time to look into getting Hutch a cart and teach him to pull!!

Ang I here ya we get, as you all know a lot on snow in Canada too and in the winter you need a truck or Suv with 4 wheel drive or you aren't getting anywhere. And here in Edmoton they don't salt the roads as it gets to cold and the salt doesn't do anything, they sand the roads and barley ever plow, so you are driving on lots of snow.

Tony,
I don't mean to pick on you I really don't, but you keep setting me off! ;)  I have 3 dogs, meaning I need alot of cargo room.
Ang,
i also don't MEAN to set u off but.. understand there are countries (besides our own) which suffer the same condition as your beloved NE... and they don't abuse the availability of trucks like us. you have 3 dogs, i have 2. you live in the snow, ditto. granted i'm not offroadin', but in the jungles of Chicago downtown, i might as well be.

a sturdy wagon w/ 4 wheel drive you ask? Audi has been making these for ever and a day, since the 80s i believe. ditto to benz (4matic series) and now bmw. teutonic cars too outrageously priced? try any subaru wagon -  been AWD, and more reliable than most american trucks, since the 80s -  or the RAV4/CR-V (both car based mini-utes w/ FRUGAL 4bangers) don't like japanese? try the new dodge magnum wagon 4wd or ford escape. the MISCONCEPTION is that snow dwellers (beside yourself) NEED 3 ton 4WD trucks to survive. I drove around MI / IL in a slammed Miata for 2 years. Never got stuck. it's a 50/50 balanced rwd car with snow tires mounted.

again, similar to the doggy food thread, there ARE better solutions that ppl are simply unwilling to accept; PROVE to me a 15mpg 4wd truck is more capable in the snow than a 27mpg RAV4/CRV... actually don't bother. it's not. trucks are heavier, stop slower, accelerate slower,  turn slower due to bigger tires/height. AND of course, burn more gas. drive on ice? no amount of awd, 4x4, 10 wheel drive can save you on ice. "almost" every car, beyond the tire factor, is equally doomed. did you know a Mazda6 wagon (which I sold for awhile) has more cargo room than a Ford explorer??? and Europeans ride motorcycles (50mpg+) in the SNOW??? this is what i mean by 'asinine' Americans.

Tony
* car geek
** also a hypocrite as I'm picking up an S2000 on Sunday... but o wait! that still gets 30mpg on the freeway w/ the top down...  ;D

Audi and Mercedes and Volkswagen all have All Wheel drive vehicles in wagon form.  However I'm not independantly weathly, and I can't afford those.  Even Subies up here are overpriced.  We go through cars like water here because the salt destroys everything.  They all rot away.  A car you can get for under a grand in the south or Midwest is gonna be at least $2,500.  I was looking at the Ford Freestyle, but I can't afford that either.  Especially now that I am unemployed, I'm glad I didn't go for the $500+ payments:)  I looked at the Magnum and it made me claustrobic.  Like I said earlier the Escape isn't condusive (Aren't big words great? :) ) to a growing Dane, a spaztic setter and a 80 pound+ sled dog.  On the test drive we went to my house and picked up the boys (Dane and Chinook) and they had to lay on top of each other and even then Sanity was pushing into my back.  Plus there are times where I go out on doggy events with friends.  Mainly of the Dane variety.  I posted pics.

My car gets about 20mpg, and I'm actually pretty happy with that.  There were many other considerations for Cargo, such as my Honey is a drummer, and try fitting a 5 peice set, plus cymbals into a Jeep wrangler (Talk about a gas hog :|)  Also, and this is totally vain on my part, but I'm a little person.  I've always been attracted to things that make me feel safe, so I get a big dog, a big car, a big man, ect.  We have to deal with Boston drivers, my man is from Chicago so I know that you're not much better off, and they all drive ENORMOUS cars that they don't need and because they're in these cars, that have huge blind spots in the first place, they don't even look before thy cut you off.  I saw someone in an Excursion crack into a Jetta, and rip the back half of the car off, sending it into a tailspin and not even notice.  Being able to be seen is a big load off of my mind.

