: Acidophilus Lactobacillus ???
: DixieSugarBear September 08, 2005, 08:00:21 PM
My vet has suggested that I give Sugar Bear Acidophilus Lactobacillus for his tummy. He has had soft to runny stool on and off for the past few months.   We just finished a round of Albon.  Everything show up clean on the fecal and blood test.  I have done a google on it and I found that some of the better foods have it in it.  Does anyone give it to your fur-babies and if you do did it work?

This is from the one I plan to order:
"Acidophilus Formula is an Acidophilus Lactobacillus Blend with Acidophilus and fructooligosac charides, which supports immune function. Acidophilus also fights lactose-intolerance symptoms, flare-ups of inflammatory bowel disease and vaginal yeast infections, and supports natural digestion."

never have given it..I do give yogurt with active cultures which is probably about the same.

canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) can help with loose stools

I can not get Sugar Bear to eat more than one lick of Pumpkin.  The vet said she wants us to give this a try for a few weeks before we run any more test.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a "probiotic" used in some dietary supplements.  It is a kind of good bacteria that helps to break down food and works with the body to digest foods.  Yogurt with active cultures often contains this bacteria.  It might help Sugar Bear, and it is certainly a healthy supplement.

I hope it helps!

LIsa - my vet had suggested adding some probiotics to my mojos food if they were having problems switching from kibble to raw feeding...but I did not have to add any - they did just fine.

Have you tried using enzymes (or pro-biotics)?  I give them to both Cowboy and Chester and it seems to keep them "regular".   Chester has a problem with loose stools, I think, from eating so much wood.  Since I've started giving him  enzymes, he's completely fine.....

Which brand of enzymes (or pro-biotics) do you give Chester and Cowboy?

I've never given acidophilus to my dogs but I have taken it myself on and off for years! It's really good for you if you have ever been on antibiotics because it replenishes the "friendly bacteria" in your digestive system that gets wiped out by anitbiotics. It was recommended to me a long time ago by a nutritionist.  :)

Hey! I was getting ready say the exact same thing!

I think I will go back to adding yogurt and garlic to their food.
