Interestingly enough I think my sister has run the gamut in terms of types of seizures she has had. The absence seizure sounds like something that she had the last time she had an episode, we had never seen anything like it before. Her doctor is very good, but seems more interested in approaching her problem with surgery, I know it can be very helpful to some, but he's not even that confident that it will help her.
Do you by any chance know of a good website or discussion group about epilepsy that you could recommend. I'm also interested in the cluster seizures which is probably what she had last fall...where she would have a number of petit mals in the space of a day or two. Always at the same time of the month, which is something that we found interesting but her doctor doesn't care about.

What are absence seizures like? When my sister was first diagnosed (20 years ago) we thought there were only Grand and Petite Mal...which is all she seemed to have. In the past year it has been changing and we were told she was having partial seizures.
She was on Tegretol when she was younger and I do believe it worked for her at that age...not sure what she is on now.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dog Friendly Restaurants!

Okay, so Yesterday my sister, Summer and I went to Alexandria for lunch (next to Washington DC). There is a restaurant there that not only allows dogs on their dining terrace but has a dog menu as well. So the entree's are Hamburge, Chicken Stew and Lamb Stew (It think there was something else but I forget). So I order Summer the Lamb Stew, and when they bring out our orders hers comes as well and Man did it look good! Veggie's gravy and nice chuncks of Lamb! They serve it in these disposable containers along with one for water. Summer LOVED it! There were quite a few other dogs there as well. We ran into Summer's friend Arco who had the hamburger, which didn't look as good as the Stew (poor Arco).
Does anyone else know of dog friendly restaurants.

Children diagnosed with epilepsy frequently outgrow it. There is also a diet that has helped children overcome it. My sister has seizures, not triggered by epilepsy but because of a high fever as a child, so I understand how scary it is. You can email me directly if you like.

Oh that's terrible! I hate when people who are suppossed to know better don't.
I had a problem with a vet not too long ago and looked into who to file a complaint with. Unfortunately there is no National Board that governs Vet's, there are some State one's but they can't do much and if a Vet has a complaint filed against them in one State they can move to another and set up shop. It's horrible!
The best defense we have against bad vets is to be really informed ourselves and ask lots of questions. As my horse vet said "if a Vet get's upset because you are asking questions that's a sign of insecurity" I don't want that in a vet.
If I remeber correctly my Summer was 20 pounds by 11 weeks and she's not even a Giant Breed dog, so that Vet was plain Stupid!

Summer likes to eat grain at the barn. She loves it...I'm not sure if that is because she see's the horse eating it and anything her big brother gets she wants too!

My dobbie, Jax, who is no longer with me, was once lying in the dark on the slate (as in very very hard) floor of my parents house. I was running to get the phone and went flying when I hit him. I landed on my elbow and should of had stitches!
A friend (big guy, 6'4") got taken out at the dog park. Blind sided by running dogs. He had to go the emergency room, because something happened to his knee. He said it was very embaressing when he had to explain at the emergency room what happened
That just goes to show you to pay attention at the dog park!
Summer tried to kill me last week. On our morning walk (ie, I'm half asleep) she's walking like a good girl when all of a sudden she see's a squirrel and charges across the street. It's pretty quite because it's 6:00 am so I would have dropped the leash if I could, but I had wrapped it around my wrist. So she's dragging me across the street and I'm barely able to keep my feet under me and she pulls me into a stop sign and I got a bad scrape the length of my forearm. Good thing there wasn't anyone around to hear me swearing!!!

Personally, I have had both male and female dogs and don't have a preference. Currently I have a female Ridgeback, I think my next will be a male. I wanted a female this time because my last dog was a male and I wanted a change.
With Ridgeback's in particular there seems to be a big difference between the males and females. Of the top ten courser's in the country there is only one male, which says a lot!
When they were used to hunt, the females were always considered better because they are a matriarcal breed. The males were considered better guard dogs because they were big and lazy. At least that's what people say. Summer can be pretty intense!

Summer had Kennel Cough last week. She probably got it at the dog park. She was on Doxocylin (sp?) for a week, which helped. They say you don't need to put them on antibiotiics, that they get over it on their own, but you also have to be careful it doesn't progress into something worse. Also you need to be careful that it's not somthing like the flu that is going around now that is frequently misdiagnosed as kennel cough.
As per the vaccination, there are so many strains of bordatella around that the vaccination does very little to prevent it. My dog was vaccinated for it and she got it. Many people no longer think it is worthwhile to vaccinate for it. (but then I am in the anti-vaccination camp)
Hope she feels better soon.

Bummer about not eating Pumpkin as it's one of the best things in the world for upset tummies.
I'm so lucky with Summer, she eats everything (luckily not dog poop!) and never gets an upset tummy. Actually her tummy is pretty much cast iron.
Papaya extracts are good for horses with ulcers...I wonder if it's good for doggies too???