I have no problems with little cars.  I drove a 88 5 speed Volkwagen Golf pretty much from 17 on, till I got the dogs, and I NEVER got stuck in that thing.  It always started, got great gas mileage, but I ran out of gas one day, called AAA and the tow truck company loaded my car with Diesel.  Destroyed the fuel pumps, and it wasn't worth the money to fix.  I cried for like a week I loved that car so much.

Ang

PS I'm a car geek too  :P  But more into the gas guzzling old school muscle cars.  I know it's horrid for the environment, but I miss when cars were made out of metal.  *Sigh*

I'm gonna go weld some metal plates to my car now ,and maybe some pointy spikes on the front.. People are getting so crazy, it will be like Mad Max and the Thunderdome here shortly.   People will be hijacking the gas truck before it gets there..

I expect a midget in a viking cap to be on the roof of my car banging on the windshield with a piece of drive shaft on my way to work in the morning :)

Gas in town is $2.99 for regular unleaded. This is crazy. We have a friend that hauls gas and he has been hauling 18 hours a day trying to keep stations from going empty. God only knows how much our propane will be for heat this winter.

Found this chart.  If you click on USA and then at the top "1 Year" you can see the progression in the average price.  I don't think that today's prices have been registered yet though.

Hey Nina, yup, I live in Halifax. Brace yourself for the gas prices.....rum or around town today is that it will be going up to 1.40 a litre!!!!! I hope that it is only a rumor, as of now it is 1.29 a litre, it jumped 20 cents yesterday and I'm terrified to drive anywhere. BUT- I was watching the news this morning and it mentioned domewhere in the States gas is now selling for $6.00 a gallon!!!!!!!!!!!!Is this true?

I heard that this morning that in Florida it's $6.00 a gallon.  It's $4.00 up in north Michigan.  Southern Michigan it's $3.19 - $3.50.
I also heard that prices will go down in about 2 weeks when the refineries start producing again.  President Bush is opening up oil reserves to provide refineries with oil for production.
I'm holding my breath. :)

I heard that too, but I think that those prices will be investegated, as it is wayyy to high, and they shouldn't be charging that much. The price is going up here too, some places it is 1.15 and others 1.20, a friend of mine filled up yesterday and she got it at 0.21 cents a L!!! The store was having a sale before the price went up

Good Grief, ours are 3.03 for the cheap, 3.19 for mid grade, and a whopping 3.39 for high grade.  We also heat with fuel oil, and with winter coming I am a blinkin mess.  We have a combo stove, can use wood too, BUT have not burned wood for hmmmm 12 years!  Hubby's idea is to either closeoff our upstairs, where all the BEDROOMS are! 1200 square feet of space!  OR chop and burn wood and I am freakin out about a fire...So much for my nice raise that was going twoards our new house in 2 years.... :-\  New baby coming home Tuesday so that makes 3 BIG dogs, well she is 8 weeks old but will grow fast so we will have lots of body heat right????? ::)

The cheapest I found it yesterday was $2.99 per gallon for regular.  I just can't believe it cost me $45 to fill up my tank.  I feel like I was just complaining a couple of weeks ago that I couldn't believe gas cost over $2 a gallon.

I can't believe that this is happening, there is no reason for the price to be raising like this. There is no gas shortages, even with what happened to New Orleans  :'( They are just taking all our money! Maybe it is so the economy won't colapse?? I just don't understand.  ???

It is out of control here. We have hit the $1.40 a litre mark now, which translates into $4.26 a gallon with the exchange rate into American bucks. A friend of mine moved into a new house yesterday and it cost her almost a thousand dollars to fill her oil tank for her new house!!!!!

This is just retarded!, in Alberta we have a surplus of billions of dollars and the gov, is saying they will not give us a rebate for gas, what is going to happen in the winter? Not everyone can afford this. I hope that the Nova Scotia gov gives you a rebate, My parents have oil heat too but they also have a fire place.
